Research Strategy

A direct search for news on WGRK 105.7 did not uncover any recent news in the last 24 months. We also looked for recent news and press releases for Forcht Broadcasting as we suspected that much of the news for the station would be reported by the parent company. However, there were no recent stories on WGRK.

We next examined radio trade publications such as Radio Ink and Insider Radio but this did not locate any news regarding WGRK from the last 24 months.

It appears that the station is in a small market and that may explain the lack of news and big announcements about the station.

Station's "Friendly Name"

Your Research Team Applied The Following Strategy

To determine the stations' friendly name, we scanned the social media of the stations (only Facebook because the stations do not have Twitter account, Instagram or any other handle) where we could only find a post on their Facebook page citing the completion of the stations one year on October 18th. The post mentioned "one year ago today, The Rock, officially went live on the air. Happy Birthday 106.7!!!" Further, checking the recommendations and reviews in we could find many comments appreciating the ROCK music on this station. Also, The Facebook page and the official home page is called The ROCK 1067 FM / AM 1450. THE ROCK is also the LOGO of the station. Hence, we determined that the friendly name is The ROCK 1067 FM / AM 1450.

Through the same strategy, we determined the station's personality Matt “Riff-Raff” Rafferty. We could find a post from 19th September on Matt “Riff-Raff” Rafferty on, visible on the Facebook page and a special page for Matt “Riff-Raff” Rafferty from the Station's official website, citing him as the Host of the show "Rockin’ Ride with Riff-Raff." Through these two sources, we have presented him as a personality and mainly because he hosts his show on the station.

The non-available information was the one on the company's recent news such as new hires, partnerships, and endorsements, the station's competitors in the same market, the social media handle of the found executives and personalities, and the LinkedIn profile of some found executives.

One of the probable reasons for the unavailability of such information could be that since WTCO 1450 AM | 106.7 FM — Classic Rock only operates in Campbellsville and Taylor County, KY therefore area limited information has been published in the public domain by industry publications and media outlets.

It could also be possible that the station has not disclosed information such as new hires, partnerships, and endorsements because it has only completed one year in the space as indicated by their Facebook profile and post and may be currently managed by Forcht Broadcast initially.

Our research produced three news reports that were relevant but dated: one was from 2008 while two were released in 2016.

Research Strategy:

What Information Was Not Available:

Information on the Station's friendly name and some of the executive's LinkedIn or Social Media handles were not available.

Strategies Deployed to Find The Information:

Strategy 1

To find information relating to the company's friendly name and official profiles of the company's executives, the research team went through the official company website of WTLO 1480 AM | 97.7 FM. The aim was to find any official declaration and announcements made by the company on its website and other social media profiles since companies usually tend to make such information public through its official channels. Although the official website provided information relating to the name used by the company to promote itself along with a list of the executives, the website did not mention any other name that the company might have used to promote itself or that the audience might have come up with to refer to the channel.

Apart from the company's website, we also looked into the company's social media accounts on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We also searched extensively through the company's LinkedIn profile. Although, we found relevant profiles of some of the executives such as Brian Simmons, Mike Tarter and Amy Stroud, not every profile relating to the company's executive list was available. There was also no mention of any friendly names.

Strategy 2

We then searched through major radio industry trade publications such as All Access, RAMP, Inside Radio, Radio Ink, among others for any useful information on the company's friendly name and executive profiles. The aim behind this search was to find relevant information relating to audience reaction to the channel's programs, or any interview or declaration of event that the executives may have attended. However, being a regional channel limited mainly within the Somerset and Pulaski counties of Kentucky State, we could not find much coverage of this nature. Additionally, since the channel was one of many held by the parent company Forcht Broadcast, the coverage was often focused on the Forcht Broadcast rather than the specific channel.

Strategy 3

Finally, we went through local news sources such as Commonwealth Journal, somerset-kentucky.com, newsbreak.com, Somerset106.com among others. The objective was to find either interviews of the specific channel's executives or any article covering the legacy or importance of the channel that would mention any friendly name used by them. A similar search with a similar objective was also carried out in larger news sources such as Forbes, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Business Insider, Fortune and Bloomberg, among others. However, it was evident that the station was always referred to by its official name WTLO 1480 AM or 97.7 FM. There was no reference to any friendly name in any of the articles. Also, interviews, opinions and event coverage were limited to the Forcht Broadcasting personalities like Mike Tarter(President/CEO at Forcht Broadcasting). Therefore, no other reference which could lead to a LinkedIn or social media profile of the specific channel executives could be found.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Our initial search for any recent news about the station on the public domain did not provide any articles about the station. We also expanded our search past the recommended 24 months but there was no news articles on the station. We could only find reviews and ratings from review and analytics resources.

