Healthcare Companies: Southern California, Part 1

While your research team did not find 7-10 companies that met all the specified criteria due to the revenue limitation, your research team found two companies located in Southern California with 50 or more employees and 2018 revenue of $20 million or more. While these companies do not provide direct therapy to patients, they do fall within the broad categories of genetics and oncology. Illumina manufactures genome sequencing equipment for the biotech industry. Human Longevity provides genome sequencing and genetic disease prevention services to consumers. The attached spreadsheet has been filled out. Read below for our full findings.

Findings

Illumina, a manufacturer & supplier of genetics equipment is based in San Diego, CA. Their products are used in the field of oncology. They have 7,300 employees and had 2018 revenue of $3.3 billion. They offer a wide range of genetics equipment and genome sequencing to biotech therapeutics companies.

Human Longevity, based in San Diego, CA, provides genome sequencing and health intelligence services aimed at genetic disease prevention & awareness to patients. They have 184 employees and estimated 2018 revenue of $35 million.

Methodology

As your research team was advised not to include companies located in Northern California or companies in Southern California with revenue of less than $20 million, we did not expand our search beyond these criteria.

Your research team performed a direct search of credible databases such as Craft, Dun & Bradstreet Hoovers, and Crunchbase, because these databases provide information on the number of employees as well as revenue information for each company. We sought companies in the broad categories of rare disease, genetics, or gene therapy within the therapeutic areas of CNS, oncology, gastro, ophthalmology, cardio, or respiratory, having 50 or more employees, 2018 revenue of at least $20 million, and located within Southern California. In every instance companies within the broad categories and therapeutic areas were located in Northern California, or were located in San Diego, but with revenue below $20M. As all the companies surveyed did not meet the research criteria, we are unable to include them in this report.

Since the companies we found were located in Northern California or had revenue of less than $20 million, we expanded our search to industry publications like Biospace, industry groups like Meeting on the Mesa, and research groups like Gene Therapy Net. Finding all the Californian companies listed to be located in Northern California or with revenue of less than $20M, this search was unfruitful as well.

Next, we targeted our search specifically to companies in the therapeutic fields of CNS, oncology, gastro, ophthalmology, cardio, and respiratory located in California but each company surveyed was either located in Northern California or had revenue of less than $20 million so we had to exclude those companies from this report. Your research team found that a great many of the companies in California within the broad categories & therapeutic areas specified are located primarily in the Palo Alto area or near waterways north of San Francisco. The remainder of companies in these fields in Southern California are located in or near San Diego, but all the companies found were in some stage of VC rounds with annual revenue around $2-3 million, well below the $20 million revenue threshold, and thus were not included in this report.

Healthcare Companies: New York / New Jersey

As indicated in the spreadsheet, Aevitas Therapeutics, which falls under Fortress Biotech, is the only company in the healthcare space in New York or New Jersey that provides genetics, gene or rare disease therapy with a revenue of over $20 million and over 50 employees. Below is a methodology that we used in an attempt to find the other requested companies.

METHODOLOGY

Our first strategy was to check for publicly available lists of companies that provide healthcare services within the states of New Jersey or New York. In this case, we looked for information in leading publications in the healthcare sector and company profile databases. However, this strategy was unsuccessful since it provided a high number of results, including some companies that should not be listed. The second strategy was to narrow down the list based on the criteria provided, such as the location, its operations, number of employees and earnings in 2018. In this case, we utilized company databases such as Owler, Craft and Crunchbase. Based on this approach, we established that the only company that fits within the stipulated criteria was Aevitas Therapeutics that falls under Fortress Biotech. However, the information available was only on Fortress Biotech and there was no specific data on Aevitas Therapeutics especially in regard to revenue or number of employees. Based on this, we assumed that since it falls under Fortress Biotech, we used the number of employees and revenues of the parent company to represent Aevitas. The third strategy was to expand our search to include companies that fit most of the stipulated criteria regardless of their revenue. Some of the companies identified include MeiraGtx, Roivant Sciences and Retrophin. However, these firms had their headquarters in London, Basel and Sand Diego respectively. Others like Rocket Pharmaceuticals and Grey Genetics had fewer employees and could not be listed. In conclusion, we were able to identify a list of life sciences, pharmaceutical and biotech companies from New Jersey and New York including their specialties and locations. While most of the companies do not meet most of the stipulated criteria, the list features companies that offer genetic health services, rare disease and gene therapy.

Healthcare Companies: Boston / Massachusetts

The following Healthcare companies operating in Boston, Massachusetts have been added to the Boston, Massachusetts tab of the spreadsheet.
  • Agios Pharmaceuticals
  • Forma Therapeutics
  • Sage Therapeutics
  • Jounce Therapeutics
  • Vertex Pharmaceuticals

METHODOLOGY

To find healthcare companies in Boston, Massachusetts, we searched the public domain for a list of companies that meet the specified criteria. Having found the companies, we searched each company's website for their annual report which documents the total revenue for 2018 fiscal year. However, revenue data was not available on the press release and annual reports of the companies.
Next, we searched company profiling databases such as Crunchbase, D&B Hoovers, and Bloomberg for recent revenue estimates of the companies. From this search strategy, we were able to locate the revenue reports of all the companies which we entered into the spreadsheet accordingly.

