Canadian Tabletop: Dinnerware Market Size

The dinnerware segment of the tabletop market in Canada is worth CAD 678.5 million.

DINNERWARE SEGMENT IN CANADA

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

According to market reports, the tableware market globally is worth $8.3 billion.

Another market share shows the geographic spread of market data in a pie chart, showing that Canada is occupying approximately 8.3% of the market. We calculated this as follows:
  • We used a protractor to measure the black shading on the geographic market chart for the global tableware market. The full math calculation using a protractor we used can be seen here.
If the Canadian tableware market represents 8.3% of the global market, we can calculate Canadian share as follows:
  • 0.08333 x $8.3 billion = $0.691 billion
  • The Canadian tableware market is estimated to be $691 million.
The third step is to calculate the dinnerware subsegment, which corresponds to 74% of the total tableware market in North America:
  • 0.74 x $691 million = $511.6 million
Finally, the research criteria asked for the market size to be in Canadian Dollars:
  • According to the current exchange rate, 1 USD = 1.32614 CAD
  • $511.6 million x 1.32614 = CAD 678.5 million
  • The dinnerware segment of the tabletop market in Canada is worth CAD 678.5 million.

Canadian Tabletop: Cutlery Market Size

Although the information on the market size for the cutlery segment of the tabletop markets in Canada was unavailable, available data determined that the United States cutlery segment would be worth approximately between US$3 billion and US$3.5 billion in 2019. Below is an explanation of our methodology as well as an overview of our useful findings.
  • The cutlery segment of the tabletop markets in the United States would be worth approximately between US$3 billion and US$3.5 billion in 2019. (triangulated)
  • The Cutlery and Hand Tool Manufacturing segment for the Canadian SMEs is worth about C$184,691,200. (triangulated)
  • The Canadian Cutlery and Hand Tool Manufacturing segment accounted for about C$846.5 million and C$2.2 billion in 2017 in exports and imports, respectively.
  • According to Statista, the retail sales of kitchenware, tableware, bakeware, and cookware in Canada was about C$3 billion in 2018. (calculated)
  • The hand tool and cutlery industry in Canada grew at a CAGR of about 2.1% between 2014 and 2019.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To provide the market size of the cutlery segment of the tabletop markets in Canada, we began our research by searching through Canadian government information sites such as Statistics Canada, Open Data, and Government of Canada. We also scoured through resources providing Canadian industry/market data/statistics such as Info Entrepreneurs as well as for any data availed from research by financial institutions including BDC Canada. Our initial research produced data that enabled us to triangulate the market size of the "Cutlery and Hand Tool Manufacturing" segment for the Canadian SMEs as C$601,600 (average revenue) X 307 (SMEs) = C$184,691,200. While this was helpful data, it did not address the entirety of the request since it only focused on SMEs, as opposed to the entire market, and was inclusive of revenue generated from the hand tool sub-segment which comprises agricultural, carpentry, and cooking appliances/tools, among others.

Next, we explored Canadian news outlets such as CBC News, CTV News, and MSN. We also explored Canadian business-focused magazines such as the Canadian Business Journal and Business Chief. Our research also extended to Canada-based market research firms including Canada Market Research as well as international market research and statistics resources such as IBISWorld and Statista, respectively. From our second strategy, we managed to find a Statista report detailing the retail sales of kitchenware, tableware, bakeware, and cookware in Canada in 2018 as approximately C$3 billion (C$592 million, C$660 million, C$746 million, and C$1.02 billion for the four consecutive quarters), but there was no further breakdown that would enable us to determine the sales of tableware goods and that of cutlery.

Third, we took a different approach and instead searched for global data to establish Canada's position (market share) which would enable us to calculate its market size. We searched for the global market size of the cutlery market through international financial resources such as Forbes, press releases sites such as PRNewswire, and market research resources such as MarketsandMarkets, among others. However, on top of most reports being behind paywalls, it was not possible to find the market share of the Canadian market.

Our fourth strategy was to find the U.S. market size for the cutlery segment of the tabletop markets and use it as a proxy for the Canadian market. Our research entailed using all the aforementioned strategies. We were able to find two reports that enabled us to determine the approximate market size in the United States as follows:

Report 1:

The U.S. hand tool, flatware, and cutlery had an annual revenue of about US$10 billion in 2019 with cutlery (e.g. knives) and flatware (e.g. spoons) accounting for about 35%. Therefore, the approximate revenue generated by the cutlery market would be: 35% X US$10,000,000,000 = US$3,500,000,000

Report 2:

A report by IBISWorld states that the U.S. hand tools market was worth about US$7 billion. Based on the first report that placed the U.S. hand tool, flatware, and cutlery had an annual revenue of about US$10 billion, the cutlery market would be worth about = US$10,000,000,000US$7,000,000,000 = US$3,000,000,000.

