Equine transport market (both ground and air) in the US: Determine the general $ value that these services amount to.
The equine transportation market is a highly fractured market with a lot of small owner operators and very few large companies. The market value is around $90 M. The average revenue for companies in this space was $.267 M. The largest company with publicly available revenue was Bob Hubbard Horse Transportation with about $14 M in sales.
Fractured market
As a niche market, there are no publicly available pre-compiled statistics on the market. To further complicate the issue, the market is made up of hundreds of small owner/operator companies. There are very few mid sized (over $1 M in revenue) companies and no large companies (over $100 M in revenue) that operate in this space.
Because of that, we had to estimate from lists of companies that had publicly available revenue. To compile this list, we used Hoovers, which is the most complete publicly-available resource we have at our disposal. Hoovers provides a search tool that allowed us to narrow our search to exclude any business other than those in the equine transport industry. Using this method, we were able to find nearly 300 companies in the United States. Since Hoovers also provides us with revenues, we were able to add up the sales of these 300 companies and determine that the market is roughly $90 million in size. We've included this list for your convenience. While we are confident this estimate is likely close to the actual number, it is possible that some companies are missing from Hoovers' database, which would cause the market to be slightly larger than reported.
Please note that
Many of the larger companies do both air and ground transport and so these numbers are valid for both ground and air transport. We did not include horse trailer manufacturers which is another significant piece of the market since many horse owners transport their own horses. With the focus on companies that actually transport horses by air and ground, the $90M estimate is likely very close to the actual market value.
Conclusion
The equine transportation market (air and ground) is around $90 M. The market is made up largely of small owner operators with a few larger businesses.