We then explored the station's website in the hope that it had highlighted any media mentions. The station's website only features news reports on the happenings in the community as well as its own achievement but does not provide any information on media mentions from other resources.

Third, we explored WANV FM's social media handles hoping that it had reposted or tagged media mentions. We also ran a deep scan of local and regional media/new outlets such as News Break and Sentinel Echo. Again, our research did not bear any fruits. We noticed that WANV FM is a subsidiary of Forcht Broadcasting and most news reports focus on the parent company, which seems to oversee most operations. For example, the hiring of Travis Shortt as WANV FM's General Manager was credited to Forcht Broadcasting.

Notably, our extensive search did not produce any LinkedIn profiles for Dave Begley and Terry Harris. We even expanded our research to Forcht Broadcasting on LinkedIn, as well as SAM 103.9 WWEL-FM where Terry Harris also works as a presenter.

Research Strategy

In conducting the media scan, we found news on the station on the website of the parent company, Forcht Broadcasting. These news articles focused on new appointments for the group, however, a few mentioned WSIP FM and therefore those were included. The partnerships of the station were mainly found on their website.

In relation to their competitors, we explored the radio stations in the state of Kentucky and surrounding areas that broadcast new country. We found one station that also broadcasts new country and most of the others tend to focus on country in general or traditional/classic country music. We also included those stations that did not broadcast country at all but were within twenty miles of WSIP FM. These include WKCB Radio Station, WZQQ-FM Hyden, WJSO-FM Pikeville, and WLJC-FM Beattyville.

We found all the programs, however, some programs had no name, so in those instances, only the host was mentioned. This was the case for shows hosted by Cathy Taylor, Biscuit, and Kyle Hatch. In other instances, the name of the show was mentioned but not the host.

The station only has three market managers, these persons were mentioned in our findings. Therefore, positions such as VP Programming, Director or VP of Sales, Market President were not found at the station.

Forcht Broadcasting - WCDQ FM 106.3 – Mainstream Country

WCDQ FM 106.3 is a radio station based in Crawfordsville, Indiana, primarily airing country music. Findings on recent news, competitors, on-air personalities, shows, executives, of the station and their friendly name are detailed as follows.

WCDQ FM 106.3

  • No recent news specific to WCDQ FM 106.3 can be found on the web and major radio industry trade publications. Within the last 24 months, there is only an article that mentions an internal annual meeting between its General Manager and other management colleagues at Forcht Broadcasting.
  • Other competitors of WCDQ FM 106.3, which are also country music radio stations based in Indiana, include WKKG FM 101.5 “Indiana Country”, WLHK FM 97.1 “Hank FM”, WFMS FM 95.5 “The Country Station”, and WKUZ FM 95.9 “KISS FM”.
  • Highlighted personalities of WCDQ FM 106.3 include Bradley Wayne, who hosts Solid Country Mid-Days which airs on weekdays, 12:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m and Dave Peach who hosts Swap Shop that airs on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • The station also hosts two shows that are not local or exclusive to the station called The Ty Bentli Show, hosted by Ty Bentli on weekdays, 6:00 a.m to 10:00 p.m. and The Blair Garner Show, hosted by Blair Garner on weekdays 12:00 a.m to 6:00 a.m.
  • Some staff members of WCDQ FM 106.3 include the Program Director Brad Pendleton, General Manager Dave Peach, Operations and Digital Media Courtney Conkright, and Brittney Combs. Other staff that might be of interest include Forcht Broadcasting Sales Managers, Deb Ayers and Dave Childers.
  • The station’s friendly name is “True Country”. Their website, Facebook page, and Amazon/ Alexa listing all feature this brand name.