Canadian Tabletop: Table Linens Market Size

In 2018, the Canadian table linens market size was estimated to value at CAD 731.69 million; while the market size of the US table linens industry was found to be CAD 3.16 billion. Alternatively, North America generated about 34.5% of the global revenue and was valued at CAD 4.38 billion in 2018.

US AND NORTH AMERICAN MARKET

  • According to a recent report by Grand View Research, the North American table linen market comprised about 34.5% of the global industry revenue with a market share of CAD 4.38 billion ($3.31 billion) in 2018.
  • In 2018, the US table linen market was estimated to generate a revenue of CAD 3.16 billion ($2.39 billion), registering a CAGR of 9.71% between 2015 and 2018 (CAD 2.39 billion vs. CAD 3.16 billion).
  • Hence, the revenue generated by the rest of North America was about CAD 1.22 billion ($920 million).
  • The US table linen market comprised about 43.85% of cotton, 25% of artificial fiber, 17.85% of linen silk, and 21.42% of other fibers.

CANADA TABLE LINEN MARKET SIZE

  • According to a recent report by Market Intellica, the global linen cloth market comprises nearly 35% of table linen, 18% of kitchen linen, 20% of bed linen, and about 27% of other linen cloths such as garments and curtains.
  • In 2018, the Canadian kitchen linen market was estimated to generate a revenue of CAD 376.30 million ($284.29 million).
  • Hence, the Canadian table linen industry was calculated to be about CAD 731.69 million in 2018.

GLOBAL MARKET INSIGHTS

  • In 2018, the global market size of table linen was CAD 12.72 billion ($9.6 billion). Additionally, about 45.83% (CAD 5.82 billion) of the industry revenue was generated from the sales in hypermarkets and supermarkets.
  • The revenue contribution from the residential segment stood at CAD 9 billion ($6.8 billion) or about 70.83% of the total industry revenue.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We started the research by trying to identify any precompiled market research reports that can help us determine the market size of table linens in Canada. We scoured through numerous market research reports that focused on table linens market globally. We referred to credible reports from Market Watch, Hexa Research, 360 Research Reports, IndexBox, Market Intellica, IbisWorld, among others. We could not find any publication that featured the market size of table linens in Canada. Alternatively, we came across a recent report by Grand View Research, highlighting the total market size of table linens in the US and North America. Though this report featured the market size of the concerning region, it did not specify any details about the industry in Canada.

Additionally, we found a recent report by Market Intellica, highlighting the global breakdown of linen cloth market by type of application. The report estimated that about 35% of linen cloths are used as table linens, followed by 20% as bed linens, 18% as kitchen linens, and nearly 27% being used for other applications.

Further, we tried searching about the Canadian linen cloth industry on credible industry database sites like Statastics Canada, Export.gov, Statista, and FlexPort. We were unable to fetch any details regarding the table linens market in Canada. Alternatively, Statista projected the market size of kitchen linens in Canada to reach about $295.3 million (CAD 390.75 million) in 2020.

Next, we tried to triangulate the market size of the table linen industry in Canada by calculating the market size of kitchen linens in Canada in 2018 (CAD 376.30 million) and its expected contribution to the entire linen cloth industry in Canada, i.e., about 18%. Thereby, we used the following calculation to determine the market size of Canadian table linen industry.

CALCULATION
  • Market size of the kitchen linen industry in Canada = CAD 376.30 million
  • Market contribution of kitchen linen industry to total linen cloth industry = 18%
  • Market contribution of table linen industry to total linen cloth industry = 35%
  • Hence, market size of table linen industry in Canada = (CAD 376.30 million x 35%) ÷ 18% = CAD 731.69 million.

Canadian Tabletop: Glassware Market Size

The market size for the glassware segment in Canada is approximately $115,468,352.26 in Canadian dollars.

Glassware in Canada

Research Strategy

In our research, we found the global glassware market and the global number of households by country. We then calculated the average spending per household. With the number of households in Canada, we were able to multiply by the average global spend per household to extrapolate the final figure.

Calculations

We began with the figure of the global glassware market of $9,953.89 million as provided by PRNewswire.

