Research STRATEGY:
Our first strategy was to search for a publicly available list from medical research and compiled databases and articles such as Sciencedirect, Science open, Lens.org, and Pubmed. After an extensive search, we could not find any lists that would define the top behavior change tech products. The articles we found addressed the topic from various aspects such as definitions in different environments, the challenges faced by health professionals attempting to influence change, and some advisory comments to simplify the process for both the health professional and the individual. One of the solutions provided is technological assistance, but there were no lists of behavior change tech products.
We extended this strategy to search through tech media articles and databases for a publicly available list of behavior change tech products on sites such as CNET, The Verge, Computer World, and TechNewsWorld. We sought to identify a list that would assist us in building the top behavior change tech products. Unfortunately, this information was not readily available in these sources. What we found in one of the sources was a testimonial of someone who was able to make a change, and how apps played a key role in his transformation. Besides such information, there were no lists available for the apps that one can use for behavior change to occur.
Our next strategy was to search through various app databases for the top 10 Behavior Change tech products. These are SimilarWeb, Appshopper, Getapp, and Sensor Tower. We searched these sources for any recurring data such as monthly active users. We searched thoroughly, but could not get the information in the first three above. Sensor Tower gives us a metrics of total monthly downloads, which we have used as a proxy to "monthly active users." The data for some are provided separately for iPhone and Android. For products in both platforms, we performed the following calculations.
Since sensor tower provide data separately for iPhone and Android, for products in both platform we performed following calculations:
Calm : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 1,000,000 + 700,000 = 1.7 Million
HeadSPace : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 800,00 + 700,000 = 1.5 Million
Elevate : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 300,00 + 300,000 = 600,000
Forest : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 70,00 + 500,000 = 570,000
Fabulous : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 200,00 + 200,000 = 400,000
Reflectly : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 200,00 + 10,000 = 210,000
Insight Timer : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 100,00 + 100,000 = 200,000
Simple Habit Meditation : MAU on iPhone + MAU on android = 90,00 + 30,000 = 120,000
Please note that we acknowledge that some users uninstall and install an application several times, and some who download a program never use it, so monthly downloads are not as accurate as monthly users would be; however, in lieu of more specific information that is paywalled, this is the closest proxy we were able to find.
