Hello! Thanks for your question about the services for students with disabilities that are offered at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Case Western Reserve University, Clarkson University, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.
The short version is that all seven of the universities listed above have either a separate website, or a section of their website, that lists the accommodations, and services on offer for students with disabilities. The disability policies at all of the universities are made to be in compliance with The Americans with Disabilities Act.
You will find a deep dive of my findings below.
METHODOLOGY
I was able to find the services at each university by searching <Name of University> + services for students with disabilities.
SERVICES OFFERED AT EACH UNIVERSITY
Caltech has a separate website for its disability services. Students can use the services once they have self-identified their needs to the school.
Services offered include:
–a campus map that shows all of the easiest paths of travel, at-grade entries, power-assisted entries, and parking for students with disabilities (click all the boxes under ADA Accessibility to view these on the map)
CMU has a section on their website that they call the Disability Resources Center. There is not only information here for students with disabilities, but also for staff and visitors.
Services offered include:
–special accommodation, which may include "academic adjustments, and auxiliary aids and services" are given to students once they have self-identified themselves to the school
–books in alternate formats*
–emergency waiting areas *
–interpreters or live captioning*
–proctored exams*
–service animals*
–and short-term disability needs*
CWRU has a section of their website devoted to Disability Resources. In order to use any of the services listed, the student must fill out a Disclosure Form. The school makes it clear that the services they list are not exhaustive, and they are committed to catering to any need that a student may have.
Services offered include:
–testing accommodations
–adaptive equipment and assistive technology
–scheduling assistance
–transportation assistance
–alternate format for print materials
–note-taking assistance
–interpreters
–parking assistance
–temporary disability needs
Clarkson refers to their services as AccessABILITY Services. The student needs are determined on a case-by-case basis and after an "evaluative interview is conducted with the student."
Services offered include:
According to the section of their website for Disability Support Services, "The Cooper Union will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities." In order to be considered documented, students must submit a form through the Office of Student Affairs.
Services offered include:
–accommodations are decided on a case-by-case basis. Students must apply for the accommodations they seek, and once approved they will recieve a letter of apporval. They then must meet with their professors for each class seperately before the semester starts in order to discuss how the accommodations will be implemented.
Embry-Riddle provides support services once a student has self-declared their disability and provided the proper documentation. The university states that while, accommodations are determined case-by-case, there are some that are commonly used.
Services offered include:
–accommodative housing
–environmental modifications
–interpreters
–dealing with academic content concerns
–assistive technology
–reduced course loads
–disability parking
–allowed use of service dogs on campus
–a Disability Support Services Organization on campus that "supports students with permanent physical disabilities and students with learning disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder."
Olin College has a Special Accommodations Policy on their website where they state that they "will consider modification to academic programs where necessary to ensure that our requirements are not discriminatory, as long as the modifications do not fundamentally alter the nature of our programs." Students with disabilities are directed to contact the Office of Student Life to identify themselves as in need and have an accommodation plan laid out for them.
Services offered include:
–academic accommodation
–help with organizational and time management skills
–faculty notification
–academic advising
–adaptive technology assistance
–accessibility accommodation
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, all of the universities offer similar accommodation policies that are in compliance with the The Americans with Disabilities Act. In order to use these services, students must self-identify their needs and then either apply for certain services or work with the school to come up with a plan to best help them in their scholarly endeavours.
