Masters of Scale Potential Guests 1-10

I've created a list of 10 diverse founders and CEOs that would make great guests for Masters of Scale, including Jack Welch, Arianna Huffington, Elon Musk, and Katrina Lake. The list, with rationales for each person, is available in the attached spreadsheet. Read on for a few additional notes!

OVERVIEW

I found several of my list entries via HootSuite's list of the 100 most influential founders/CEOs on social media. However, while this list contains some great names (Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, etc.), it is overwhelmingly white and male, especially in its top ranks. To build out the list with more diversity, I searched specifically for influential CEOs or founders who are women or people of color and found a few additional examples. These founders, while their followings aren't as active as the bigger names in the industry, still have compelling stories and, often, engaged fan bases in their own right. The list I've compiled is below -- my reasons for inclusion are outlined in the spreadsheet.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla

Jack Welch, former GE CEO and founder of the Jack Welch Management Institute

Wayne Sutton, founder of Change Catalyst (organization working toward inclusivity in the tech field)

Naveen Jain, founder of Moon Express and BlueDot

Arianna Huffington, founder of Huffington Post

Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls CODE

Emily Weiss, founder of beauty brand Glossier

Meg Whitman, outgoing CEO of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and incoming CEO of NewTV

Katrina Lake, founder of clothing subscription box brand StitchFix

CONCLUSION

I've assembled a list of 10 possible Masters of Scale guests, ranging from industry giants like Jack Welch and Elon Musk to newcomers like Stitch Fix's Katrina Lake and Kimberly Bryant of Black Girls CODE. An explanation for each person's inclusion on the list is available in the attached spreadsheet.

Masters of Scale Potential Guests 11-20

Ten additional potential guests for Masters of Scale to feature in upcoming podcasts include Jeff Bezos, Alfred Liggins, Ursula Burns, Arlan Hamilton, Kayla Itsines, Joel Contartese, Andy Frisella, Julia Hartz, Patrick Collison, and Brian D. Evans. In addition to identifying the names of people that were already interviewed or already presented in part 1 of this request series, I also made sure to avoid using co-founders/CEOs of organizations the show has already interviewed. Each person listed is associated with a U.S.-based company, and all fan base details and sources are listed in the attached spreadsheet.

METHODOLOGY

I used the Masters of Scale “About Us” details to help understand elemental factors used to select guests. I primarily made selections based on research criteria that included a U.S.-base, a healthy fan base who like the products/personality of the respective founders/CEOs, ethnic and gender diversity (as available), and co-founders/CEOs. I conducted a thorough review of available news reports, industry reports, and ranking lists to source the people presented below.

METHODOLOGY AND ASSUMPTIONS

We identified the founders enumerated in this request based on three primary approaches.

1. SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE
We identified founders who stood out in terms of followers on social media. In addition to this, we also directed our research toward lists of the most famous influencers who proceeded to found a successful company after achieving such popularity.

2. RECOGNITION
Throughout our research, we identified CEOs who were recognized by entrepreneurship media companies, such as Forbes or Business Insider, to be responsible for growing or scaling up companies rapidly upon joining their leadership.

3. COMPANY GROWTH
Lastly, we also directed our research toward founders of startups which have exhibited extreme levels of growth in terms of both popularity and sales.

Per your request, we made sure to provide a diverse choice of US-based entrepreneurs in terms of ethnicity and backgrounds.