Research Strategy

A direct search yielded no relevant news for WCDQ FM 106.3 within 24 months. We suspect significant new hires, partnerships, and endorsements would be parked under their parent company, Forcht Broadcasting. We suspect some staff and functions may be integrated with Forcht Broadcasting as we could not find some key personnel such as Sales Managers specifically tor the station. We then attempted to check on the unlikely possibility of radio industry trade publications attempting to de-list them from search engines by searching using the search engines of those major publications. Our check verified that none of those publications were de-listing their results on search engines as similar outdated results appeared, but we once again found no relevant news specific to the radio within 24 months. Hence, we concluded that there is no relevant news on the public domain for the station during this period.
In this context, we define competition as other radios airing the same country music genre based in or near Crawfordsville. Although they provide online radio services, we deem all country music radios on the internet as an overly broad qualification that might not be robust or relevant in this context. Since we’re unable to find direct competition for the radio in Crawfordsville, we’ve listed country music radio stations based in Indiana instead.

  • No other news for Classic Hits has been found published online in the last 18-24 months. This has been determined by searches across news sources, trade publications, and Forcht Broadcasting's website, all of which showed no news for Classic Hits in the last 24 months.

Competitors

Shows & Personalities

  • Both Classic Hits 92.1 FM and 1550 AM broadcast the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball. With 162 games over 6 months, these broadcasts take up a significant portion of the summer schedule.
  • Sports broadcaster - Marty Brennaman - served 46 years as the play-by-play announcer of the Cincinnati Reds before retiring this year. He would have been an important voice on 92.1 FM / 1550 AM in Crawfordsville during the summer months.
  • Classic Hits also broadcasts a syndicated segment titled "Wedding Planning With Pem". These are short segments that provide advice on wedding planning and serve as a platform for the wedding planning industry.

Station Executives

Research Strategy

First, we searched the station's website for any relevant information regarding news, schedules, personalities, and staff. This was followed by searching for any news across different trade publications and journals. Industry databases were used to find competitors in the region and different social media networks were searched for any profiles of executives and staff. Classic Hits is a radio station that is programmed to play music and commercials 24 hours a day with just a few segments of local news and syndicated programs added throughout the day. As such it was difficult to find many news articles and people associated with the station.

Research Strategy

The research team searched the WVLN web page to locate information about its programming and personalities, which directed us to the CBS Sports Radio page to gather all the programming information. We did a search of local newspapers in Olney--the Olney Gazzette and the Olney Daily Mail--to locate any news stories or press releases about WVLN. Given that this is an affiliate station in a small market, we restricted news searches to these periodicals; we did not locate any recent stories in either paper. We then did a search on the Forcht Broadcasting web page and located one recent story about the news director.

To locate competitors, we visited the website Radio LineUp that describes all the FM and AM stations in the same market as WVLN. We then worked through the list to find potential competitors and visited relevant websites. To locate the friendly name of the station, we searched streaming sites for WVLN. Finally, we located the executives on WVLN's web page and then searched LinkedIn and Facebook for their individual accounts.

Your Research Team Applied The Following Strategy

Our first strategy was to search directly through the official website for WIKK FM 103.5 The Rockin’ Eagle for any information on the company's recent news such as new hires, partnerships, and endorsements, competitors, station's personalities and shows, and station's executives. However, the news releases were only on the company’s websites included general music industry news. Information on the company's recent news such as new hires, partnerships, and endorsements, and competitors was not available.
Our second strategy was to look into the company’s website which has only provided a link to its single social media account on Facebook. Thereby, we scanned through the posts from the past 2 years to find any useful information on the company's recent news such as new hires, partnerships, and endorsements, station's personalities and shows, and station's executives. However, the posts were primarily related to general music industry news and local events. In posts related to its "Morning show with Bobbie Ashley", the company has mentioned the personalities appearing on the show such as Desmond Child, Sheila E, Micahlan Boney; and promoting rock show for Alice Cooper.
Our third strategy was to search through major radio industry trade publications such as All Access, RAMP, Inside Radio, and Radio Ink for any useful information on the company's recent news, competitors, station's personalities and shows and station's executives. However, none of the industry publications have published any WIKK 103.5 related news articles in the past 2 years. Further, we started to search through various radio directories and databases for finding radio stations located in Newton, Illinois since WIKK 103.5 specifically operates in this particular area. However, it was evident that there are no suitable competitors for WIKK 103.5 in the same market.
Finally, we searched through company databases such as Hoovers, Crunchbase and Bloomberg for existing profiles on WIKK FM 103.5 since such profiles usually provide a list of competitors for the companies. However, none of the credible databases had any existing profile on WIKK FM 103.5. Although we were able to find the company’s profile on Owler, none of the competitors mentioned in the profile are radio stations that operate in Newton Illinois and thereby, cannot be considered as competitors of 103.5 The Eagle.