Healthcare Companies: Southern California, Part 2

In rows 5-11, columns A-H in the Southern California tab of the attached spreadsheet, we have added information on seven additional companies in the healthcare space in the Southern California area, including Grifols Biologicals LLC, Puma Biotechnology, Sorrento Therapeutics, Atyr Pharma, BioLegend, Ambry Genetics, and Pathway Genomics.

METHODOLOGY

To identify seven additional companies in the healthcare space in the Southern California area, we found a pre-compiled list of healthcare companies in Southern California. Then we identify the companies covered in part one of this request to avoid them. Upon getting the list, we looked through each company's website to determine if they are in any of the specified broad categories and therapeutic area. The companies we identified are private companies, and their revenues are not available publicly, so we used credible third-party websites such as Hoovers, Crunchbase, and Craft to identify those with estimated revenues of $20 million and above. Next, we went through third-party sites such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and Craft to check if they have up to 50 employees or more. Through this approach, we were able to identify seven additional healthcare companies located in the Southern California area that meet all the criteria.

Healthcare Companies: Northern California, Raleigh / Durham

We have located the request revenue information for the following companies: Biotime, Lovance Biotherapeutics, 4D Molecular Therapeutics, Sangamo Therapeutics, Cellular Biomedicine Group, Invitae, QLSF Biotherapeutics, Catalyst Biosciences, Tizona Therapeutics, California Life Sciences Association, Argos Therapeutics Inc, Accord Healthcare Inc, Eisai Inc, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, Mayne Pharma, Merz North America Inc, Midatech Pharma, QOL Medical, RedHill Biopharma Inc, and Roivant Sciences Inc. The requested data can be found in the attached spreadsheet.

Methodology

We began our inquiry with an investigation into the SEC filings and annual reports of the specified companies. These sources provided us with the required information in many cases. However, public revenue data were not available from these sources in some cases. For these entities, we expanded our search to relevant databases (e.g., CrunchBase, Hoovers, et al.), online reports, and news articles looking for recent revenue estimates. We were successful in locating revenue estimates in this manner. In the case of Lovance Biotherapeutics, the company records no data (i.e., a mark) in its financial statement. But Lovance does report Other Income of $4.68 million; while we do not record the data in the spreadsheet, we mention it here for the sake of completion.

In many cases, this led us to annual reports and press releases documenting the total revenue for fiscal year 2018. However, public revenue data was not available from these sources in some cases due to the companies being private entities. For these entities, we expanded our search to relevant databases (e.g., CrunchBase, Hoovers, et al.), online reports, and news articles looking for recent revenue estimates. We were successful in locating revenue estimates in this manner. Finally, we used XE’s currency converter in those cases where reported revenue was in any currency other than USD.

Healthcare Companies: Texas, North Carolina

Healthcare companies in North Carolina and Texas generated revenues ranging from $80,000 to $13.45 billion in 2018. Of the eight private companies, two (Ascension Seton and Renaissance Gastroenterology) did not provide any publicly estimated annual revenue. Details for each company is provided in the North Carolina and Texas tabs of the attached spreadsheet. Below we have provided details of our research strategy as well as our findings.

Methodology

To find the company website for SPRI Clinical Trials, we scoured news publications, industry reports, and company profiles. While each source listed the same site, http://www.spriclinicaltrials.com, there was no access available. We then looked at additional sources, including the company's LinkedIn profile. Through this source, we confirmed that the company is private and appears to be currently operating.

Alcami Corporation, Asklepios BioPharmaceutical, SPRI Clinical Trials, Chiesi USA, Asuragen, Ascension Seton, Eyevance pharmaceuticals, and Renaissance Gastroenterology are all private companies and, therefore, only provide estimated revenue. Unfortunately, Ascension Seton and Renaissance Gastroenterology do not have any publicly available information provided that can be used to estimate their annual revenues for 2018. We searched for their financial information, first, by scouring the company websites for any voluntarily released information regarding their yearly revenues but only found general information on the companies such as the services they offer, major news, etc. When we didn't obtain any useful results from these sources, we searched company profiles on sites like Crunchbase, Hoovers, and Bloomberg, which usually provide the revenue information of companies. However, the only data obtained through this method was that each company is private.

Finally, we looked through the news publications of media sites like PRNewswire, Forbes, and Financial Times, as they usually publish the financial data of companies. After finding no additional information regarding revenue for either company, we concluded that neither company provided financial details publicly. Also, the University Health System, albeit being a public company, has not released its 2018 annual report. We, therefore, provided the revenue for 2017.

ReSEARCH STRATEGY

The research team focused on looking for information from the annual or financial reports from the individual companies.
