Electrical SCADA Market in the U.S.

As of 2018, the major automation companies that also provide supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems in North America based on overall revenue from automation services were Emerson, Rockwell Automation, ABB, Schneider Electric, General Electric, and Siemens. Since the SCADA specific revenue of companies wasn't publicly available, we selected the overall automation revenue to rank these companies while ensuring that only companies providing SCADA products were selected from the automation company list. The detailed description of these companies is provided below. As extensive research revealed no information regarding each company's market share specific to SCADA, their overall revenue from automation was used instead.

Research Strategy

We started the research for top players in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems market in the U.S. by searching across business magazines, industry articles, consultancy reports, company websites, research, and advisory firm reports, market reports on databases, and academic research reports. We were able to find some reports that might contain the required information, such as Business Wire's report. However, all those reports were locked behind a paywall. As we were unable to find the top players in the market, specific to SCADA product offerings through the direct search, we decided to attempt to triangulate the information.
From the initial search, we understood that the SCADA systems are a specific type of automation service provided by automation companies. In fact, most automation companies also offer other automation tools and services like the programmable logic controller (PLC), human machine interface (HMI), artificial neural network (ANN), distributed control system (DCS), and robotics. Also, the type of automation services offered, and the target industry for application of these services differ from company to company involved in providing automation solutions.

Given this initial understanding of automation services, our team decided to research for the automation companies in detail. This process led us to some reports that listed the top automation companies in North America and around the world based on their revenue. The research team further reviewed this list to ensure whether all the automation companies listed were providing SCADA products.
This research made us realize that Fortive and Ametek EIG, which are listed as fourth and sixth respectively on the list of the largest automation companies in North America based on revenue, don't provide any SCADA products. The research team thus refined the list as per the scope of the research, which was to identify top players in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems market in the U.S. and hence, Fortive and Ametek EIG were omitted from the research. Therefore, based on overall revenue, the final list of top automation companies that also provide SCADA services in North America included companies like Emerson, Rockwell Automation, ABB, Schneider Electric, General Electric, and Siemens.
In order to determine each company’s market share for SCADA products and services, we then searched for the market size of the automation industry, for different automation solutions provided by automation companies, and the share of each of these automation solutions towards the company revenue through various market reports. Our strategy was to determine the market share of each automation company in regards to the total automation market size. This data would then help in deciding the revenue generated by SCADA automation in that company, which can then be compared to the global SCADA market size to estimate the SCADA market share for each company. However, the information required for the triangulation was found to be locked behind a paywall, such as the Fortune Business Insights report. Also, the companies researched did not seem to provide this segmented information in their annual reports or reports to their investors. Therefore, this strategy proved to be futile.

Lastly, we attempted to triangulate the information using the percentage of the automation industry that is represented by SCADA and applying the percentage as possible estimation of the company's market share regarding SCADA. Still, we recognized that there are other variables, such as industry specialization and the company's actual focus on SCADA, that would restrict the accuracy of this triangulation, and the findings lacked reasonable confidence. Therefore, this strategy also did not work.

After applying all the research strategies, we were able to determine that market share information specific to SCADA could not be found or triangulated. We thus decided to provide the overall automation company market share and the total company revenue for top automation companies as a helpful alternative finding.
