What are good sources for large lists of investment banks?
Hello! Thanks for your question about good sources for large lists of investment banks. The short version is that I was able to find 10 directories of investment banks. I highlight the information each directory provides and whether it focuses on middle market or boutique investment banks. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
There was a wealth of directories that compiled lists of investment banks regardless of size as in your example. It was important to include several of these to give you a breadth of investment banks. However, narrowing the focus to middle market and boutique investment firms meant there were not as extensive directories, but the smaller lists make it easier to find firms that meet your needs and criteria.
FINDINGS
1. DealMaker Portal: This site allows a user to get in contact with investment banks, sellers with buyers and vice versa, as well as other service providers. You can also use the site as an aggregate hub of information from companies. For this listing of investment banks you can filter the list to a particular state. The size of the banks that appear in the search vary in size so it is possible to find smaller banks, but the list is not exclusively focused on smaller investment banks.
2. MyCapital: This is a directory of over 5000 venture capital investors, investment banks, and commercial banks. It is free to search the site and post a profile of your company. Depending on the reason you need this information, you can send a mass email to investors or do the same for business loan inquiries, but this service does start at $100/month+. The nice thing about this directory is you can search for investment banks based on country or state location or the type of service you need (such as equity or research). The size of the banks that appear in the search vary in size.
3. Directory of Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) Licenses: This is a group that works with investment banks that are registered as Small Business Investment companies and provide funding for small U.S. businesses. Although the site has a link for each state, the information is all on one downloadable Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet contains information on: city, state, company name, contact name and information, the likelihood of ongoing investment, portfolio composition, scope of investment (local/regional/national) and the license date.
4. Columbia University and Columbia University: The School of International and Public Affairs Career Services Office has a pdf of boutique investment firms nationwide with brief descriptions of each firm and links to the company website.
5. AllNest and AllNest: AllNest has compiled a list of 89 investment banks with links to the company websites with a short description of the banks' services. The site also has a list of 54 middle market investment banks, including links and short descriptions.
6. Wall Street Prep: "Wall Street Prep is the trusted training provider for the world’s top investment banks, private equity firms, Fortune 1000 companies and business schools." The site provides a list of investment banks and you can either download an Excel spreadsheet or view on the web. The Excel spreadsheet contains all of the investment banks and only includes the company name and type (boutique, top global or regional) while the web lists hyperlinks to (almost) all of the companies' websites.
7. Equity Research: This site has compiled a list of top 200 investment banks which was last updated on September 2016. The list is divided into 3 categories: large international (10), Large, Mid-sized, and Prestigious Boutique (40), and Boutique (150). Each listing has a link to the company website (except for one old school company!), but the list of boutique investment banks also includes a contact person, phone number, and email address.
8. BoogarLists: This site has an alphabetized list of investment banks with a decent description and links to the firms' websites. However, there is no distinction between large, medium, and small investment banks.
9. Wall Street Mojo (middle) and Wall Street Mojo (boutique): These two lists focus on "top 10" middle market and boutique investment banks. There are links to the company websites and the articles also examine the bank services, office culture, and examine strengths and weaknesses.
10. Corporate Finance Institute: This is a list of 38 boutique investment firms, but the drawbacks to this list are the lack of direct links to the listed company websites as well as a lack of company descriptions or contact information.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, I've found 10 directories or lists of investment banks. I've highlighted what each one offers and tried to balance the all-inclusive extensive directories with smaller lists that focused on middle market or boutique investment banks.
