What is the global market-size (TAM) for the board and card games industry?
Hello, and thanks for your question about the global market-size (TAM) for the board and card games industry. I have found that the global market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 29.15% between 2017 and 2021. Further to this, the largest regions in this market are the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain. Due to the reemergence of this market in recent years there are not many statistics freely available online regarding revenue and market size, I have however been able to find some revenues of individual regions. Below you will find a deep dive into my research, along with all the details as to how I came to this conclusion.
OVERVIEW
The board-game market is growing. In North America alone 2015 saw $250 million in revenue generated from sales of hobby board-games. Geek time called 2015 the year that board games bounced back. They noted how the purchase of board games has risen significantly in recent years, for example each year between 2010 and 2013 it rose between 25% and 40%. It is believed that this increase in interest in board games is due to a number of factors, "targeted updates of older brands, as well as new product entries aimed at families, combined with the continued growth of niche board games that appeal to millennial consumers" it is believed that the future is looking bright for the board game market.
I have searched for recent statistics which give the size of both the global market, as well as a breakdown for major countries. I found the Statista resources incredibly useful for providing reliable data here.
FINDINGS
After a thorough search I can confirm that there is no figure available for free online which tells us the size of the global board game market. I did find a report that contains this information, but it is necessary to purchase the report to see all the details. I believe that, as discussed above, the board game market while not new has only recently been revived. For this reasons there may have not been much interest in analysing it as a distinct market until recently. I did find, however, statistics to show that the global market is expected to grow very fast. From 2017 to 2021 it is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 29.15%. Further to this I have found that the games and puzzles market, which includes board games, was valued at $9.6 billion in 2016.
I terms of individual countries I found that Statista provides a break down on revenues of the toy and game industry in various regions. Statista tells us that the top countries in terms of sales are the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain. Therefore I have found sales for each of these individual regions:
Unfortunately statistics for this market are limited, to see more information it is necessary to have an account with Statista. They have information on France, Italy and Spain but without an account I can not provide these further details.
CONCLUSION
Overall I can conclude that the global board games market is growing rapidly, and the top countries spending money in this industry are the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain. Over the next few years we should expert to see more coverage of this industry as it grows in importance, with more published reports and statistics.
