How much coffee is shipped globally (in MT or TEU) by region and who are the largest coffee shippers/traders in each region? Regions defined as continents or country (if possible).

OVERVIEW

The ten major coffee exporting countries mostly fall in Latin American and Asian countries. The top 3 countries each exported at least 800,000 MT in 2017, which equals to 13 million bags on the small side of the scale. The largest coffee shipper in 7 of the ten countries was also located, along with a map of coffee exports across the world.

METHODOLOGY

Due to our 3-hour time constraint on research, we focused on the top 10 coffee export countries, companies within those countries and a map of the world coffee trade. There was a compiled list of exporting countries, but there was not a compiled list of shippers which requires a more extensive web search to locate. The major shipper in several of the countries is listed. We were unfortunately not able to find more than basic information due to our time constraints, but the information we were able to find is listed below in our deep dive.

TOP COFFEE EXPORTING COUNTRIES

The top 10 coffee exporting countries with the latest 2017 data are listed below. They are first listed by the number of bags exported and then by the MT that those bags are, which was calculated by using an online calculator. Each bag weighs 60kg, and the number of bags was multiplied by the 60kgs which gave the number that was input into the online calculator to determine the MT.
1. Brazil - 31,579,000 bags or 1894740MT (31,579,000*60 = 1894740000kg =1894740MT )
2. Vietnam 24,755,000 bags or 1,485,300 MT
3. Colombia 13,488,000 bags or 809,280 MT
4. Indonesia 11,098,000 bags or 665,880 MT
5. Honduras 7,290, 000 bags or 437,400 MT
6. India 6,371, 000 bags or 382,260 MT
7. Uganda 4, 605,000 bags or 276,300 MT
8. Peru 3,848,000 bags or 230,880 MT
9. Ethiopia 3,497,000 bags or 209,820 MT
10. Guatemala 3,270,000 bags or 196,200 MT
Since October 2016 coffee export has increased across the world 4.8% from 116.89 million bags to 122.45 million bags. Also, many sources list coffee exports by the value of the export rather than by the quantity exported. The source from World's Top Exports shows the top 15 countries for coffee exports in 2016 by the value of the coffee exported.

TRADE MAPS

We located two different trade maps regarding the coffee export business. The first map from the International Coffee Organization has pins on a map that you can click to see an infographic for coffee in that country. The infographic has everything from coffee exported to coffee consumed in the country. The second map has a table, graph and a map attached. The map is set to the value of the coffee exported in US dollars by country starting from the highest overall value and going to the lowest. You can also change this map to quantity where the values drop down is located, and this will give the quantity in tons.

-Coffee trade focusing on specific countries or continents and finding the relevant traders in those areas
-Creating a spreadsheet of countries and the coffee they export by quantity and type of coffee
-Creating a spreadsheet to compare traders in one country or across multiple countries based on quantity, type of coffee, or any other metric you are interested in
