RESEARCH STRATEGY

We started our research by examining W.W. Grainger's website. We hoped to find details about the company's competitors but our efforts were fruitless. We looked into company databases like OpenCorporates, Craft, CSI Market, Owler and other similar sites. Our goal was to find a list of known competitors of W. W. Grainger and if they offered similar products but do not have the ability to purchase online on their websites. However, we did not find any competitors that fit both the criteria — offering similar products like W. W. Grainger and without the E-Commerce website. While we hoped to find competitors with this method, it ultimately didn't yield any useful results.

We, therefore, scanned industry publications such as SourceToday, Modern Distribution Management (MDM), and Industrial Distribution. We were able to find a list of Top 40 Industrial Distributors from MDM and Big 50 List from Industrial Distribution. W. W. Grainger was ranked first in both the lists in 2018. We then checked the official website of the competitors listed to see if they offer similar products and possess no e-commerce website. Through this search attempt, we identified five competitors of W.W. GraingerTargray, Ewie Group, Essendant, Endries International Inc, and Mahar Tool Supply. Details about the companies' locations and products being offered were obtained from their official websites. We presented the data in rows 10-14 of the provided spreadsheet, column A to E.

YOUR RESEARCH TEAM APPLIED THE FOLLOWING STRATEGY:

We commenced our research by examining W.W. Grainger's website. We specifically looked into 'Investor Relations' page and the annual reports where details about a company's competitors are typically revealed. However, we did not find any major company competitors mentioned by W. W. Grainger on their annual reports. They only mentioned a broad statement about large competitors.

Subsequently, we scanned company databases such as Owler, Craft, CSI Market, and other similar sites. Our goal was to find a list of known competitors of W. W. Grainger and check whether they offer similar products and does not have any E-Commerce websites. However, we did not find any competitors that fit both the criteria — offering similar products like W. W. Grainger and without E-Commerce website.

Following this, we looked into industry publications such as Modern Distribution Management (MDM), SourceToday, and Industrial Distribution. Grainger — MRC Global, Edgen Murray, Wolseley Industrial Group, United Distribution Group, and DXP Enterprises. RESEARCH STRATEGY:

We initially identified W.W. Grainger’s/Gamut’s competitors using industry websites. Crunchbase identified three companies as a competition, but we were not able to use them since all three had e-commerce websites. Owler identified 11 companies as competition, but only Royal Wholesale Electric did not have an e-commerce website. The site showed product selection, but customers had to call the customer service to place an order. Craft.co also listed Genuine Parts Company (GPC) and Distribution Now as competition to Grainger. GPC and Distribution Now provide company information, but customers can not order parts online. SEC filing on Distribution Now and a report on Reuters confirmed Grainger was a competitor with Distribution Now. Also, Hoover's report on Applied Industrial Technologies also confirmed Grainger and Distribution Now as competitors. Therefore, we presented Genuine Parts Company, Royal Wholesale Electric, and Distribution Now as competitors to W.W. Grainger but these companies do not have an e-commerce website.
