Digital Child Monitoring: Part 1

There is no evidence that the information regarding historic usage rates and employee size for any of the companies, nor the number of users and revenue growth for McAfee Family, FamilyTime Premium, and Net Sanity are available in the public domain. The current number of users for TeenSafe, McAfee Family, Net Sanity, and FamilyTime Premium is over 1 million, 100,000, 1,000, and 100,000 respectively. Further details are available in the attached spreadsheet.

Methodology

In order to determine the user data and number of employees for Teensafe, McAgee Family, Net Sanity, and FamilyTime Premium, research began through official company websites and annual reports with the goal of determining the number of users, employees, and revenue for 2013 and 2018, as well as growth for all three areas over the last 5 years. Through this search, we were able to identify the number of users for TeenSafe for 2014 and 2018. Unfortunately, the company data from 2012 and 2013 was not available through their website. The remaining companies did not provide any useful data through these sources. This is most likely due to these companies being privately held, therefore, they do not release annual reports or publicize revenue and employee data.

Research then expanded to company profiles through databases like LinkedIn, Open Corporate, Craft.co, Bloomberg, ZoomInfo, CrunchBase and Manta. Since, most companies were privately held, most of these sources provided little to no results. Through LinkedIn, we found current employee information regarding TeenSafe and Net Sanity. Unfortunately, McAfee Family and FamilyTime Premium did not have profiles through LinkedIn or CrunchBase that disclosed employee information. Additionally, the McAfee profile on both LinkedIn and CrunchBase was not limited specifically to McAfee Family but rather for the company as a whole.
Since no direct information was available on the companies’ number of users, we attempted to find the number of app downloads for each of the apps through the app stores. The idea here was to provide the number of app downloads as a proxy in absence of any relevant information. We were able to find the number of installs for each of the apps that had not been found by other means, namely McAfee Family, FamilyTime Premium, and Net Sanity, Inc.
Finally, we attempted to find additional information through news articles and press releases for regarding number of users, employees and revenue growth for McAfee Family and FamilyTime Premium. We searched through Forbes, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Business insider. Unfortunately, the majority of articles and releases were focused on the company as a whole rather than the specific sectors. Any articles that did mention these specific sectors did not provide the relevant information needed to completely answer the request. Thereby, we concluded that the requested information on number of users, employees and revenue growth for these companies is not available in the public domain. While we believe this is mostly due to the companies in question being privately held, it may also be that the companies do not disclose the information for competitive reasons.

TEENSAFE

Since the 2013 and 2012 version of the website did not provide the user information, I have provided the information for 2014. The number of users has increased from over 500,000 in 2014 to over 1 million in 2018. According to their LinkedIn profile, TeenSafe currently has 11 employees.

MCAFEE FAMILY

No useful information could be found for McAfee Family regarding past users or employees as information was only available for the overall company. According to the Google Play Store, the app Safe Family has over 100,000 installs.

NET SANITY

Net Sanity was founded in 2013 and its revenue reached $2.9 million in 2018. The app Net Sanity on Google play store has over 1,000 installs.

FAMILYTIME PREMIUM

FamilyTime Premium was founded in 2014. The app FamilyTime Premium on Google play store has over 100,000 installs.

Digital Child Monitoring: Part 2

We compiled the data regarding user numbers and the number of employees for year 2013 and 2018 for the following companies: Kaspersky Safe Kids, Locategy, Net Nanny, Qustodio. We compiled our full findings in rows 6-9 of the attached spreadsheet.

DIGITAL CHILD MONITORING

For this research, we focused on providing data on the number of users and the number of employees for two separate years (2013 and 2018) for the following companies:

As part of our research, we were unable to provide data regarding Locategy's number of employees nor users in 2012/2013. The reason for this is the fact that the company was founded in 2016.

Additionally, no data exists regarding Qustudio's number of users in 2012/2013. The reason for this is the fact that the company was founded in late 2012. Therefore, the company was not publishing any data on their user number statistics in the first year of their operations.

CONCLUSION

Our full findings have been compiled in the attached spreadsheet.

Digital Child Monitoring: Part 3

In 2018, the user data and number of employees for Symantec Norton Family Premier, WebWatcher, Circle Home, and KidGuard were 1,000,000 and 11,800; 1,000,000 and 11-50; 100,000 and 11-50; and under $2,000,000 of revenue and 1-10, respectively. In 2013, the user data and number of employees for Symantec Norton Family Premier were 100,000 and 4,700, respectively. The 2013 user data for Web Watcher, Circle Home, and Kid Guard could not be found. The 2018 user data for Kid Guard is also unavailable. The spreadsheet can be found here.

Methodology

We first looked into the reason why the various data needed were unavailable. We first studied the LinkedIn profiles of Circle Home and Kid Guard and found that the companies were not yet created at the time of the requested information, and for this reason, the 2013 user data for both Circle Home and Kid Guard was not available.

We then decided to look into Web Watcher’s company to identify as to why their user data was not available. We looked if they had official documentation of the data so we can use it for triangulation. However, we were able to find Web Watcher’s parent company on their official site and learned that the company information on the United States database for corporations had not yet been updated since the time of the requested data. Hence, making the data unavailable as a valid document source. We decided to search for credible articles about the company’s user data, revenue amount, and the number of employees in 2012 and 2013. However, there were no credible sources for the required data.

We also looked into the 2018 user data of Kid Guard. We looked into the official website of the company to see if there were any mention of the product’s user data. We also looked into articles that may provide the product’s user data. We also searched for valid written profiles and reviews such as the one that could be found in the company’s LinkedIn account. The search only led us to the description of the company’s services and not its user base. We furthered our search to look for evidence of users downloading the software. From this search, we found that Kid Guard uses a personalized service to download the product and not something public like Google Play. Hence, the data being publicly unavailable. We also found no evidence about the data going public and this might be because the company was only recently founded. We used the revenue range provided by Kid Guard to act as a proxy for the user data.

There were also some differences with the product’s name and the company that provides the product. We decided to clarify this and found information that detailed the differences between the product’s name and the company that provides the product. The company behind Symantec Norton Family Premier is Symantec Corporation while the company behind the Circle Home product is Circle Media Labs Incorporated. We found no distinction between Web Watcher’s company and product name, and Kid Guard’s company and product name.
