We started our research by looking for resources which directly and credibly provided the market size of the customs industry globally. In attempting to locate this answer, we conducted exhaustive research through industry-related portals and databases. In pursuit of this strategy, we checked websites like WCO and the World Customs Journal. We also checked research firms, market report databases, and financial publications. We then checked consulting websites and financial databases, in addition to media sites that focus on business topics. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the market size of the customs industry globally.

However, from the WCO's annual report for 2018-2019, we learned that the WCO represents 183 customs administrations around the globe that collectively process approximately 98% of world trade. Based on our findings regarding the collection of tax revenue from customs by region, detailed in the customs industry overview above, we used the following calculations to determine the market size for the global customs industry.

On average, globally: (12.83+46.18+27.61+31.71+32.07%+36.20+39.10)/7 = 225.7/7 = 32.24%.
Therefore, customs accounts for nearly 32.24% of the overall taxes collected globally.

Next, we tried to find the value of all taxes collected globally. We found that tax revenue is represented as a percentage of GDP (Gross World Product).

We then calculated the customs industry market size for 2018 and 2019 using a reverse CAGR calculator. Additionally, we calculated the projected market size for 2020 and 2021.

The World Bank Group ranked Mexico 51 places behind Germany in the annual global Logistics Performance Index, which included the efficiency of the country's customs department. In comparison to the United States, Mexico's customs department scored 2.77 against 3.78 out 5. A World Customs Journal study put forward recommendations for global key performance indicators (KPIs) for customs officials at points of entry based on existing KPI around the globe. Below, four key characteristics or metrics that define success in the customs industry are discussed in further detail.

We commenced our research by looking for information and statistics on the global border customs industry market and the international global trade market. We were hoping to get related facts and statistics from where we could identify any innovation or trend that is disrupting the industry or will disrupt it in the future. We searched through credible news journals and magazine articles such as The Economist, ScienceMag, BusinessWire, PRNewswire, and trusted media pages such as Forbes, and Investopedia. Furthermore, we also searched for trends disrupting the freight forwarding industry, which is directly related to border customs. We looked for related insights and professional commentary, and similar information regarding recent/possible disruptions. We searched through sources such as Business Insider, Mckinsey, Inbound Logistics, and others. This search attempt provided information related to the global supply chain and steps to reduce supply chain risks. We collated the information we gathered in the course of our research to identify three trends or innovations disrupting or will disrupt the global border custom industry.

Mexico Customs Industry, Current Trends

After an extensive search through regional publications, government websites and databases related to the Mexican border, and industry-specific resources that focus on importing and exporting, details to support 3-5 current trends in border customs or the customs industry in Mexico do not appear to be available in the public domain. However, the research team was able to gather valuable insights about trending increases in the value of imports, as well as a generally reduced wait-time at the border.

  • Information to support at least three key trends in the border customs industry in Mexico was not available.

Why was the information not available?

  • It is likely that information is unavailable because the Mexican government and the relevant customs agencies have not cited any major changes that have impacted them. Also, it appears that the data on Mexican border customs and the Mexican customs industry overall is limited and may be confidential.


We started looking for key trends by first going through regional and local Mexican news on border customs, hoping to find some pre-compiled trends or data which could be used to analyze trends. To do this, we predominantly searched for Spanish-language publications specific to Mexico. Through this method, we determined two current trends, described above. We were also hoping to find data to support assertions we could determine as key trends with a measurable impact, such as current means to minimize the time taken to finish border processing, trends in documents processing, or general customs practices currently in place.

However, there is no available data to support current trends or to justify that our findings of an increased value of imports or joint inspections are "key" or "major" trends. We furthered our search by trying to find any regional or local updates from within the Mexican customs industry that would help us measure the impact of the two trends discussed above, but our Spanish-language search provided no useful metrics to determine the overall impact of these changes. The information we did find predominantly focused on migration trends across the Mexican border.

