Demographics - Instagram
Instagram is a "photo and video sharing platform" with a very strong presence in internet. In January 2018, the website had 800 million monthly users in the US, up from 600 million in 2017. In 2019, Instagram is expected to reach 104.5 million monthly active users in the US alone.
The breakdown of the user demographics of the photo-sharing social network, Instagram is outlined below and detailed in the attached spreadsheet. Our breakdown includes segmentation by age, sex, education, and income level, as well as the ethnicity of the Instagram users.
Youths have always been the dominant population among Instagram users. In 2017, Instagram had 1.4 million users between the ages of 0-11 in the US and 4.2 million Instagram users between the ages of 12-17 in the US. Similarly, 53 million Instagram users are between 18-29; 29 million between 30-49; 16 million between 50-64 and 7 million over 65 years of age in the US.
In 2018, 2.87% of children aged 0-11, 16.8% of teenagers aged 12-17, 64% of youths aged 18-29 are Instagram users. Similarly, Instagram is used by 40% of people with age 30-49, 21% aged 50-65 and 10% aged over 65.
A higher proportion of women use Instagram than men. According to the 2018 report of Statista, 39% of the American women and 30% of American men use this photo-sharing app, Instagram.
Instagram users tend to be highly educated. Among Americans with the college degree or higher, 42% use Instagram. However, this figure drops to 29% of people with high school degree or below and 36% of people with some college education in the US.
Statista's 2018 report stated that 60% of Americans with the annual income of $100k or over are Instagram users, which proves the Pew Institute's description of Instagram users’ pockets as “pretty deep” based on the breakdown of their income of 2016. Currently, 55% people with an annual income of $70k-80k are Instagram users in the US. Similarly, 44% with income below $30k/yr, 45% with income between $30-60k/yr, 36% with income between $60k-80k/yr, and 46% with income between $80k-100k/yr use Instagram actively.
The Black, non-Hispanic population make up a large proportion of Instagram users. About 47% of this population use Instagram whereas, 21% of while, the non-Hispanic population in the US are Instagram users. Similarly, 38% of Hispanic Americans use Instagram actively.
