Find the cost per kilogram of textile fibers (example silk, nylon, linen, cotton, etc.) over time
Hello! Thanks for asking Wonder about the cost per kilogram for textile fibers over time. In short, very little data was publicly available for textile pricing in the US or China. The price of cotton in the US has ranged from 72.21 cents per pound in 2008 to 85.99 cents per pound in 2017. The price of fine wool in the US has ranged from 901.77 cents per kilogram in 2008 to 1,433.22 cents per kilogram in May 2017. While prices for silk in the US were not available, the Producer Price Index shows that prices have risen from 2008 to 2016, based on the 1982 baseline data.
I have compiled as much data as I could find within the typical time frame for a Wonder response. Where possible, I have provided data for the past ten years. The results of my research, which focus primarily on silk, cotton, and wool, are in the attached spreadsheet. If you would like us to search for additional data, please send us a new request, and we'll be happy to pick up where we left off. Below, please find the results of my research.
OVERVIEW
There are a variety of pricing indexes for textiles, which makes this request particularly challenging. Also, many of the online databases that house this information are hidden behind paywalls or registration barriers. So, I have consulted textile industry sources in the US and China, including sources related to specific textiles, such as cotton and silk. I have compiled as much publicly available data as I could find within the typical time frame for a Wonder response. I've included my findings in the attached spreadsheet to make the data easier to compare.
SILK
The website Emerging Textiles has some useful information for China; however, most of their data is behind a registration wall. I was able to find a few publicly available reports at this website and have compiled that data in the spreadsheet.
For the US, the only information I could find was the Producer Price Index data, but that shows pricing changes over time, rather than actual prices. I've included that data in the spreadsheet, but please note that these are not prices, but instead price fluctuations, based on the baseline year 1982, which is 100.
COTTON
The National Cotton Council of America offers the most complete textile-specific data I was able to find. It offers a searchable database that allows filtering by year.
The China Sourcing Update, compiled by the Fung Business Intelligence Centre, offers a monthly report on the cotton, wool, silk, and grey goose down markets. However, I was only able to find a few of these reports that were publicly available.
Also, pricing appears to be listed in "yuan per tonne" rather than by kilogram. The China Cotton (CC) Index has several indices based on cotton quality, making it somewhat challenging to provide average prices. The CCE Index 328 appears to be the most commonly tracked price, though much of this data is not publicly available.
WOOL
The IndexMundi database provided useful data for the US prices for fine wool. I found a couple of references to China data in the China Sourcing Updates.
GOOSE AND DUCK DOWN
During my research, I came across a bit of data for goose and duck down prices in the China Sourcing Updates, so I have included that information in the spreadsheet as well.
SUMMARY
In short, I have provided data on the cotton, wool, and silk prices in the US, as well as a few comparative China prices, for cotton, silk, and wool, as well as goose and duck down, in the attached spreadsheet.
