Healthcare Companies: Southern California, Part 1
While your research team did not find 7-10 companies that met all the specified criteria due to the revenue limitation, your research team found two companies located in Southern California with 50 or more employees and 2018 revenue of $20 million or more. While these companies do not provide direct therapy to patients, they do fall within the broad categories of genetics and oncology. Illumina manufactures genome sequencing equipment for the biotech industry. Human Longevity provides genome sequencing and genetic disease prevention services to consumers. The attached spreadsheet has been filled out. Read below for our full findings.
Findings
Illumina, a manufacturer & supplier of genetics equipment is based in San Diego, CA. Their products are used in the field of oncology. They have 7,300 employees and had 2018 revenue of $3.3 billion. They offer a wide range of genetics equipment and genome sequencing to biotech therapeutics companies.
Human Longevity, based in San Diego, CA, provides genome sequencing and health intelligence services aimed at genetic disease prevention & awareness to patients. They have 184 employees and estimated 2018 revenue of $35 million.
Methodology
As your research team was advised not to include companies located in Northern California or companies in Southern California with revenue of less than $20 million, we did not expand our search beyond these criteria.
Your research team performed a direct search of credible databases such as Craft, Dun & Bradstreet Hoovers, and Crunchbase, because these databases provide information on the number of employees as well as revenue information for each company. We sought companies in the broad categories of rare disease, genetics, or gene therapy within the therapeutic areas of CNS, oncology, gastro, ophthalmology, cardio, or respiratory, having 50 or more employees, 2018 revenue of at least $20 million, and located within Southern California. In every instance companies within the broad categories and therapeutic areas were located in Northern California, or were located in San Diego, but with revenue below $20M. As all the companies surveyed did not meet the research criteria, we are unable to include them in this report.
Since the companies we found were located in Northern California or had revenue of less than $20 million, we expanded our search to industry publications like Biospace, industry groups like Meeting on the Mesa, and research groups like Gene Therapy Net. Finding all the Californian companies listed to be located in Northern California or with revenue of less than $20M, this search was unfruitful as well.
Next, we targeted our search specifically to companies in the therapeutic fields of CNS, oncology, gastro, ophthalmology, cardio, and respiratory located in California but each company surveyed was either located in Northern California or had revenue of less than $20 million so we had to exclude those companies from this report. Your research team found that a great many of the companies in California within the broad categories & therapeutic areas specified are located primarily in the Palo Alto area or near waterways north of San Francisco. The remainder of companies in these fields in Southern California are located in or near San Diego, but all the companies found were in some stage of VC rounds with annual revenue around $2-3 million, well below the $20 million revenue threshold, and thus were not included in this report.
