Recycled Down Market Size

After an exhaustive search, we were unable to identify the market size of the recycled down market in the US. Research revealed that this is likely due to recycled down's recent entry in the market in 2019 by Prauden. Recycled down is included in the animal fiber and material market and in the preferred fiber and material market reports as preferred down. Relevant insights regarding recycled down, the preferred fiber and materials and the recycled animal fiber markets are provided below.

Recycled Down Insights

Preferred Fiber and Material and Animal Fiber Insights

  • Animal fiber usage was 2% to 4% by companies in the home, textiles, and apparel subsectors in 2017 and increased to 8% in 2018. The Apparel and Outdoor/Sports subsectors reported an 11% and 15% share of animal fiber usage, respectively.
  • Preferred down excludes feathers and down that is from birds that have been force-fed or live-plucked and come from farms that are certified by either the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), the Traceable Down Standard (TDS), or Downpass Standard. Preferred down also includes recycled down such as those products certified to Global Recycled Standard (GRS), Recycled Content Standard (RCS), SCS Recycled Content (RC) Standard).
  • Textile Exchange expanded its Preferred Fiber and Materials market reporting categories to include preferred down. TE reports preferred down grew by 54%, and the majority of preferred down is certified to TE's Responsible Down Standard.TE provides the Textile Exchange database that lists suppliers of preferred down.
  • It is predicted that the US market will experience significant market development for high-performance preferred fibers.
  • Animal and plant fibers' demand is globally driven by end-user industries such as textiles for items such as "luxury clothes such as carpets, decorations, laces, tents, sails, bagging, sacks, floor coverings and commercial fabrics among others".

Strategy

Our first strategy was to identify the current or a recent market size of the US recycled down market from market reports for recycled down and for preferred fiber and materials. The current market size was not available so we expanded the search to include previous years. These sources did not reveal any market size for recycled down, and reports for the preferred fiber and materials market reveal this information is made difficult for global analysis due to an inability to collect primary data from the suppliers and there are data gaps and inconsistencies. It is likely that is why the US market size for recycled down is not publicly available.
As another strategy to estimate the market size, we tried to find sources such as market analysis or articles that provided an estimated CAGR for recycled down. This search only yielded results for down and feather, not recycled down. We then tried to identify other estimates or forecasts for other possible triangulation points such as market share, volume, and total addressable market, but these searches also did not yield any results. We expanded the search for preferred down market analysis from sources such as Textile Exchange to see if there would be a breakdown for the recycled down segment but that also did not yield results specific to recycled down.
As a final strategy, we attempted to identify top US companies that produce recycled down to attempt to estimate market size, however the only brands identified were those such as Patagonia that use recycled down in their apparel. We expanded to find the annual revenue of companies such as Re:Down but that was also unavailable.
Research revealed useful insights from reputable sources such as Textile Exchange reveal Prauden transformed the industry by manufacturing recycled down products in 2019, so there has not been enough time for there to be enough information to regarding the recycled down market.

Recycled Down, Market Share

After scouring public database and public reports and attempting to use several proxies to calculate market share, we were unable to find an estimated market share of the United States recycled down and feather market. However, we were able to estimate that the United States down and feather market could be close to $91.16 million USD by using the top players in the market and their revenue as a proxy assuming they occupy the majority of the market.

Global Down and Feather Market Size

United States Down and Feather Market Size

  • The estimated market size of the United States down and feather market using the top players in the market as a proxy is $91.16 million accounting for 16.39% of the global market.

United States Recycled Down and Feather Market Share

  • After calculating the estimated market size of the United State down and feather market, we attempted to take the estimated annual revenue of the key players in the recycled down and feather market identified in our previous research as a proxy for the market share.
  • Companies:
  • Unfortunately, after scouring company profiles, the company website, press releases, news reports, and public reports, we were unable to find any data related to the estimated or actual annual revenue of Re:Down. In addition, the other company found in our previous research was no headquartered in the United State and, therefore, would not be useful to calculate United States market share.

Recycled Down Market: Growth

The future growth rate of the recycled down market in the United States is not publicly available. We have provided other statistical insights that indicate the current and historical growth rate as useful findings. For example, according to Tae Hwang, co-founder of Re:Down, orders from apparel brands for recycled down doubled in 2019.

Useful Findings

  • The global down and feather market is expected to grow at 3.39% CAGR in the period 2020-2026.
  • Recycled down has been in use in the European market since 2013. Ternua and Nau were among the first few brands to start offering jackets and vests made of recycled down in the US in 2015.
  • In 2016, as part of its sustainability efforts, Patagonia started using recycled down. As of Feb 2019, it offered 50 recycled down jackets.
  • According to Tae Hwang, co-founder of Re:Down, orders from apparel brands for recycled down doubled in 2019. Mammut, Patagonia, Bergans, Arket, Everland, Mountain Equipment are some prominent brands that source recycled down from Re:Down.
  • The number of Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified sites grew from 108 in 2014 to 539 in 2016 to 696 in 2017, to 904 in 2018, indicating growing animal-treatment-ethics concerns.
  • China accounts for 70-90% of the annual down (non-recycled) produced (270,000 mt) and 418 of the 696 global RDS-certified sites. The United States has 33 RDS-certified sites.

Research Strategy

In order to fulfill this request, we searched research reports, industry portals, surveys, and media sources for the growth rate of the US recycled-down industry. As we were unable to find the required information in these sources, we searched for recycled down adoption statistics by brands such as Patagonia, interviews by the founders of Re:Down (Patagonia's recycled down supplier), and any pertinent reports by Bolliet Consulting, the parent of Re:Down. Similarly, we also searched for data referencing other recycled down companies such as Downlite, Navarpluma (Neokdun), and Rohdex. However, we did not find the statistic. As most research reports we obtained were specific to the global down market, and as there is very little publicly available statistical information pertaining to the recycled down market, we believe the projected growth rate of the US recycled down industry is not publicly available.

Research Strategy

To determine European down exporters, we reviewed a wide range of industry reports and associations. Non-profit agencies and government databases along with B2B marketplaces were also reviewed. Few reports, databases and articles list the players in the region but we were able to identify a few that export to the US. Once we had done this, we reviewed the company websites and other articles to determine some of the exporters in this field.
