Canned and Bottled Wine

In 2019, we estimate that glass bottled and canned wine sales accounted for 29.1% and 7.39% of sales respectively. In addition, three manufacturers of glass bottles and cans for wine include Berlin Packaging, Brick Packaging, and Global Package, LLC and CanSource, Ball Packaging, and Somec Containers, respectively. Details of our findings have been provided below.

Wine Sales

  • In 2019 there were a total of 10 million units of wine sold in North America.
  • Using the data found below, we estimate that glass bottled wine accounted for 29.1% of sales in 2019 (2.91 million/10million=0.291)
  • Additionally, we estimate that canned wine accounted for 7.39% of sales in 2019 (739,000/10 million=0.0739)

Glass Bottle Wine

  • In 2017, there was a total of 28 billion glass bottles and jars produced in North America with 8% of that being produced for the wine segment. We can estimate that there was a total of 2.24 million glass bottles produced that year for wine in North America (28 billion*0.08=2.24 million).
  • In 2018, glass bottled wine generated $4.3 billion USD.
  • With a growth of 14% YoY predicted between 2017 and 2022, we can estimate that there were 2.91 million glass bottles sold in 2019 (2.24*1.14=2.55; 2.55*1.14=2.91).

Canned Wine

  • In 2019, There were 739,000 cases of canned wine sold in North America.
  • In 2019, there were 900 different canned-wine options in the market.
  • In 2018, canned wine generated $93 million USD.
  • In the can segment, consumers prefer the following options: "43% of those surveyed prefer 250-milliliter cans, 36% the 187-milliliter can and 21% the 375-milliliter can. Half the 375 producers of wine in such containers that Williams tracks use the 250-milliliter can, 8% the 187 and 42% the half-bottle-sized can."
