The requested information for each company has been entered into the attached spreadsheet. A brief outline of our findings has also been provided below.

Findings

Research Strategy

We were unable to find funding information for all companies except Algama and Drumshanbo Gin. We searched for each company's financial records, as well as searched through financial databases such as Crunchbase and DealRoom, but found no mention of funding rounds for any of the companies. It was found that Nirvana Brewery started a crowd-funding request for £135,000 in 2015 for their new alcohol-free beer, but we could not find any evidence showing how much, if any, they actually received.

Research Strategy

To fulfill this request, we commenced our research on the company website where we were able to retrieve most of the required information, including the company headquarters, type of beverage, type of packaging, and logo. We made use of the third-party business information website Crunchbase, to retrieve information on the total funding received by the companies.

During our research, we discovered that a majority of the companies had their funding amounts in other currencies such as the British Pound. In other to arrive at the funding amounts in Euros, we made use of a currency converter, to convert the funding amounts received by the companies from their listed currencies to Euros. We have provided these converted figures in the spreadsheet.

At the end of our research, we were unable to determine the funding amounts for four companies which are Hempfy, Ethics Coffee, Chaga Health, and Share. Our attempts at locating this information began with a search on each company's website, but the information was not available. Next, we proceeded to check third-party business sites such as Crunchbase and Zoom Info but this information was not available either. Lastly, we searched for the information from press releases/news stories published by notable business news websites such as Business Insider, but this method also failed to return results. This led us to the conclusion that all four companies have not raised any funds at the time of our research. We have provided all other information in the project spreadsheet.

BABO Beverages, Noveltea, Drop Bear Beer, Hop King, DEYA Brewing Company and Gosnells of London all offer alcoholic beverages. Philosoffee and No1 Rosemary Water's products are cold brew coffee and flavored water, respectively. All of the startups included in rows 28-35 of the attached spreadsheet come from the United Kingdom or Germany.

SELECTED FINDINGS

  • Hop King, DEYA Brewing Company and Drop Bear Beer are all the UK-based startups that offer craft beer.
  • BABO Beverages' product is beer mixed with lemonade, packaged in glass bottles. The company is headquartered in Freisburg, Germany.
  • Philosoffee, DEYA Brewing Company, and BABO Beverages didn't disclose their funding, but they revealed that it came from savings or other private sources, like family and friends.
  • Newcastle-based Noveltea sells different flavors of tea mixed with various kinds of spirits. So far, the company raised €606,571 in two funding rounds.
  • Gosnells of London offers a modern version of mead, sold both in glass bottles and cans.
  • No1 Rosemary Water is a London-based startup that raised €1.5 million so far. The company's product is rosemary-flavored water that is packaged in glass bottles, tetra packs, and shot packs.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Gosnells of London, DEYA Brewing Company, Philosoffee, Drop Bear Beer, and BABO Beverages all don't disclose their funding. To find it, we started by searching company databases, such as Crunchbase or Angel.co. They often include such information, which can be seen on the examples of companies like Noveltea or Hop King. However, out of all the companies, we only found a profile for Philosoffee (under an old name), which doesn't include funding information.

Next, we searched through articles in the food and beverage industry, startup and business media. We also looked through interviews with founders. Since most of the companies received some media attention, we were hoping that while discussing their success, the authors or interviewers would bring up the financials. While we discovered that BABO Beverages, DEYA, and Philosoffee were funded from private savings, no exact figures were provided. Please note that we used Google Translate to translate the articles published on German sites.

Lastly, we analyzed the company websites and social media profiles. We thought that they might have published press releases, news articles or social media posts about their funding rounds or overall financing to date. However, the only information we found was the status update by Drop Bear Beer, which said that they recently raised £100,000 in a crowdfunding campaign.

For the other companies, we used the figures from Crunchbase, which we converted from pounds to euro using XE Converter.

Noveltea: £519,900 = €606,571
Hop King: £166.600 = €194,266
No1 Rosemary Water: £1,300,000 = €1,516,368

We also converted the amount that was recently raised by Drop Bear Beer (£100,000 to €116,635).

Summary of Findings

Research Strategy

The funding amount raised by Seedlip, Ugly Drinks, Gik Live, and Jimmy Joy are not publicly available. To identify the required information, we first examined the websites of Seedlip, Ugly Drinks, Gik Live, and Jimmy Joy. It is assumed that these startups would be proud to announce funding news as they are related to their valuations. However, an examination of their websites has only revealed information such as their history, products, and other general information not related to funding.

Next, we examined the business profile of Seedlip, Ugly Drinks, Gik Live, and Jimmy Joy published on CrunchBase, CB Insights, and others. It is assumed that these business databases would publish publicly available funding information of these startups. An examination of these business databases has only revealed companies that have invested in Seedlip (Distill Ventures) and Gik Live (University of the Basque Country ). The business profiles of Ugly Drinks and Jimmy Joy did not publish any funding information.

