How many estate planning attorneys are there in the United States?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the number of estate planning attorneys in the United States. The short version is that there are nearly 70,000 attorneys and firms dedicated to estate planning. We were unable to fully separate out the private attorneys from the firms, but believe that this will still be a useful ballpark figure for your purposes. We have given the breakdown of the numbers on the attached spreadsheet. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
We started our search with an effort to find a source that had already researched the answer. When this proved fruitless, we checked to see if the American Bar Association (ABA) had made this information public. Finally, we resorted to looking up estate planning law attorneys and firms in the Whitepages, operating under the understanding that such individuals and firms would want to be readily found. We then tallied the results ourselves in a spreadsheet and ran these numbers against state populations and geographic regions.
RESULTS
Please see the linked spreadsheet for our breakdown. We found a total of 69,767 estate planning attorneys and firms listed on Whitepages.com. While of course firms may include several attorneys, more than one of which may cover a particular specialty, we believe this to be sufficient to give us some useful ballpark figures.
To our surprise, the state with the highest density of estate planning attorneys (i.e., the highest number of estate planning attorneys and firms as compared to the general population) is Ohio, followed by Washington DC, Michigan, and Washington state. New York was in 10th place. Equally surprising, the Midwest is the region with the highest density of estate attorneys. Unsurprisingly, the South had the lowest density, though due to its larger area and state populations, the South did have the largest number of estate attorneys overall. Likewise, the states with the largest populations tended to have the largest total number of estate attorneys.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, there are nearly 70,000 estate planning attorneys and firms listed on Whitepages.com, and we have given the breakdown by state and region on the linked spreadsheet for your perusal.
