Hair Dye Manufacturers (Rows 11 & 12)

In our search, we found information for both Godrej's and Revlon's hair products. We found that Godrej offers a wide variety of hair products for different hair types and beliefs, such the brand Abha which is vegan and organic. Other brands for Godrej include 919, Renew, Inecto, Nupur, Godrej Expert, and Godrej Renew. The only hair coloring products for Revlon that we found were Revlon and ColorSilk. We have summarized our findings below, and our findings in greater detail can be found in this spreadsheet.

REVLON

GODREJ CONSUMER PRODUCTS

RESEARCH STRATEGY

For each company, we looked for hair dye products on each of their websites. On Godrej's website, we found 9 hair dye products, while for Revlon, we found only two. ColorSilk is their main hair color product, but we decided to include the Revlon brand as well as they had hair highlights and other hair coloring products under the name. When we looked for their revenue, we realized that Godrej's revenue was in crores. Since a crore is 10 million, we found what 9862 crore was in Rupees, and then converted to USD.
9862 * 10 million = 98,620,000,000 Rupees
1 USD = 71.275 Rupees, hence
98,620,000,000/71.275 = 1,383,654,858 USD

For the rest, we used the website and credible outside sources such as Forbes and Indian Times that had information on the inner workings of each business.

Godrej is an Indian company that does not do business in the US. We looked for UK information but the first thing we saw was that Godrej sold its UK business in 2018 to focus on Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Most of the information about the performance of their brands spoke of the African, Asian, and Latin American markets, hence we expanded our scope for Godrej to what is happening to their company globally.

There were some questions in which we had to answer in the negative. One of which was whether Revlon offered vegan or organic products. We answered in the negative because we looked at the ingredients for the Revlon products, and we did not see anything alluding to such. We also did deep searches through websites for any mention of a vegan/natural Revlon offering, and we also looked through news sites to see if any announcements were made about that. All we could find is that their products are cruelty-free.

US Hair Dye Manufacturers (Rows 8-9)

In our search, we found information for both Bigen's and Revlon's hair products. We found that both Hoyu and Revlon have one permanent hair color solution each, with Bigen and ColorSilk, respectively. We found most information and put it into this spreadsheet, but we were unable to find a reliable figure for their revenue. A summary of our findings can be found below, as well as our research strategy.

REVLON

Financial and Market Health

  • Revlon brought in over $741 million in revenue in 2018.
  • Revlon's products are sold in 150 countries across the world, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, South Africa, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • They do not have a firm lead in any hair color category. In 2016, their share was around 1%, and analysts expected them to remain there until at least 2025. This is bolstered by the fact that in financial reports from Revlon in 2017 and 2019, sales of their hair color products declined.

Other Facts

Competition with P&G

HOYU

Financial and Market Health

  • Hoyu America may have brought in approximately $35,000,000 in revenue in 2018.
  • Their products are sold in over 70 countries in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Oceania, the Caribbean, and the Americas, including the US, Japan, Canada, China, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.
  • According to data from INTAGE SRI, Hoyu is the number 1 hair color company in Japan.

Other Facts

Competition with P&G

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We found most information for Hoyu and Revlon through their respective websites. However, we were unable to find a reliable source for either Hoyu America or the global company. The first strategy we implemented in finding this information was to do a search through company databases such as Crunchbase, Hoovers, Manta, etc. We didn't find any information on Crunchbase, but we found information for Hoyu Thailand and other non-US divisions on Hoyu on other sites such as Hoovers. We found a figure for Hoyu America on Buzzfile, but we could not verify this number, hence we changed strategy.

Our next strategy was to look through news sites mentioning Hoyu. We did this as news and business articles often mention how big a company is when profiling them. In this search, there were stories written by organizations such as Reuters and MarketWatch but they were all written as summaries for reports about the hair dye market, and they only mentioned Hoyu in passing. Our searches were unsuccessful for both the US and global company that's based in Japan, as basically all news releases were about the market and not about Hoyu in particular. Hence, we changed strategy again.

In this strategy, we searched for financial statements made by the company or by its executives. We believed that there must be some documents submitted to the state that could shed some light on their finances. However, the only thing that we found was a document by the Government of the State of California talking about a settlement on a lawsuit brought against Hoyu America. There was no document we could find by the federal government either, hence, we changed strategy again.

In this strategy, we decided to do some background research into the previous company, Samy Salon. In our previous searches, we found that Hoyu bought Samy Salon to establish Hoyu America. We looked up Samy Salon's finances, and found their estimated annual revenue to be around $4.4 million before their acquisition. Seeing this, we decided to input the $35 million figure we saw on Buzzfile with the caveat that it could not be verified.

Their US market share couldn't be verified either, but we safely assumed that they could not be number one with any of their products. They proudly mentioned being number one in Japan, but they failed to mention their market share anywhere else, and there was no mention of Hoyu when searching for the top selling hair dye products in America. This is why we believed it safe to assume that they could not be at the top or leading in any category in the Americas.

