Medisafe

  • Medisafe is the number one medication reminder app, according to Pharmacists. The app was created in 2012 by Omri and Rotem Shor to help patients stay safe while adhering to their medications.
  • The mission of the Medisafe is to leverage technology in taking away stress and confusion associated with managing complex prescriptions so that patients can get back to living their life.
  • The app help "foster collaboration among patients, their loved ones, and healthcare professionals through caregiver tools and reports, and helps the healthcare professionals improve health outcomes and sustain quality care initiatives."
  • Medisafe grants users personalized reminders for each of their medications and vital drug interaction warnings and also keep users connected to their caregivers through real-time missed medication alerts.
  • Medisafe app is free and can be downloaded on Google and Apple play store.
  • Other methods through which Medisafe encourages patient adherence include getting a notification when the prescription is running low, manage family medical notifications, and also notify patients which medication should not be taken and at what time.
  • Globally, 5 million people trust the app. It has also provided over 30,000 severe drug interaction warnings and manages about eight doses per second.
  • Other success metrics include that "70% of non-adherent patients Depression, Hypertension, and Diabetes patients became adherent after starting Medisafe. Also, 79% of non-adherent HIV patients increased their MPR by at least 20% after starting Medisafe."

Pillo Health

  • Pillo Health claims to simplify very complex health routines using a combination of adaptive AI and thoughtfully designed hardware.
  • The platform is "fueled by big data to create personalized experiences - tracking health care regimens and proactively scheduling interactions to ensure timely and continuous engagement."
  • Pillo is proactive in tracking health regimens and initiating, encouraging interactions that promote adherence and independence while amplifying the connection between users, health organizations, and caregivers.
  • It leverages both an "on-device and mobile notification system to remind users. When it is time to take a dose, the device will alert the user with lights and sound. The device uses either facial recognition or a pin code to dispense the dose to the appropriate user. Also, caregivers who have the mobile app will be alerted when the dose is taken."
  • The device costs $499. Users also pay a $39.99 monthly subscription.
  • There was no publicly available success metrics for the device. Reports from users suggest that the device is beneficial to older adults. It is also thought to be multi-faceted and helps keep users updated about their medications.

Three companies that encourage patient adherence or customer habit-building through their product are Dosecast, MedHelper, and my-uBox. The required information about the companies is contained in the attached slide presentation.

Dosecast (Montuno Software)

  • Montuno Software is dedicated to "empowering patients to manage their medication adherence and improve their health through the use of mobile technology."
  • Montuno Software's patient adherence software is known as Dosecast. Dosecast helps patients manage their medications in a time-efficient manner.
  • To encourage patient adherence, patients have to enter the necessary information about their medication into the app. This includes the name of the drugs, the dosage, and how and when to take it. The patient also sets up a convenient reminders schedule.
  • Dosecast adjusts to patients changing day, enabling them to take a dose early or postpone it as long as needed. It also tracks remaining quantities, sends refill reminders, and logs medication adherence while allowing patients to share the notification with their healthcare provider.
  • Other methods through which Dosecast encourages patient adherence include multi-person support, dose history and adherence, multiple drug types and multi-device sync, and a drug database.
  • Dosecast costs a monthly charge of $3 per patient. It has resulted in over 115 million doses taken correctly.