Lastly, we examined articles that mentioned Seedlip, Ugly Drinks, Gik Live, and Jimmy Joy. It is assumed that third-party articles may contain industry analysts revealing the estimated funding amount raised by these startups. However, articles on Seedlip, Gik Live, and Jimmy Joy have only provided information such as investors and general product information. An article on Ugly Drinks stated that the startup has recently closed a “multi-million-dollar financing round.” Therefore, based on publicly available information, we have determined that Seedlip, Ugly Drinks, and Gik Live have raised an undisclosed amount of funding while Jimmy Joy has not received any funding.

Temperance Spirit Company, Norfolk Gin, and Spirits of Virtue are three additional European beverage startups founded within the last five years. The requested details on these startups have been compiled in the attached spreadsheet. A brief overview of the findings can be found below:

Temperance Spirit Company

  • Founded in 2015, Temperance Spirit Company offers two non-alcoholic spirits, Teetotal GnT and Teetotal Cuba Libre. The company sold more than 500,000 bottles of Teetotal GnT in 2017.
  • The company's second spirit Teetotal Cuba Libre was launched in 2018.
  • The latest volume sold by the company could not be located in the public domain.

Norfolk Gin

  • Norfolk Gin was founded by husband and wife Jonathan Redding and Alison in 2014.
  • The couple started selling Norfolk Gin in June 2015 and has sold nearly 25,000 bottles so far. Of these, 10,000 bottles were sold in 2017 and 12,000 bottles were sold in 2018.

Spirits of Virtue

  • Founded in 2018, Spirits of Virtue offers alcohol-free spirits.
  • Last year, the company's production director, Kerr Nicoll, expected to sell 1 million bottles of the company's No-Sin-Gin in 2019.
  • In October 2019, the company increased its production capacity to 60,000 bottles per week.

Research Strategy

To find additional top European beverage startups founded within the last five years and provide their volume sold without duplicating the startups already identified in the previous researches, we scoured through resources such as Drinkpreneur, Beverage Daily, My Drink Beverages, Food Navigator, Crunchbase, EU Startups, The Spirits Business, Tech Crunch, and Business Insider among several others. We also looked for beverages in specific categories such as "alternative water" (including coconut water, fiber water, sap/birch water, mineral water, carbonated water, sparkling water, cactus water, etc.), alcohol-free beverages, herbal tea (e.g., Virtue Ice Tea and SOTI) and Kombucha startups (e.g., Kompassion Kombucha, Happy Kombucha, and Freshly Fermented), meal drinks, juices, and energy drinks.

Since there were no precompiled lists of top beverage startups with volume sold or revenue available, we decided to review the websites of each beverage startups listed by the above-mentioned resources individually. Drinkpreneur had listed dozens of beverage startups while The Guardian, BBC, The Spirits Business, Alcohol Change, Beverage Daily, Just Drinks, and MarketWatch have also mentioned several "rising" or "best" spirits, alcohol-free, and alternative water startups. We reviewed the websites and/or LinkedIn profiles of these startups, but found that most of these startups were launched in 2012 or before that. For the few startups that were founded within the last five years and were based in Europe, we attempted to look for their volume sold.

To find the volume (units) sold by these beverage startups, we first looked for this information on their official websites and LinkedIn profiles. However, for most startups, this information wasn't available on the company website and hence we resorted to industry resources such as MarketWatch; food, beverage, and startups-related websites such as Drinkpreneur, Food Engineering, and Beverage Daily; and startup funding websites such as Crowd Cube, Seedrs, and Crowd Fund Insider. It was assumed that some beverage startups mention their volume sold in their "pitch" on funding websites. However, we were unable to find the volume sold by the shortlisted startups using this approach. As a last resort, we consulted news and media resources including BBC, The Guardian, The Irish Times, The Telegraph, Insider.co, Business Insider, PR Newswire, and TechCrunch, among others to find any news and media articles that mention the volume sold by the startups. This approach proved helpful in locating the volume sold for three additional startups.

The startups whose volume sold could not be located (e.g., Sibberi, Caliente, and M*lkman among others) by any of these methods were excluded from our listing of top beverage startups.

  • It specializes in cannabis based beverages.

Algama

 Research Strategy

We began our search by looking into industry-specific reports from websites such as Drink Innovation, EU Startups, Next Organic, and Drinkpreneur for three of the top European beverage startups. After a thorough search through these channels, we were able to identify several beverage companies that were established over the past five years. We then chose three of the top startups in the beverage space based on their sales figures. For each identified company, we have provided its website, volume sold in units, and the founding year.

We were unable to provide the total volume figures for any of the companies. Our research team employed several research approaches for finding the total sales volume figure; however, due to the lack of publicly available information, we couldn't provide the required information.

We first searched through the official websites of these companies; we were hoping to find published data for the total volume sold for their beverages. Unfortunately, there were no such publicly released documents or releases from the company which cited any mentions about the sales volume. The company websites provided several other information pints, including detailed descriptions of the beverages and the business profile of the company.

We also searched through industry publications and media sources to find out if the company had made any records or had received any recognition, concerning its sales volumes. We combed through sources like FoodBev, BusinessWire, EU News, Daily Market Insight. While we were able to find news mentions for the said companies, none of them provided any relevant mentions about their sales volumes or any related records or recognition.