Even though news on Revlon's market share was from 2016, the article stated that analysts believed that their market share would remain low at least until 2025. Based on financial reports from 2017 to 2019, their performance in the hair color segment has not improved since that article came out.

US Hair Dye Manufacturers (Rows 6-7)

ConAir Corporation is the leader in the manufacture and distribution of personal care, grooming, health and beauty products, and premium kitchen electrics, tools, and cookware, is headquartered in East Windsor, New Jersey. Estee Lauder Companies, headquartered in New York, NY, sells products that are mainly skincare, makeup and fragrance that are both gentle and highly effective.

CONAIR

ESTEE LAUDER

Sub hair dye brands owned/operated by the firm:

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Based on the Research Criteria we did not find ConAir's hair dye products. Although the details on the revenue, information on the company's management, company headquarter are available.

For what we cannot find, we implemented three strategies for finding the requested information:
1. First in order to answer the request, we started by searching for compiled information through survey or consumer reports, profile analysis detailing the user journey relating to Commercial Real Estate Lease Agreements. Our primary focus is to find compiled information with regard to ConAir hair dye manufacturing details. We did not find compiled information in their respective websites with regard to hair dye manufacturing and the company revenue so we broaden our research through corporate online database in finding business information about private and public companies like crunchbase, hoovers, zoominfo among others to find the company's estimated revenue. We also broaden our research for Estee Lauder in finding hair dye brand and look for the parent company of Estee Lauder Inc. and find brands that are selling/marketing hair dye. We also use P&G products page in order to cross-reference their products to ConAir and Estee Lauder's.

2. Second was to research through survey or consumer reports, profile analysis and articles with regard to ConAir together with ConAir and Estee Lauder's innovation. What we found is that in July 2019 Transom Capital Group has acquired Conair Corporation’s professional liquids division and named as Beauty Quest Group that sells a wide range of hair care products including Aquage, RUSK and One ‘n Only, as well as private label brands for leading retailers. In order to find the Executive email for these companies, we used the hunter site.

3. Lastly, we searched for Social Media Channels like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn where we found One n' Only brand recently launched hair dye product only a week ago. However, we could not use this data in the analysis of hair dye product for the reason that the product is not yet in One n' Only website maybe because it was only launched a week ago from now.

Based on the research and findings, we came to the conclusion that there is no specific information pertaining to ConAir's hair dye manufacturing using their website for the reason that it was already sold to Transcom Capital Group. Also, ConAir's main products are personal care tools, grooming, health and beauty products tools, and premium kitchen electrics, tools, and cookware tools. We gathered the process that were identified in the respective companies' websites, articles, blogs and reports surrounding the hair dye manufacturing. I have given this request as a Partial Client Update. We have outlined all helpful information in the Key Findings and in the attached spreadsheet.

UK Hair Dye Manufacturers (Rows 3-4)

Yurily Cosmetics is located in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear and sells products in the United Kingdom. The Natural Skincare Company is located in West Chiltington, West Sussex and sells products worldwide as it can be seen in the attached spreadsheet.

YURILY COSMETICS

  • This company is based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.
  • Yurily sells its products exclusively in the United Kingdom.
  • The company manufactures skin care products, such as foundations and concealers.
  • Foundations and concealers are also sold by P&G under brand "Olay".
  • Yurily's contact information is not available in public domain.

THE NATURAL SKINCARE COMPANY

  • The Natural Skincare Company is based in West Chiltington, West Sussex.
  • This company sells its products worldwide.
  • The company manufactures products along the skin care and hair care lines which are also sold by P&G.
  • Head of the company can be contacted at amanda@thenaturalskincarecompany.co.uk
  • Their new Te Mana range from New Zealand with a beautifully designed heart logo.

YOUR RESEARCH TEAM APPLIED THE FOLLOWING STRATEGY

For the countries The Natural Skincare Company sells to, we have examined the "Terms and Conditions" section of the website. There, we found a statement that the company ships products both to Europe and Internationally, which indicates the company sells products worldwide.

For the countries Yurily sells to, our research determined the only available option when choosing a country to register an account is United Kingdom which indicates the company sells to UK customers only.

For whether the company is innovative, we have searched company press releases, blogs and reports in third-party publications. Although companies have advertised some of their new products, such as the Te Mana fragrance range, the companies haven't emphasized or announced working on innovative products, or have been talking about themselves as innovative companies, which is why we determined the companies were not innovative.

For products the company manufactures that P&G sells, our team has compared product lines P&G sells with products The Natural Skincare Company and Yurily manufacture.

However, we were unable to locate any hair dye products both the companies own. Our first strategy was to search both the company websites and scanned through the products they sell, looking for any hair dye products, but failed to locate any. The Natural Skincare Company offered shampoos, conditioners and treatments such as hair balm, but no hair dye was sold by the company. Yurily did not sell any products related to hair care.

Following this, we have turned to scanning third-party marketplaces where products of these companies are sold, such as Amazon and eBay, in order to find any hair dye products that are not offered on the company websites. Using this strategy, we found that Yurily sells eyebrow dye kits on amazon instead on its web page, but no hair dye products were connected to any of the companies.

