What are some great examples of successful digital transformation in the non-profit and social enterprise sector?

Hi! Thank you for your question about some great examples of successful digital transformation in the non-profit and social enterprise sector.

In short, I have provided case studies of TM Forum, Ducks Unlimited, Philadelphia Youth Network, Ovarian Cancer Action & British Heart Foundation for non-profit and Ecosandals.com, I Got Garbage, Accenture, Platinum Group of Companies & Tate for social enterprises with details on the digital transformation and their impact. I have provided a deep dive of my findings below.

FINDINGS

We have provided 5 examples of successful digital transformation in the non-profit and social enterprise sector each along with a brief explanation of the transformation and its impact.

NON PROFIT CASE STUDIES

1. TM Forum is the global industry association driving collaboration and collective problem-solving to increase the success of communication and digital service providers and their suppliers. It is a non-profit representing 850 member companies generating $2 trillion in revenue and serving 5 billion customers across 180 countries. TM Forum underwent a digital transformation based on Mercury’s recommendations which included a new CMS platform, an html/mobile first standard for all digital properties and integration of all services and platforms into one vehicle that provided analytics, user record unification and easy addition of future services and products. Due to this transformation, member engagement is higher (148% increase in traffic in standards development community area), 174% increase in traffic in standards training area, 215% increase in traffic in membership news area – all pointing to healthy, active user engagement.

2. Ducks Unlimited is the “world’s largest and most effective” private, nonprofit waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. It delivers its work through multiple partnerships with private individuals, landowners, agencies, scientific communities and other entities. Avanade helped Ducks Unlimited undergo digital transformation to optimize their financial management systems. Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP platform will help enhance visibility into valuable information and data of its national, provincial and regional operations. The ERP solution of Microsoft Azure will replace the legacy system. This transformation will help Ducks Unlimited to access the solution from any device at any time with the ability to scale. Data can be analyzed more efficiently and accurately than before with real-time access to financial reports.

3. Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN) seeks to change the world of work which appears to be limited to young people and help a young person get an internship at companies like Lockheed Martin or Glaxo Smith Kline. Realizing that data was at the heart of PYN, it underwent a digital transformation to rebuild the data management system using Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. It used Toad Data Point from Dell, a suite of data analysis tools, to automate workflows. PYN leverages QlikView as a dashboard tool. This data-driven approach has led to savings of over 25% time of the staff and lowered the administrative rate more than anyone else.

4. Ovarian Cancer Action created a diary app for women to monitor their symptoms to help with diagnosis. If the ovarian cancer is detected in early stages, there is 90% chance of surviving for more than 5 years but it reduces to 22% if diagnosed in later stages. Electric Putty helped the organization undergo digital transformation and streamlined the experience for adding and reviewing symptoms. Using the BRCA risk tool, a simple questionnaire allows users to assess their gene risk level. Analytics was added to anonymously track the behavior of individual users. Since the launch, the app has had 162 unique users, 251 sessions, 2,209 screen views, 455 symptoms added and 14 women notified to visit their GP in two and a half weeks.

5. British Heart Foundation launched a new digital platform designed to drive engagement, convert users into fundraisers and donors, and empower them with online tools to fundraise in an easier, more personal and more social way. The transformation can be described in four parts: users driving the user journey – not departments (built on Sitecore CMS, it will learn from user behavior and in future, automatically personalize to help users find what they are looking for), integrating all systems for a single customer view (cuts down on administrative cost and human error), defragmenting the digital experience (access is provided from any device with one set of log-in credentials with a responsive web design), and empowering and enabling people to do more and to raise more (adding features to ease the fundraising process not just on basis of data capture but recognizing supporters’ motivations for donating in the first place).

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE CASE STUDIES

1. Ecosandals, an e-commerce platform, adopted a “clicks-and-mortar” digital strategy by the Wikyo Akala Project, which was started as a cooperative in 1995 by Mathew and Benson to improve the quality of lives of sandal-makers in Korogocho slums, Nairobi, Kenya. The original bricks-and-mortar project had struggled to survive during the first 6 years of operation. With the adoption of ecosandals.com, it witnessed phenomenal growth since it gave them an opportunity to re-think their operating model. The launch saw growth in labor capacity (from 5 to 30) and a rapid increase in sales, which rose to $7,000 within the first 6 months of operation. International sales saw major increases with selling price increasing from $0.15 to $40 per pair of sandals in some cases.

2. I Got Garbage (IGG) in an initiative in the area of solid waste management (SWM) and waste-picker livelihood. It helps cities to manage their waste better with the involvement of four major stakeholders: government, social and NGOs, citizens, and waste-pickers. IGG supplements its mobile apps by providing city-level assessment and planning support for sustainable SWM, training, solution modeling, roadmap definition as well as equipping-SWM stakeholders with a technology platform to support the scope of operations. They have doubled from 5,000 ragpickers in 2014 to 10,000 now. The city of Hazaribagh is an example of the successful pilot with the help of local NGOs and social enterprises, municipality, and members of Parliament. It took 6 months to make the ward “zero waste”.

3. Accenture not only applied digital technologies to existing business capabilities but transformed the way it operates, improving employee experience and helping clients become more capable digital businesses. Accenture IT developed an array of Accenture-only social enterprise capabilities that support purposeful collaboration needed to work in a globally connected world matching the way people live. Social vehicles are woven into everyday work people do with processes and business applications. It has taken Accenture on an “evolutionary path” to different states of operating.

4. Platinum Group of Companies wanted to bring Facebook-like collaboration and became a social enterprise rolling out Salesforce Chatter for all its employees. They used the single sign-on as a key to increasing the adoption rate and making it successful. They chose Intel Expressway Cloud Access 360 and within weeks of deployment saw increased usage of Chatter.

5. Tate, a collection of four major art galleries in the UK including Tate Modern (the most visited gallery devoted to modern and contemporary art in the world), underwent two digital strategy planning processes and developed its fifth gallery into a virtual place filled with immersive and engaging content, activities, experiences, and communities. It undertook the process of digitization of art, research publications, gallery experiences, editorial content and enabled a digital community. The digital products and services offer untapped revenue opportunities – paperless ticketing, e-commerce, multimedia tours to visitors’ devices, digital fundraising and customer relationship management.
