CDC Guidelines - Deep Cleaning/Sanitizing: COVID-19

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting places and surfaces that may have been contaminated by the coronavirus, including community facilities, households, and vehicles. For hard surfaces, the CDC recommends that they should be cleaned with soap or detergent before using a disinfectant. The key points of the CDC guidelines have been provided below.

General Guidelines

  • For facilities where people do not stay overnight, the CDC advises that all areas visited by a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 be immediately closed off. Furthermore, the doors and windows of the cordoned-off areas should be left open for at least 24 hours, while using ventilating fans to improve the air circulation in the area. If 24 hours is not feasible, the CDC recommends waiting as long as possible.
  • The above recommendation also applies to facilities where people are housed overnight, with the addition of working together with "state and local health officials to isolate ill persons and provide temporary housing as needed" as stipulated in this resource.
  • The CDC surmises that if it has been more than seven days since the infected person visited the facilities, then there is no need to perform additional cleaning and disinfection.
  • The recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces across hard, soft, and electronics surfaces as well as linens and clothing are the same across the board — community facilities, households, and vehicles.
  • A list of disinfectants for use against coronavirus as approved by the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) can be found here.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Hard Surfaces

  • Before disinfecting hard surfaces, the CDC recommends that dirty hard surfaces should be cleaned with detergent or soap.
  • After cleaning and drying the hard surface as described above, any of the EPA-registered household disinfectants should then be used on the surface following the product's instructions. Typically, depending on the product, each disinfectant should be left on the surface for some minutes before wiping them off.
  • Diluted bleach solutions can also be used in place of the disinfectants, provided that they have not expired and contain a minimum of 1000ppm sodium hypochlorite. Furthermore, the diluted bleach should be left on the surface for at least one minute. The recommended mix of bleach solution includes "5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water" or "4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water."

Soft Surfaces

  • The CDC recommends that soft surfaces like rugs, drapes, and carpets should be cleaned with the regular cleaners appropriate for such surfaces after removing "visible contaminations" from the surface.
  • Additionally, soft surfaces that can be laundered should be laundered according to the manufacturer's instructions. The CDC, however, notes that the materials be laundered at the warmest temperature possible for the material. The material should then be dried completely.
  • In the absence of the aforementioned, EPA-approved disinfectants that are compatible with the said surface would suffice in cleaning and disinfecting the surface, provided the instructions on the disinfectants are followed.

Electronics

  • According to the CDC, the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and disinfecting each product should be followed.
  • In the absence of a guide by the manufacturers, alcohol-based wipes or sprays with at least 70% alcohol can be used.

Linens and Clothing

  • The CDC recommends that dirty laundry from confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infected persons be laundered according to the manufacturer's instructions, while ensuring not to shake the dirty laundry to avoid the possibility of dispersing the virus through the air.
  • The items should also be washed at the warmest water temperature applicable to the material. The materials should be dried completely after washing.
  • Carts and hampers used to transport dirty laundry should be cleaned and disinfected according to the guidelines stipulated for hard and soft surfaces.
  • Persons handling the dirty laundry should wear disposable gloves and dispose of them properly when done, after which they must wash their hands.