We then used a spreadsheet provided by Tekcarta with the number of households per country from 2000 to 2012.
After we totaled each year from 2000 to 2012, we calculated the Global CAGR for households from 2000 to 2012 as 1.3%

Using that CAGR, we extrapolated the number of households from 2013 to 2018.
The number of households globally in 2012, reported in thousands, totaled 1,554,993.
The number of global households for 2013 to 2018, using a 1.3% CAGR, reported in thousands, were 1,575,208; 1,595,686; 1,616,430; 1,637,443; 1,658,730 and 1,680,293 respectively. See attached spreadsheet for calculations.

We used the same methodology to calculate the number of households in Canada from 2013 to 2018, using a CAGR of 1.2%
This calculation gave us the number of households globally in 2017 as roughly 1.658 billion and the number of households in Canada as 14.33 million.

Once we had the number of households for 2017, we were able to divide the total spend on glassware, $9,953.89 million by 1,658,730 thousand households for an average spend per household of $6.09

We then multiplied the total number of Canadian households by $6.09
14,330,000 x $6.09 = $87,277,800 USD

Using today's exchange rate of 1 USD = 1.32CDN, the total spend is estimated at
$87,277,800 X 1.32 = $115,468,352.26 CDN

All calculations are shown, and the formulas can be checked, on this spreadsheet.

Canadian Tabletop: Barware Market Size

Owing to the unavailability of information in the public domain, our research team triangulated the market size of the Canadian home decor barware market. The home decor barware markets in Canada and the United States are valued at $36.7 million and $535.3 million, respectively.

FINDINGS

  • The Canadian retail barware market/ home decor barware market is worth $36.7 million (C$48,87 million).
  • Barware & accessories were stocked by 69% of retailers of home decor in Canada in 2013.
  • The global glass tableware segment comprises three categories: flatware, dinnerware, and beverage ware. The beverage ware segment has the greatest market share among the three segments. Barware is a sub-segment of the beverage ware category.
  • The United States barware market grew from $391.8 million to $535.3 million between 2010 and 2018.
  • Noritake, Corelle, Wedgwood, Corelle, Ikea, Rachael Ray, Williams Sonoma, Cocktail Kingdom, and Schott Zwiesel are the top players in the global barware market.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

In order to fulfill this request, we first looked for research reports on the Canadian barware industry. However, we found no such report except a dated one by TFO Canada, according to which, barware & accessories were stocked by 69% home decor retailer in Canada in 2013. Following this, we looked for research reports specific to the North American and United States markets. Most of the reports we came across, by agencies such as Ameco Research, Grand View Research, Market Research Place, BisReport, and Extense Report, were of global focus and did not contain any Canada or US-specific information. Statistical databases such as Statista, and Statistics Brain did not provide any Canada-focused metrics; however, we were able to find the retail barware spend in the United States. Next, we looked for Canada-specific drink ware and glassware market reports, hoping to find information pertaining to the beverage ware segment, but that too did not result in any success. Given the above limitations, we triangulated an estimate for the Canadian barware market size.

The size of the barware markets is likely to be proportional to the size of the alcohol & spirits market. The larger the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the greater will be the spend on barware. Therefore, the relative size/ proportion of the barware markets in Canada and the United States is likely to be the same as the relative size of their alcoholic beverage markets. The required metric has been calculated below assuming that the proportion of retail and commercial barware spend in both countries will be the same.

CALCULATIONS

United States
Retail barware sales: $535.3 million
Alcohol sales: $253.8 billion

Canada
Alcohol sales: $17,404,104,655 (C$23,180,438,000)
Therefore, retail barware sales = $17,404,104,655 * $535.3 million / $253.8 billion= $36.7 million (C$48,873,390)

Canadian Tabletop: Serveware Market Size

While there was no information that would enable the calculation of the market size for the serveware segment of the tabletop markets in Canada, the research team used the available data to compile some useful information: the Canadian sales for kitchenware, bakeware, tableware, and cookware was about $3 million in 2018. Below is an explanation of our methodology as well as an overview of our useful findings.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Our research for the market size of the serveware segment of the tabletop markets in Canada began by searching through the public domain for any readily available. This approach focused on sites providing market and business data such as Info Entrepreneurs and Canada Business as well as Canadian news outlets including CTV, CBC, and Toronto Sun. Our initial research also entailed scouring through Canada-based business-oriented magazines such as Business Chief and the Canadian Business Journal. However, there was nothing on the requested information.

Next, we extended our research to Canada-based market research firms including E.R.M.R., CRC Research, and Canada Market Research. The research team also explored international media resources including Forbes and the BBC, international research firms including MarketWatch, UMP, Wise Guy Reports, MarketResearchNest, and IBISWorld, among others. Additionally, we explored statistics sites such as Statista and Euromonitor. While there were several reports on the serveware market by global research firms such as Wise Guy Reports and MarketResearchNest, they were all for the global market and behind paywalls. Statista provided a report detailing the total sales of kitchenware, bakeware, tableware, and cookware in Canada from 2014 to 2018 but did not provide any further breakdowns.

