How much global revenue did the following titles make in both film and theatre performances from launch to date: Romeo and Juliet, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Annie
Hello! Thanks for your question about global revenues for film and stage performances. The short version is that the highest grossing worldwide film is "The Sound of Music" and the highest grossing stage performance is the original Broadway production of "Annie." An overview of my findings can be found on the attached spreadsheet. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
I was able to locate all the revenues for the Broadway performances on Playbill. "Annie" was the only theater performance that did not list revenue data. I was able to gather the data on "Annie" from a New York Times article. There have since been revivals of the musical "Annie," however, I used data from the original Broadway stage performance.
I used Box Office Mojo and The-Numbers for the film revenue amounts. Since there were two versions of the film, I included revenue from both the 1996 film "Romeo and Juliet" as well as the 2013 version. The same can be said about the 1982 and 2014 film versions of "Annie."
FINDINGS
After averaging both the film and theatre revenues, the films grossed more overall. This was not the case for each title, however. Below is a breakdown of which grossed more each title.
Romeo and Juliet: The 1996 film grossed more than the stage performance. The stage performance grossed more than the 2013 film.
Annie: The original Broadway performance grossed a substantial amount more than both versions of the film (1982 and 2014).
Conclusion
To wrap it up, the films have been more profitable overall, but many of the stage performances were more successful than their film counterpart. Thanks for using Wonder! Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
