They are known for offering deep discounts of up to 90% on high-end shoes, accessories, and apparel. 6pm receives its inventory from Zappos after it does not sell. 6pm differs from most companies when it comes to marketing and advertising. Their footprint is quite small in this area and instead, they choose to focus on customer service. A large portion of what they would spend on advertising and marketing is used on customer service to provide exceptional service. 75% of their sales come from repeat customers. They are very involved in charities and in their community where they are headquartered, sponsoring Thanksgiving dinners for the needy, pet adoptions and multiple shoe related outreach charities.

Areas Of Note

When accessing information about various 6pm topics that relate to charities, community involvement and customer service initiatives, you are directed to Zappo for this information.

To obtain the advertising campaigns for 6pm, several methods were used. After consulting WeLoveAd, Moat, iSpotTV, and Adage, only one campaign was discovered. This was a collection of JPEG ads that are featured on internet pages. To get a better understanding of their advertising strategies, we consulted social media. We discovered they use Facebook and Instagram to promote their daily deals and suggest items to purchase. This along with their Associates Program, where other websites promote 6pm via links, is how 6pm reaches their customers through advertising.

To obtain the marketing budget we first attempted to access this information through their annual report. After consulting Annual Reports and having no success we directly researched the company through the SEC. The SEC shared that Zappos, the parent company, was not required to file their annual report. Realizing this, we went deeper and searched for Amazon's filing status, and it was the same. The last report on file that was searchable was dated 2011.

Information on how the company handles marketing was obtained and shared in the spreadsheet. After learning that they do not spend a large portion of their budget on marketing or advertising, it made sense that we could not locate any information from leading sites that share press releases, such as PR Newswire and Business Wire.

In a final attempt to locate specific numbers related to their marketing and advertising budget, we consulted market research firms such as Grandview and Wakefield, but there was no research conducted specifically on Zappos or 6pm. Statista also returned no usable results.

Information for sales spikes was provided from Amazon, the parent company and verified with Google Trends.

OVERVIEW OF FINDINGS

eBay has around 180 million active buyers worldwide. Our research team has entered the requested information for eBay into row 4, columns R-W on the attached spreadsheet.

Research Methodology

Research Strategy 1:

We commenced our research by scouring the eBay website for information such as the number of users or active buyers, reviews, and functionalities. The information on active buyers was available under the fast facts section of investors' tab of the corporate website of eBay. For information on functionalities, we had to dig deeper into the product information page. For information on who moderates the reviews on the eBay site, we had to comb through the feedback policies provided under the help section. It was here that we came across one of the frequently asked questions which proved instrumental in arriving at the inference that eBay moderates the reviews/feedback.

Research Strategy 2:

We referred to SimilarWeb for information on monthly website visitors. For information on the average number of reviews per product, we dug deeper into the product ratings of multiple products. This information is usually present on the product information page. Please note that the average number of reviews per product varies drastically from product to product on eBay, say for example a memory card reader had only 12 product ratings/reviews while a projection alarm clock had 266 product ratings. It was during the above search that we could discover a finding that not all products are rated on eBay. However, feedback is available for all products on this e-commerce website. We have included some examples of such products that do not have ratings but have feedback in our research in sources 8,9,10,11. We have also included a brief analysis based on the number of feedback and the number of the products sold on eBay in the section that follows 'High-Level Findings'. Please note that we are including this analysis on the research brief as we have not entered it on the spreadsheet.

Research Strategy 3:

For all other information such as the number of retailers/sellers and membership program, we scoured e-commerce and retail-related websites such as Inside Retail, Small Business Trends, The Balance Small Business, among others.

High-level findings

  • The number of active eBay buyers is 180 million, globally.
  • According to SimilarWeb, eBay had 1.12 billion monthly visitors in March 2019.
  • eBay has functionalities such as call-to-action buttons to add to cart, buy now, and add to watch list.
  • The e-commerce website does not have live chat now.
  • In June 2018, eBay had launched eBay Plus, a membership program for an annual fee of $49 in Australia. Prior to this, the e-commerce website had launched the same program in Germany in 2015.

ADDITIONAL INSIGHT: BRIEF ANALYSIS ON THE FEEDBACK ON EBAY PRODUCT INFORMATION PAGE

We performed a brief analysis based on the number of feedback provided on the product information page on the eBay website. Our research team intended to check the percentage of buyers of a certain product on the e-commerce site who actually review the product they purchase. We executed the above analysis on some products listed on eBay as mentioned below.

A certain tote bag listed on eBay has a total of 758 feedback out of a total of 7,005 units of this product sold on the e-commerce site. So, 758÷7,005=0.1082. In terms of percentage, this equates to 10.82% of the buyers of this product have actually provided feedback for this product.

Similarly, for a travel hiking bag listed on eBay has a total of 80 feedback out of 2,548 units of this product sold on the website. So, 80÷ 2,548 =0.03139=3.14% of the buyers of this product have actually provided feedback for this product.