Lastly, the research team searched through each company's social media accounts, as well as company listings on databases such as Pitchbook, Crowdcube, and Crunchbase, and any interviews of company executives, hoping to find any mention of sales volumes. However, none of these sources provided any relevant information, and they only highlighted the company's founding year, the current social status, the number of their social followers.

After exhausting multiple research approaches, we were unable to provide the total sales volume for the listed companies and have marked N/A in column C of the attached spreadsheet.

The three additional European beverage startups are Brain Fud, Chaga Health, and Ethics Coffee. The requested information is provided in the attached spreadsheet, Rows 40-42, columns A to D and J.

Brain Fud

  • Founding Year: 2016.
  • An average beverage at Brain Fud costs about €19 (calculated as (19+19+19)/3).

Ethics Coffee

  • Founding Year: 2018.
  • An average beverage at Ethics Coffee costs about €11.95 (calculated as (11.9+12)/2).

Chaga Health

  • Founding Year: 2014.
  • An average beverage at Chaga Health costs about £13.49.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We were unable to find the volume sold for the three European beverage startups: Brain Fud, Chaga Health, and Ethics Coffee. The team searched through the companies' official websites, hoping to find any mention of the volume sold for their beverages. Unfortunately, after examining multiple pages on the websites, we were unable to find any information about the volume sold for each company. Some details we found include a description of each beverage, beverage content, prices, and history.

Next, we attempted the following strategy to estimate the volume sold for each beverage brand: Determining the average price of their beverage offerings and divide by the annual revenues to reach the units sold. Unfortunately, this strategy proved futile since these firms are privately-held, meaning that they aren't obliged to disclose their financials, including revenues, to the public. Pricing information was available for each beverage brand.

Lastly, the research team searched through each company's social media accounts, as well as company listings on websites such as Pitchbook, Crowdcube, and Crunchbase, and any interviews of company executives, hoping to find any mention of sold volumes or any data points that we could utilize. However, the only information that arose from this approach include each company's founding year, the current social status, the number of their social followers, among others. However, we have presented alternative metrics in lieu of volume sold.

The three additional European beverage startups are Crafty Nectar, Pocket Cocktails & Nix and Kix. The requested information is provided in the attached spreadsheet, Rows 37-39, columns A to D and J.

Crafty Nectar

Pocket Cocktails

Nix and Kix

  • Volume Sold: N/A
  • Total Funding Amount: £500K
  • Founding Year: 2014

Research Strategy

We were unable to find the volume sold for the two European beverage startups Pocket Cocktails & Nix and Kix. However, we have presented alternative metrics of business success in lieu of volume sold. We first began by examining each company's website, hoping to find any mention of volume sold of their beverages. We searched through Pocket Cocktails and Nix & Kix. After exhaustively examining each website, we were unable to find any information about the sold volume of each company. The only information we found was a description of their beverages, content, prices, and history of each company.

Second, we then searched for any data points we can use to triangulate the request. We exhaustively searched through each company's social media accounts and company listings through Pitchbook, Crowdcube, Crunchbase, among others hoping to find any data points we could use to triangulate. We also tried to search for any interviews of company executives hoping to find any mention of sold volumes or any data points that we could use. However, the information we found helpful was the founding year of each company. Other information we found was fundings for each company, the current social status of each company, the number of their social followers, among others.

Lastly, we then attempted to triangulate. We first searched for the average price of each beverage company through Pocket Cocktails and Nix & Kix for any price value of each company's beverage. Next, we tried to search for each company's annual sales, hoping to get the estimated annual sold volume per unit of each company. We searched through each company's website and company listing such as Hoover. However, we found no information on each company's annual sales. The information we found was fundings received by each company.

In conclusion, there was no preexisting information on the volume sold for the two European beverage startups Pocket Cocktails & Nix and Kix. Nevertheless, we were able to identify the founding year of each startup beverage company. In addition, we have presented alternative data, such as the funding amount received by each company. Pocket Cocktails total funding amount was €400K while Nix & Kix total funding amount was £500K. We have provided these as alternative metrics of business success in lieu of volume sold due to lack of publicly available information.

Research Strategy

In order to find three of the top European beverage startups, we started our research by looking for precompiled lists of beverage startups in Europe. We scoured through resources such as Crunchbase, EU Startups, Tech Crunch, CB Insights, Entrepreneur.com, and The Balance SMB among several others. Although no such precompiled lists were available, we were able to identify some European beverage startups that offer meal drinks (e.g., Huel, Feed, Jimmy Joy, etc.), bottled mineral-rich water (e.g., Rejuvenation Water), energy drinks (e.g., Buffalo Energy Drinks), CBD-infused drinks, and alcohol-free beers. We then shortlisted these startups by eliminating those that were founded before 2014.

In order to find the volume (units) sold by these beverage startups, we first looked for this information on their official websites. For some startups, this information wasn't available on the company website and hence we resorted to news, media, food, beverage, and startups-related websites, as well as company databases and funding websites including Crunchbase, Inc.com, Drinkpreneur, Food Engineering, Crowd Cube, and Crowd Fund Insider. Using this approach, we were able to find and/or triangulate the estimated volume sold by these startups.
