Data/Market Research

Data on the total number of households, the percentage of households with internet access, and the percentage of households with internet access and connected devices for US, UK, Australia, Germany, France, India, Brazil and Japan has been provided in the attached spreadsheet.

Selected Findings

  • In 2020, there were 128.45 million households in the US. In 2019, 86.6% of US households had internet access.
  • In 2020, there were 27.8 million households in the UK. In the same year, 91.4% of UK households had computers.
  • In 2016, there were 8.3 million households in Australia. Between 2016 to 2017, 86% of Australian households had internet access.
  • In 2020, there were 41.7 million households in Germany. In the same year, 96% of German households had internet access.
  • In 2020, there were 28.86 million households in France. In 2019, 90% of French households had internet access.

Calculations

Number of households in the UK with internet access

  • 2020, there were 27.8 million households in the UK. In the same year, the percentage of households in the UK with internet access was 96%. Therefore, the number of households in the UK with internet access was (96% * 27.8 million) = 26.7 million

Number of households in Japan with internet access

  • According to Cisco, "In Japan, there would be 9 million internet households (22% of all internet households) generating more than 250 gigabytes per month in 2020."
  • If 9 million makes up 22% of all the households with internet, then the total number of households with internet in Japan is (100% * 9 million / 22%) = 40.9 million

Research Strategy

For the UK, after looking through government websites such as Office of National Statistics and Gov.UK, statistical database websites such as Statista and IBIS World, and news and media sites such as Evening Standard and ISPreview, we were not able to find the specific number of households with internet access. However, we were able to find the percentage of households with internet access in 2020, and the number of households in 2020. We therefore used these two figures to calculate the number of households in the UK with internet access to 2020.

For all the countries, we could not find the percentage of households with internet access and connected devices. We therefore provided the percentage of households with a variety of internet-capable devices, as publicly available.

We used the most recent data available for all countries.