Next, we did perform the calculations for garden water hose which had 2,223 feedback out of 23,821 units sold. So, 2,223 ÷ 23,821 =0.09332=9.33% of the buyers of this product have actually provided feedback for this product.

Finally, we executed the calculation on iPad leather case which had 1,591 feedback and 55,729 units sold. So, 1,591 ÷ 55,729=0.02854=2.85% of the buyers of this product have actually provided feedback for this product.

If we study the obtained percentage figures above, we can ascertain affirmatively that the number of feedback and reviews vary drastically from product to product.

Summary of Findings

Etsy has 35.8 million active buyers and 1.98 million active sellers with an average website visitors of 197 million per month. Esty's membership level includes Esty Standard, Esty Plus, and Esty Premium (expected to be launched in 2019). On average, they have 4,180 reviews on their jewelry products. To determine the average number of reviews, we sampled the jewelry product line on Esty. We identified the number of reviews on each of the 30 products available and took an average of the total reviews.

Wayfair is one of the world’s largest online shopping destinations offering more than 14 million items to its customers including home furnishings, decor, home improvement, house wares, bed and bath, and more. We have provided the required information including the number of visitors and monthly website visitors in the attached spreadsheet row 8, columns R-W.

Methodology

We began by exploring the company's website to find the required details. During the search, we noted that Wayfair is an online retailer hence does not have retailers on the website. The company also has a membership program known as MyWay. We also located samples of products that have received customer reviews which we used to calculate the average number of reviews per product. Also, on Wayfair's website, customers are allowed to rate and give product reviews to products that they have purchased and also view products that have already been rated by other customers. According to an article by Digiday, Wayfair is “heavily driven by product reviews” and uses different opportunity to drive consumer awareness about their products based on how consumers see them through monitoring the reviews. Customers can make a call through a phone number provided or talk to an agent if they want to make a purchase or inquiry. However, we were unable to locate statistics on the number of users and annual or monthly website users from the company's website.

To determine the monthly visitors on the website we used SimilarWeb that provided us with the statistics. According to this source, Wayfair has had a total of 64.16 million visits in the past six months. We used this figure to calculate the monthly website's visits. We also used Statista to search for the website's number of users. We were fortunate to find that in 2018 the company had 15.16 million users.

In the past six months, the Wayfair website has had a total visit of 64.16 million. We divided this number of visits by six to determine the average monthly visits.

To determine the average number of reviews per product, we used a sample of 48 products that have been reviewed by customers and made the following calculations.

Hayneedle E-commerce 3

The requested details in columns R to W for Hayneedle have been provided in the attached spreadsheet, except for the number of users the company has. Hayneedle has five million monthly visitors on average and currently has about 250 retailers listed. Hayneedle offers three membership types: Home Rewards, which is free; Hayneedle at work for businesses; and Hayneedle Trade for design professionals. Below is a detailed explanation of our research approach to finding the number of users, as the possible reason why this data is not available in the public domain.

Methodology

To identify the number of users Hayneedle has, we commenced our research by first examining company assets such as websites, fact sheet, and social media profiles. These assets while useful in some regards did not provide any direct data on the number of users. We also found that Hayneedle was first acquired by Jet.com before the latter was acquired by Walmart. This information led us to also examining Walmart's annual reports and SEC filings. However, this approach did not also yield any tangible results.

While data from Walmart shows the number of stores customer it has and the percentage that comes from online channels, the data was not segmented by the brands that make up the Walmart Group. Walmart currently has about 260 million customers, with 3% from online channels. Our attempts to find the percentages of each individual ecommerce platform's contribution to the 3% online customers proved futile. Without this extra data point, we were unable to triangulate Hayneedle's number of users.

Our next approach was to conduct a press search on the premise that news reports, press releases, and interviews can provide insight into how a company is doing financially, including the number of users a company has. While there were several articles surrounding Walmart's acquisition of its parent company as well as other profiles and news reports on Hayneedle, none had the needed data point; either as a direct answer or data points that would allow us to triangulate an answer.

We used available figures from Similarweb's site, Guesswork's website, and 6 pm's official website to calculate the number of user, monthly website visitors, and the average of product reviews respectively as explained in our methodology below.


METHODOLOGY

We commenced our search for the total number of users by exploring 6 pm's official website; however, there was no mention of the number of users. What we found on 6 pm's website was data related to reviews, and shipping offers.

The next strategy was to direct our research towards any pre-compiled information that is available by scouring through reputable sources such as Statista, CBinsights, and Newswire. Regrettably, we found no information on the number of users; instead, we found general information related to 6 pm's business model.

Finally, with the aid of calculations from Guessswork's website, we unearthed the conversion rate statistics for 6 pm's number of active users, and on Similarweb's site, we got the monthly 6 pm's website visitors.

CALCULATION FOR ACTIVE USERS.

From Guesswork's website, we got total visitors to be 13,100,000 million. The number of registered users is 14%.