Moving from local or regional news articles, we then checked for publicly available data possible key trends in official websites related to Mexican customs and border operations, such as the Mexican Consulate, data on US-Mexico customs relations, the US Embassy, and other government portals, hoping to find statistics on trending increases or decreases of border tariffs, customs duty, or other trade exchanges. However, these portals provide information specific to travelers, such as what can be brought in or out of Mexico, border check regulations, advice, and frequently asked questions. We considered this approach because according to our previous findings, US and Mexico customs and border patrol have begun joint inspections as a means of reducing wait-time at the border, which suggests improving relations between US and Mexican officials at the border.

We then checked for industry-specific data on imports and exports through associations like the Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United Mexican States (CONCAMIN), the National Chamber of Commerce of the City of Mexico, the Mexican Business Council of Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology, and the National Association of Importers and Exporters, among others. We used this avenue to find out if any trends related to the border customs industry have been published by these associations and government bodies. We were looking for reports or published articles that discuss trends relevant to the customs industry, such as customs processing being too stringent at the Mexican border which could have been used to further check the consequences of any ongoing changes. Given that, we could then determine if any of those changes are currently trending. However, these portals covered info like general tariffs, custom duty tariffs, and general regulations, but do not provide data that would be relevant enough to support trends in Mexican border customs, or the Mexican customs industry overall. We considered this approach as these associations often regularly update import and export data for the US-Mexico border.

The top three key players identified in the border customs industry globally were UPS, JSI Logistics, and Flexport. Below is an overview of the findings.

  • As the world's largest customs brokers, UPS' key objective is integrating blockchain in its brokerage strategy by digitizing transactions, improving transaction accuracy, replacing "paper-heavy, manual processes," and improving the "security and efficiency for shippers going through customs brokerage."

  • Some of UPS's relevant services include electronic and routine customs clearance, handling the complexities and assuring the rating of duties and taxes are accurate, and monitoring the shipment with its advanced online tracking application.

#2: JSI Logistics

To determine the key players in the border customs industry globally, we started our search by reviewing the websites of global associations or registered bodies for companies operating in the border customs industry globally. These sites provided reports from the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the International Federation of Custom Broker Association, among others. While the WCO published a report on the overall industry, it did not provide information on any individual player in the industry. The report from the International Federation of Custom Broker Association provided partial information on the organizations involved in the customs brokerage industry in several countries but did not present a full picture as it covered only 26 countries.

Next, we searched for market reports on the industry from sources such as Reuters, Markets and Markets, Market Research, among others. These sources, however, only provided reports on segments of the total industry. For example, Reuters only provided information on the Automated Border Control Market and although it provided key players in this market, it did not mention any of the metrics of measurement.

As we were searching for services done by custom brokers, we also looked for market reports or industry reports pertaining to this area but this information was not available in sources such as Technavio, GM Insights, Market Research. We also looked into consultancy reports on customs brokerage and the industry as a whole from reputed sources (such as Deloitte, McKinsey, PWC, BCG). However, though some reports, especially one by Deloitte, shed light on the industry overall, there was hardly any information relating to players in the field.

Since the request also regards innovation and disruption by the key players we looked into sources such as TechCrunch, ZD Net, CNBC Disruptor 50 list. These sources provided important insights relating to some custom brokerage companies and their innovation and disruption.

As we could not compile a comprehensive list of key players from the sources mentioned above, we looked into individual companies. We looked into major companies providing custom brokerage solutions globally. Some companies we found included DHL, FedEx, UPS, JSI, Flexport, Blujay, and OIA Global. From our research, we found that the most important criteria for clients of customs brokerage companies, which were into international trade, was global coverage. As many custom brokerage companies were private and did not disclose financial information and many did not publish the exact number of clients served but focused on transactions or shipments handled (which were larger than the number of clients), data on their coverage was found to be the most consistent parameter with which we could rank all the companies along the same scale. We found that DHL covered 220 countries, FedEx covered 220 countries, UPS covered 200 countries, JSI Logistics covered 188 countries, Flexport covered 110 countries, Blujay covered 100 countries, and OIA Global covered 75 countries. Each of these companies was checked in detail for their innovative or disruptive capabilities and only three of them UPS, JSI Logistics, and Flexport were found to have distinct innovative or disruptive features. Finally, we ranked these three companies according to their coverage network and presented our findings above.
