  • Green initiatives and regulations surrounding the manufacturing of plastic products, which is the material that a lot of desk accessories are made from, may impact the production of traditionally-made office supplies.
  • Office supplies, in particular, have seen a surge in products made from recycled materials.
  • An example of this is manila folders being made out of recycled fibers and eco-friendly clipboards that contain 100% recycled plastic.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We started our research by identifying industry reports that highlight the market size and growth for the office supply industry in the US. We leveraged the data from IBISWorld report 2019 to ascertain the industry growth from 2014 to 2019. According to the report, the US office supply stores industry has declined annually at a rate of 5.6% from 2014 to 2019. Further, it is found that the industry shrunk by 2.3% between the years 2018-2019 alone. Next, we used the CAGR calculator to calculate the industry size and growth from 2014 to 2019.

CALCULATION FOR 2018-2019
  • In 2019, the total revenue of the industry is estimated to reach $12.90 billion, with a decline of -2.3% (YoY).
  • In 2018, the total revenue of the industry was $13.20 billion. [$12.90 billion = $13.20 billion — ($13.20 billion x 2.3%)]
CALCULATION FOR 2014-2018
  • According to the report, the annualized industry decline of -5.6% is noted from 2014 to 2018. We used the average CAGR -5.6% with 2018 total revenue of $13.20 billion to calculate the industry size from 2014 to 2018 by using CAGR reverse formula.
  • 2018 Market Size = $13.20 billion; CAGR of -5.6%. [$13.20 billion x -5.6% (or 0.056) = -$0.7392 billion]
  • 2017 Market Size = 2018 Market size — [$13.20 billion x -5.6% (or 0.056)] = $13.20billion — ($13.20x-5.6%) = $13.98 billion
  • Using the same method of calculation we found that:
  • 2016 revenue = $14.81 billion orc$13.98 billion — ($13.98 x -5.6%) = $14.81 billion
  • 2015 revenue = $15.69 billion or $14.81 billion — ($14.81 x -5.6%) = $15.69 billion
  • 2014 revenue = $16.62 billion or $15.69 billion — ($15.69 x -5.6%) = $16.62 billion
The total revenue of the US office supplies industry from 2014 to 2019 is found to $87.2 billion ($12.9 bn + $13.2 bn + $13.98 bn + $14.81 bn + $15.69 bn + $16.62 bn)

RESEARCH STRATEGY:

We first looked for the required data points on market research websites like IBISWorld, Market Research, eResearcher, Statista, digialcommerce360, and Market Watch. Except for one very minimal informing article from Digital Commerce 360, there was no research report with breakdown analysis of the decline of US Office Supply market.

Next, we investigated websites of large office supplier companies to look into their financial reports of the last few years with the hope of identifying product-wise sales and their related trends to triangulate the needed information. For this, we checked the financial reports wherever available of Office Depot, Quill, Staples, and others. Still, there was no product-wise breakdown of their revenues. Hence, we could not find data points from which to triangulate the needed breakdown of US office supply market decline.

Therefore, we researched news articles that discussed trends in US office supply market. We scoured the websites of Business Insider, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Washington Post, Stores Magazine, PR Newswire, CNBC, and Wall Street Journal. This investigation yielded few articles with a mention of Office supplies in passing, but none discussed trends or breakdown of US Office Supply market decline. Furthermore, we expanded the research scope to North America and subsequently to global, and then extrapolating the data we found. Unfortunately, we didn't succeed in either of these ventures in finding information relevant to the required data.

Thus, as per information available in the public domain, except that the decreasing demand of paper and related office supplies like lead and pencils has a cause in decline of US Office Supply market, there is no other trend publicly available. Our research revealed that it was either detailed studies of the required data have not yet been conducted or they are shielded from public access.
