Changes in Technical Maintenance Workforces- Leaders

The three companies in the US that are changing the technical maintenance workforce include Boride Engineered Abrasives, Sonoco, and Versatech.

1. BORIDE ENGINEERED ABRASIVES

Company Overview

  • Boride Engineered Abrasives is developing and manufacturing abrasive products for industrial and consumer applications in the US for the past 50 years.

Changes in the Workforce

  • The preventive maintenance workforce of Boride needed to create their stringent maintenance schedules because of the manufacturing environment of abrasives company. Hence, they implemented an accurate and streamlined way of reporting about their preventive maintenance and buildings maintenance workforce by using the latest technology DOS-based PMC systems.

How are the Changes Impacting the Workforce

  • The technical maintenance team of the company has undergone training on the DOS to the Windows version of reporting through PMC systems. Boride preventive maintenance workforce is making use of PMC 500% more than earlier and an advanced version of Windows for reporting and adjusting the schedules very easily using the scheduling module.
  • This has lead to better coordination within the departments to keep track of critical information, using more transparent reporting systems for preventive maintenance workforce reshuffles based on requirements, justify additional resources, and save run-time.

Success

  • The company is able to take less time (around 30 seconds of reshuffling) to adjust preventive maintenance workforce schedules by incorporating the manufacturers’ recommendations by reducing the timetables by 25% to 50%. Also, the PMC has cut the amount of time over the card system by 40%.

2. SONOCO

Company Overview

  • Sonoco is an award-winning and one of the world’s largest packaging companies in the US. The Sonoco Flexible Packaging plant in Morristown, TN is a 50,000 square foot facility with around 150 employees that produces packaging for many nationally-known brands. The maintenance department has eight employees, including other plant employees.

Changes in the Workforce

  • The less focus on proactive maintenance was being performed and improvements in availability and efficiency were difficult to achieve by the maintenance workforce due to an unorganized inventory system. Hence, the company decided to implement iMaint Online, a web-hosted enterprise asset management system (EAM) in 30 Sonoco plants along with a new inventory control system.

How are the Changes Impacting the Workforce

  • By the EAM system, the maintenance manager and technicians were able to access their maintenance management system from any computer with a web browser and internet access and get work done directly on their PDAs at the work location with instant updates in the iMaint Online system. They maintain teamwork with online systems and each technician is assigned a Pocket PC wireless-compatible PDAs with integrated barcode scanners.
  • The maintenance workforce is gauging better data and readings for each work order, which to identify repetitive causes through Failure Mode Analysis and maintain an availability rating of at least 98%.

Success

  • The maintenance team is able to remotely perform through wireless work orders using PDAs and achieve improved productivity, efficiency and cost savings, and streamlining work order processes through an inventory control system.

3. VERSATECH

Company Overview

  • Versatech is US-based full-service engineering, manufacturing, and consulting company. The company has also been recognized by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of the fastest-growing local technology solution providers.

Changes in the Workforce

  • The company wanted to improve the ability to impact and improve manufacturing quality, efficiency, and performance of the maintenance team. For the same, they implemented manufacturing analytics technology to be used by all necessary departments (maintenance, engineering, data) across the entire organization to streamline the downtime tracking, resolve issues quickly, recognize negative trends in scrap rates in real-time, and prevent several major 'cost-killers' in team performance.

How are they Impacting the Workforce

  • The engineers at Versatech had to quickly adopt the SensrTrx dashboards and use the manufacturing analytics for estimating and improving down-time and up-time. The manufacturing workforce drove the opportunity for savings and improvements by using the manufacturing analysis for fixing issues as they happened along with leveraging the data reports by focusing on specific problems and help entire business work more efficiently.

Success

  • The manufacturing engineers were able to bring down the overtime and increase the savings. The company noticed an overall boost of 31% in OEE in less than three months of implementation.
