How many high schools are in Canada? Need counts by enrollment size.

There are approximately 3,419 high schools in Canada. Of these schools, 821 have an enrollment of fewer than 100 students, 1,267 have an enrollment of between 100 and 500 students, 769 schools have an enrollment of between 501 and 1,000 students, and 562 schools have an enrollment of between 1,001 and 5,000 students. There are no Canadian high schools with more than 5,000 students. I have compiled the data on the attached spreadsheet so that you can see the breakdown by province and enrollment bracket.

Methodology

All provinces except Quebec had reports that detailed enrollment by school. In most cases, the reports were in Excel format, which allowed me to sort by total enrollment, and then only select the schools that had grades 9-12. I then sorted the schools into enrollment brackets of fewer than 100 students, between 100 and 500 students, between 501 and 1,000 students, and between 1,001 and 5,000 students. Finding the data for all provinces except Quebec was simply a matter of identifying the high schools and sorting them according to enrollment.

Please note that I included K-12 and 6-12 schools because they have high school grades among their populations. Since some provinces did not break down enrollment by grade, I used total school enrollment for all schools, so any establishment other than those with just 9-12 grades include the elementary and middle school enrollment numbers. However, in most cases the high school enrollment fell into the same enrollment bracket as the entire school.

QUEBEC
Quebec's enrollment numbers had to be triangulated, as it does not appear that the province publishes a school-by-school enrollment report. Therefore, I used the average enrollment percentages in each bracket for British Columbia and Ontario to calculate the percentage of schools in each bracket for Quebec. Here is the calculations:

The population of Quebec is 8.1 million.
The population of British Columbia is 4.6 million
The population of Ontario is 13.6 million
The average population of British Columbia and Ontario is 9.1 million (4.6 million + 13.6 million = 18.2 million. 18.2 million / 2 = 9.1 million)
Even though this is a million more people than Quebec, it was the closest I could get to a similar population for estimation purposes. I assumed that Quebec would have a similar enrollment breakdown as the average of British Columbia and Ontario based on population.

For each enrollment bracket, I found the average percentage of the total enrollment for British Columbia and Ontario:

Under 100
British Columbia: 34% (214/623=0.34)
Ontario: 11% (101/911 = 0.11)
Average percent of total for the Under 100 bracket is 23% (34% + 11% = 45%, 45% / 2 = 22.5% or rounded up to 23%)
Quebec: 464 x 0.23 = 107 (entered 107 into cell C11)

Between 100 and 500
British Columbia: 34% (211/623 = 0.34)
Ontario: 27% (244/911 = 0.27)
Average percent of total for the Between 100 and 500 bracket is 31% (34% + 27% = 61%, 61%/2 = 30.5%)
Quebec: 464 x 0.305 = 142 (entered 142 into cell D11)

Between 500 and 1,000
British Columbia: 15% (96/623 = 0.15)
Ontario: 34% (312/911 = 0.34)
Average percent of total for Between 500 and 1,000 bracket is 25% (15% + 34% = 49%, 49%/2 = 24.5%)
Quebec: 464 x 0.245 = 113 (entered 113 into cell E11)

Between 1,001 and 5,000
British Columbia: 16% (102/623 = 0.16)
Ontario: 28% (254/911 = 0.28)
Average percent of total for Between 1,001 and 5,000 bracket is 22% (16% + 28% = 22%)
Quebec: 464 x 0.22 = 101 (entered 102 into cell F11)

Conclusion

There are approximately 3,419 high schools in Canada, which have been broken down by province and by enrollment bracket on the attached spreadsheet.
