Research Strategy:

To determine the top manufacturers of caulk & sealant products in the United States, we began by researching credible research reports such as Market and Market Research, PRNewswire, Globe Newswire, and other relevant sites listing the top manufacturers of caulk & sealant products in the U.S. We found a 2018 report published by Market Talk News listing the top manufacturers of caulk & sealant products in the U.S. which are DuPont, 3M, C.R. Laurence, CRC, DAP, DuPont, Flex Seal, Gardner-Gibson, GE, Henkel, Hercules, Homax, Krylon, and Loctite. To confirm whether these companies do not major in the manufacturing of adhesive products, we consulted another market research that outlines the top players in the adhesive market. We found that 3M and Henkel are major Adhesive manufacturers, and thus, were excluded from the list. We then proceeded to look for the revenue data of each company in order to select the top 7 by reviewing company databases like CrunchBase, Owler, H&B Hoovers, Craft.co, as well annual reports of the companies. Based on the revenue data, we determined the top 7 manufacturers of caulk & sealant products in the U.S.

Caulks & Sealants Key Players

Although there is no information published regarding the key retailers of caulk and sealant products in the United States, our research team believes that Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Menards, and Lumber Liquidators are the key retailers of caulk and sealant products.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Menards are the top home improvement retailers in the United States by revenue and sell caulk and sealants.
  • Lumber Liquidators is one of the most common retailers of Bostik, a key player in the manufacturer of caulk and sealant products.
  • Lowe's is ranked both highest in revenue of home improvement retailers in the United States and was the most prevalent retailer to sale Bostik, a key player in the manufacturer of caulk and sealant products. From this we can conclude that it is highly probable that Lowe's is the top retailer of caulk and sealant products in the United States.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Our first research strategy was to search for key retailers of caulk and sealant products. Our team scoured the internet for market and industry reports to include major consultancy firms such as Deloitte and McKinsey and industry reports such as Market Watch and Grandview Research. Here, we learned that the key players in the market were 3M, Bostik, Chemence, and the Dow Chemical Company, but the reports did not list key retailers.

As a second strategy our team researched third-party databases, such as Statista and industry publishings such as Stores.org., in search of key retailers. Here, we found that the top retailers in the home improvement industry were Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Menards. We then researched each retailer individually to determine if we could find a breakdown by products sales on their annual reports. Unfortunately, our results were fruitless. We then searched third-party databases such as Statista. Here, we were able to locate product sales by category for both Home Depot and Lowes, but they were both behind a paywall. They can be purchased, here (Lowe's) and here (Home depot)

As a third and final strategy, our research team attempted to find the type of retailers who sold caulk and sealant products in the United States by trying to triangulate which retailers in the United States sold the most inventory from brands from the key market players (3M, Bostik, Chemence, and the Dow Chemical Company). We looked at each of the manufacturers’ websites to find a list of key retailers that they recommended. We were unable to find retailers on 3M, Chemence, and the Dow Chemical Company. However, we found a list of retailers provided on Bostik's website. After conducting a sample search, using the 10 most populated US cities, we determined many local retailers sell the products along with Lowe's and Lumber Liquidators. We assumed the companies listed to be the key caulk and sealant retailers in the US as they were recommended by one of the top caulk and sealant manufacturers, thus we added Lumber Liquidators to our list.

It is likely that this information is not publicly available because companies do not typically publish sales data for specific products. Sales are published on annual reports by total revenue, not individualized items.

The U.S. caulk & sealant products analysis

  • In 2008, the size of the U.S. caulk & sealant products market was $3.2 billion.
  • By triangulation, we determined the 2019 size of the U.S. caulk & sealant products market to be about $4.3 billion assuming it maintains a steady annual growth rate of 2.9% from 2008.
  • According to a 2018 survey on caulk & sealant product users in the U.S., five of the most used brands are;

Research Strategy:

To provide the US market size of caulk & sealant products, our first approach was to search for precompiled industry report from credible industry analysis websites such as Markets and Markets, Grands View Research, PRNews Wire, and others. While we found a report by Crystal Market Report on the U.S. market, it was locked behind a paywall. We also found a 2008 source which provides data on the size of the U.S. caulk & sealant products market on Freedonia Group. However, this is an old report and would not represent the current state of the market.

Our next approach was to search for data on the global caulk & sealant products market size. We hoped to determine the size of the U.S. market from the global market if we could also find data on the U.S. market share. We searched on industry reports as mentioned above, however, relevant data points provided by OpenPR were also behind a paywall.

We switched attention to determine the market share of key players in the U.S. caulk & sealant products market. While the report by Freedonia Group presented an extensive list of key players in the U.S. market, an extensive search on publications and annual reports of some key players did not provide their U.S. share in the caulk & sealant products. We hoped to use market share and revenue data to triangulate the size of the market. We only found a Statista publication on a survey on caulk & sealant product users to determine which brands they use the most. However, this survey report does not depict a true representation of the actual market shares of each player. As such, we can not use it to determine the size of the market.

ASSUMPTION: Due to the unavailability of recent data points, we have assumed that the growth rate of the U.S. caulk & sealant products market in 2008 has remained steady up to 2019. According to the report by Freedonia Group, the demand for caulk & sealant products in the U.S. was expected to grow by 2.9% through 2012. If it remains steady to 2019, the current size of the market would be;
  • 2008 — $3,200,000,000
  • 2009 – 3,200,000,000 + (3,200,000,000*2.9) = 3,292,800,000
  • 2010 – 3,292,800,000 + (3,292,800,000*2.9) = 3,292,800,000
  • 2011 – 3,292,800,000 + (3,292,800,000*2.9) = 3,388,291,200
  • 2012 – 3,388,291,200 + (3,388,291,200*2.9) = 3,486,551,644.8
  • 2013 – 3,486,551,644.8 + (3,486,551,644.8*2.9) = 3,587,661,642.5
  • 2014 – 3,587,661,642.5 + (3,587,661,642.5*2.9) = 3,691,703,830.1
  • 2015 – 3,691,703,830.1 + (3,691,703,830.1*2.9) = 3,798,763,241.2
  • 2016 – 3,798,763,241.2 + (3,798,763,241.2*2.9) = 3,908,927,375.2
  • 2017 – 3,908,927,375.2 + (3,908,927,375.2*2.9) = 4,022,286,269.1
  • 2018 – 4,022,286,269.1 + (4,022,286,269.1*2.9) = 4,138,932,570.9
  • 2019 – 4,138,932,570.9 + (4,138,932,570.9*2.9) = 4,258,961,615.4
