Food & Agriculture Byproduct Recovery/Waste Management

Key Takeaways

Introduction

This research brief contains 5 waste recovery companies operating in Ontario and/or the rest of Canada, as well as a list of 15 bakeries, most of which are operating in Ontario. These companies and bakeries, as well as other accompanying details, can be found in tabs 1 and 2 of this spreadsheet respectively.

The bakeries included in this brief were chosen from top/best lists from various industry practitioners and publications. Our logic is detailed in the Research Strategy section.

Summary of Findings

Food Waste Recovery Companies

  • The five companies identified as SPB's competitors include Butler Disposal and Recycling, Upak, Prorec, Redux, and Second Harvest. Except for Second Harvest, all remaining companies appear to explicitly offer bakery waste management services.
  • Second Harvest, Upak, and Butler Disposal and Recycling all have headquarters in Ontario. Upak is estimated to have over 300 employees- the largest number of employees among all five companies.

  • Butler appears to primarily target bakeries, but from customer testimonials and service descriptions, it also appears to work with beverage companies, videographers, and tire companies. Some of Redux's clients include franchise owners of McDonald's and Wendy's restaurants, as well as the Richmond Arena, and Cafe Amore Bistro. It claims that it does not disclose the full list of its clients (for their privacy) but may be willing to share them with existing or potential customers.

Research Strategy

For this research on food waste recovery companies and bakeries in Canada, we leveraged the most reputable sources of information that were available in the public domain, including the company websites, local directories, best/top lists, as well as industry news.

The bakeries included in this brief were gleaned from best and/or top lists compiled by food industry pundits such as the Food Network Canada, Three Best Rated, publications such as Narcity and Fashion Magazine, as well as rating sites such as Yelp and Trip Advisor. The research team did not find any lists on the biggest bakeries in Canada and a review of the chosen bakeries did not reveal any financial information that could be used to rate the bakeries in terms of revenue (to establish the largest to the smallest).