Third, we shifted our focus to the Canadian government official portals and sources of statistical information including GC.ca and Statistics Canada. GC.ca provides a report that details the revenue from Canadian industries and, although, there was some useful information on the "Cutlery and Hand Tool Manufacturing" segment, there was nothing on the serveware segment.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to triangulate the market size for the serveware segment of the tabletop market in Canada because we could not find any information on the revenue/sales/market size, either for Canada or globally. Notably, there were no reports, either free or paywalled, addressing the Canadian serveware market. We also hoped to provide the U.S. figures as a proxy for the missing Canadian data but we could only find a paywalled report by Reports Monitor Market that detailed the market size as well as the growth metrics and the key players. We believe that the information on the serveware market is very scarce because it might be a very small sub-segment within the tabletop segment.

Canadian Tabletop: Cookware Market Size

While there is no information available to fully address the market size for the cookware segment of the tabletop market in Canada, the team used available data to identify that the 2018 US cookware segment market size was $2.05 billion. Additionally, in Canada, the combined retail sales for tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware was CAD 3.02 billion. Below is an outline of the research strategies to better understand why the information requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into the findings.

Helpful Findings

  • The global kitchenware market size was valued at $56.8 billion in 2018 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 4.5% over the forecast period of 2019-2025; primarily driven by the economic growth in emerging countries, rapid urbanization, rising disposable income, changing lifestyles, and an increasing number of households, globally.
  • The cookware segment accounted for the leading share of more than 35.0% in 2018 of the kitchenware market and is expected to witness significant growth in the near future.
  • As per Grandview Research, the US kitchenware market size was $4.9 billion in 2015 and grew to $5.2 billion in 2016, depicting a CAGR of 6.1%. In absence of any current data, assuming the market to grow at the same rate, the 2018 US kitchenware market size was $5.85 billion. Since the cookware segment forms 35% of the same, the US cookware segment market size aggregates to $2.05 billion. (see calculations section below)
  • As per Statista, the quarterly combined retail sales of tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware in Canada were CAD 592.73 million in Q1'18, CAD 660.28 million in Q2'18, CAD 746.82 million in Q3'18 and CAD 1,020.91 million in Q4'18. Thus, the total aggregate sales in 2018 for tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware in Canada were CAD 3.02 billion. (see calculations section below)
  • Some of the major players operating in the cookware market include Boffi, Scavolini S.p.a, Tupperware, Viners, Chasseur, Kenwood Limited, TTK Prestige Ltd., Miele, Whirlpool Corp., and Kitchenaid.
  • The global household cooking appliance market was valued at $80.74 billion in 2018 and is poised to progress at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2019 to 2025 with North America representing a revenue share of over 30.0% in the global market in 2018.
  • According to Zion Market, the global nonstick cookware market accounted for $18.75 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach approximately $25.59 million by 2026, with a CAGR of around 4% between 2019 and 2026. North America is expected to be the largest nonstick cookware market over the estimated time frame, owing to the growing demand for safe, convenient, and user-friendly cookware by the region’s food industry.
  • Some key players operating in the global and American nonstick cookware market are Berndes, Scanpan, Le Creuset, Circulon, Calphalon, Moneta Cookware, Gibson Brands, Farberware Licensing, Anolon, Cuisinart, Tefal, All-Cladd, Neoflam, and TTK Prestige.

Research Strategy:

After an extensive search for information on the market size for the cookware segment within the tabletop market in Canada, the research team was not able to locate the requested details. We did find the overall cookware market in the US, which was supposed to be used as a proxy but this information did not allow for segregation of the tabletop market. Since all cookware would not form part of the tabletop market (for example, some pots and pans might be applicable but not cookers and large cookware), using the overall cookware market size would have been inept. Most of the other information we located revolved around the global market size, growth of kitchen cooking appliances, and non-stick cookware; all of which we have included as part of the helpful findings. The primary reason for the information to be missing is likely due to the industry being extremely fragmented with almost all the players being private companies; therefore, garnering revenues of the various players to determine the market size was not possible. Below is the deep dive into the various strategies that we deployed to locate the information.

The first strategy was to scour through the various research reports (e.g., Market Radar, PR Newswire, Grandview Research, Forrester, Bloomberg, Reuters, etc.) and media reports (e.g., TFO Canada, CandaOne, Forbes, WSJ, Business Insider, Bloomberg, Reuters, Live Mint, etc.) on the market size of the Canadian cookware segment of the tabletop market but no segregated data for cookware could be located. We also searched for the cookware segment of the tabletop market in the US but again the available details were only for the larger cookware segment (and not tabletop specifically).

