Research Strategy

The research team leveraged industry-related articles, reliable media sites, market research sources, and government databases to determine competitors to BJC HealthCare in selected cities based on either the number of beds, employees, or admissions. We thoroughly reviewed, among many others, the following sources: Health Care Council, American Hospital Directory, Cause IQ, Dexur, The Business Journal, Becker's Hospital Review, and more. The most used criteria for ranking health care organizations in the United States, including the select cities, in multiple sources, was based on the number of employees. Since BJC HealthCare has more than 3000 employees, we searched for health care organizations of similar size. We adopted the set specifications for classifying businesses to define employees size. For example, a business with 0-100 employees is considered a small-sized business; 100-999 is a medium-sized business; over 1000 employees is a large enterprise. Since BJC Healthcare, Saint Louis, has about 3600 employees, it qualifies as a large enterprise. Therefore, all similar organizations must be large and have employees within that range. We aimed for large health care organizations in each selected city with the number of employees nearing the 3600 mark or reasonably above it, as was publicly available. The Cause IQ database allowed us to rank health care organizations in each city by the number of employees. To determine their staff retention and recruitment efforts, the team thoroughly reviewed the organizations' official websites, press publications, and third-party related sites, i.e., review sites like Zippia. Unfortunately, none of the health care companies disclosed this information. Still, we attempted to provide helpful insights in relation, as available. Lastly, we also provided reviews of the public conversations regarding employment on leading job site platforms.