Our team has also searched company databases and third-party market reports looking for information on recent acquisitions of hair dye brands by the companies. The idea behind the strategy was that the companies might have recently bought a hair dye brand and not yet started selling it. To find these reports, we have searched sites such as marketwatch, goldsteinresearch and Crunchbase, but no available reports mentioned any of the companies.

We were also unable to locate the revenues for both companies and leadership contact information for Yurily. To find this information, we have searched both the company websites and company databases such as Endole, but the information was not available. Since we were able to find Director of the company Yurily, Rui Yue, we have searched for his contact information in databases such as ceoemail, but the information was paywalled. As an attempt to calculate revenues, we have searched for comparison data with other companies to calculate revenue using another company revenue, but nothing relevant turned up.

Rosdon Group UK is located in Bradford, West Yorkshire and PHB Ethical Beauty is located in Mucklows Hill, Halesowen.

The link to the spreadsheet is here and the screenshots of email IDs found on Hunter.io is here. Some of the findings have been presented below.

1. ROSDON GROUP UK

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Despite a comprehensive search, we were unable to identify sub hair dye brands owned/operated by the firm, sub hair dye category, natural/vegan/organic hair dye products, and whether the company manufactures products that Procter & Gamble sells.

We began by checking the official website of the company. We examined the company reports, press releases, company blogs, etc. to find information on products they sell, looking for hair dye products and other information. But, we discovered the company only sells shampoos, conditioners, and treatments.

Next, we searched marketplaces where products of these companies are sold, such as Amazon and eBay among others. Our aim was to see if the company offers hair dye products and if any products are sold by P&G. This attempt proved to be futile as there was no information found. Instead, we found other cosmetic products of the companies.

Finally, we checked company databases and third-party market reports on recent acquisitions of hair dye brands by the companies. We performed this search based on an assumption that the companies might have recently bought a hair dye brand but hasn't started selling it yet. To find these reports, we searched sites such as Alibaba, Marketwatch, and Crunchbase. But, no such data could be traced.

We could not find any information about hair dye products for Badgequo. Similarly, we also could not find information about hair dye products for Wormser, as the company helps other companies with product "design, development, production, and filling." All the available, requested information is included in the attached spreadsheet.

Findings

1. Badgequo

  • The company's overall 2016 turnover was £17.5 million (most-recent year available), which was 40% greater than its 2015 turnover.
  • The company's headquarters are in Keighley, West Yorkshire.
  • Countries that the company sells/markets its overall products in are the UK, Germany, U.S., Australia, Europe (generally), and the Middle East (generally).
  • The company stated the following about its overall innovation: "At Badgequo we love a challenge and work hard to ensure that our private label offering is as innovative, desirable and unique as possible."
  • The company sells/markets other types of product categories that P&G is also engaged in, which are shampoo, shaving gel, soap, and beard oil.
  • Matt Goldstein is a Director at Badgequo and his email is mattgoldstein@badgequo.com.

2. Wormser Corporation

  • The company's overall, estimated revenue is $20.5 million (year not specified).
  • The company's headquarters are in Rochdale, Lancashire.
  • Countries that the company sells/markets its overall products in are Great Britain, Germany, and the U.S.
  • The company has a section of its website titled "Innovation" which includes information about eco-packaging and case studies.
  • The company sells/markets one other type of product category that P&G is also engaged in, which is skin care.
  • Joanne Ardern is a Director at Wormser Corporation. We couldn't find her direct contact information, but the phone number for the company's UK office is +44 (0) 1706 751 172.

Your Research Team Applied the Following Strategy:

We couldn't find information about Badgequo or Wormser's hair dye products after looking on their direct websites, looking very thoroughly for any articles that might have included such information, and checking their Linkedin pages. In fact, not one of the many sources that we looked at as part of that three-pronged research approach mentioned hair dye products as related to the companies whatsoever. In the case of Badgequo, we even tried to expand the scope of our research to analyze its parent company, Warpaint London. However, we also couldn't find the requested information about that company either.

Due to the aforementioned, the information that we included pertains to the companies' overall business operations and aren't specific to hair dye products. Information about senior vice presidents for Wormser Corporation was extremely limited, as the company is based in the U.S. and thus its leadership is largely located there. However, we were researching the company's UK business unit and those individuals' Linkedin profiles were largely not publicly available. Thus, Joanne Ardern was the most-senior person we could find based in the UK with a visible Linkedin profile, yet we couldn't find her direct contact information despite looking for such on Zoom Info (business contact database), in articles, and elsewhere.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To find, as required, ten companies in the UK that manufacture hair dyes, we began by searching for market reports on the hair dye industry in the UK. Our search led us to credible reports, one published by Mintel, and another published by iCrowdNewswire, among others. These reports, however, only provided information on the size and growth of the UK hair dye industry. Details of the industry were not made publicly available from the reports, as access to them was restricted behind a paywall. To find the required information, then, we leveraged companies' information databases such as Hoovers and Zoominfo, as well as credible sources such as Europages.
