How many companies are there in Australia with over 200 employees - please list them?

Hello and thanks for your question on the number of companies in Australia with over 200 employees and an accompanying list. In short, there are 3,717 companies in Australia that have over 200 employees and you can find a sample of these companies according to the parameters you requested here.

METHODOLOGY
To answer your question, I looked at government statistics for the actual number of companies with 200 employees and more. I also looked for any pre-compiled lists with the same criteria in order to provide the requested list. I found a fairly comprehensive list on the leading 500 private companies in Australia from which I drew out a selection of private companies that fall under the criteria of 200+ employees. I also looked at the Australia Stock Exchange in order to provide a sample list of publicly listed companies with over 200 employees.

NUMBER OF COMPANIES IN AUSTRALIA WITH OVER 200 EMPLOYEES
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as at 2015, of the 2,121,235 companies in the country, 3,717 have over 200 employees. This is an increase from 3,603 companies and 3,598 in 2014 and 2013, respectively. This means that this business type makes up 0.18% (3717/2121235 x 100) of the businesses in Australia. The ABS does not however give a breakdown of which of these companies is public or private.

LIST OF COMPANIES IN AUSTRALIA WITH OVER 200 EMPLOYEES
In order to provide a list of the companies in Australia with over 200 employees, I first looked at pre-compiled data with the same criteria you have requested. Although I could not find such pre-compiled and accessible data, I was able to find the 2016 edition of the Top 500 Private Companies in Australia, which provides both revenue and employee information for each company. I went through company 1-137 in the list and selected a list of 100 companies that have employee numbers of above 200. This list is provided, ranked in order of revenue, in tab 1 of the spreadsheet.

To offer a balance, I also searched for pre-compiled data on publicly listed companies within the same criteria. Except for the actual list of the listed companies in the Australia Stock Exchange (ASX), I was not able to find a revenue and employee pre-populated list for listed companies that was readily accessible. I therefore used the companies in the ASX 20 to begin a list for the publicly listed companies and went through their annual reports or public sites such as Owler and IBISWorld to find the requested information. The list of 19 publicly listed companies that meet your criteria can be found in tab 2, here, ranked in alphabetical order .

Of note in the public companies list is the fact that Westfield Corporation which is part of the ASX 20 is not included. This is because after the restructure of the Westfield Group in 2014, the Westfield Corporation only operates in the U.S. and the U.K. I also endeavoured to provide Australian-specific revenue for companies that have a global presence and where this information was readily available as is the case for: Macquarie Group Ltd, National Australia Bank Ltd. (NAB), QBE Insurance Ltd, Rio Tinto Ltd, Westpac Banking Corporation, and Woolworths Ltd. The revenue is presented in Australian dollars as was provided in the source documents, or converted from US$ to AU$ where it was originally presented in the former. In most companies with a presence beyond Australia, there was no clear demarcation of the number of employees in Australia or elsewhere. However, the ASX 20 is made up of the largest companies in Australia by market capitalization and these companies have headquarters in the country; hence it is reasonable to assume that a large part of the staff is based in Australia.