Our next strategy was to search through the websites, blogs and filings such as annual reports, earning call transcripts, quarterly statements and other supplemental filings for the key players operating in the Canadian and US cookware industry such as Le Creuset Canada, Paderno, Williams Sonoma, Meyer Canada, Tupperware, Kenwood Limited, etc. Normally companies do disclose some information regarding the industry they operate in through their filings, especially annual reports. However, all the information found centered around the products and competencies of the individual companies with no specific market sizing or growth rate information available.

The team's third strategy was to try to triangulate the information by looking at the overall tabletop/tableware industry in Canada or the US and try to find the percentage share of the cookware segment. Using these data points, we could have carved out the market size for the cookware segment of the tabletop markets. However, while we were able to locate information on the size of the cookware segment as part of the kitchenware market, no data on its share in the tabletop market could be located.

We also looked for alternate data points to triangulate the information. We looked for historical data on the cookware segment market size in Canada and the US to attempt to use the industry CAGR growth to triangulate the current market share of the same. While we were able to locate the growth in the global cookware market, there was no information on the historical cookware segment market size in Canada or the US. All the data found, again, was for the global kitchenware and cooking appliances along with the future forecasts. Hence, this strategy could not materialize the exact data points requested.

CALCULATIONS
(1) US kitchenware market size:
- Market Size in 2015: $4.9 billion
- Market Size in 2016: $5.2 billion
- CAGR= (5.2/4.9-1)*100=6.1%
Using the same CAGR, we get the 2018 market size as 5.2*1.061*1.061=$5.85 billion
Share of cookware segment in the overall kitchenware segment=35%
Thus, the US cookware segment market size=5.85*35/100=$2.05 billion

(2) Combined retail sales of tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware in Canada:
-The quarterly combined retail sales of tableware, kitchenware, cookware and bakeware in Canada were CAD 592.73 million in Q1'18, CAD 660.28 million in Q2'18, CAD 746.82 million in Q3'18 and CAD 1,020.91 million in Q4'18.
-Thus, total 2018 sales= 592.73+660.28+746.82+1020.91=CAD 3,020.74 million.

Canadian Tabletop: Small Appliances Market Size

While there is no publicly available information to fully address the small appliance segment of the tabletop market in Canada, there were some details available that may be valuable and add depth to the topic. For instance, key players in the Canadian small appliance market include GE, Hamilton, and Mabe. Below is an outline of the research strategies to better understand why the information requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into the findings.

HELPFUL FINDINGS

  • According to Statista, the revenue for Canadian small appliances amounted to $1.813 billion in 2019.
  • The general small appliances segment consists of vacuum cleaners, small kitchen appliances, hair clippers, irons, toasters, grills, roasters, and hair dryers.
  • The small appliances market in Canada is expected to grow annually by 1.1% (CAGR 2019-2023).
  • Small kitchen appliances consisted of blenders, mixers, food processors, electric juicers, electric deep fryers, waffle irons, and egg cookers, amounting to $1.025 billion in 2019.
  • In addition, the revenue for the toasters segment, alone, in 2019 was $72 million.
  • Bosch, Electrolux, GE, Hamilton, Mabe, Murphy Richards, Panasonic, Phillips, and Samsung are some of the key players in the Canadian small appliance market.

Research Strategy:

We did not find the overall market size for the small appliance segment of the tabletop markets in Canada. However, we have provided a market size for small appliances in Canada as the only available proxy. The research team shared the strategies we used (below) in order to provide understanding as to why we have determined that the data are not available.

The team started by searching through precompiled market research reports that can help us determine the market size of small appliances in Canada. We searched through Market Research, MordorIntelligence, Transparency Market Research, among others. We found a market report that featured the market size of the small appliances segment in Canada but it was behind a paywall. On the other hand, we came across a report for the United States and a global small appliances market report, but these were also behind a paywall. We did not find information on the market size of small tabletop appliances using this strategy.

We proceeded to search through filings such as annual reports, quarterly statements, shareholder financials, etc. for the key players operating in the Canadian and U.S. small appliances market with a goal to find disclosed financial information regarding the industry in which they operate. However, there was no financial information found in this segment. Most of the information found was revenue and sales of overall units sold within the individual companies.

Next, we conducted research about the Canadian small appliances industry on industry database sites like Statistics Canada, Export.gov, and Statista, among others, hoping to get details such as revenue and market data from Canadian industries. However, the market size was not specific to tabletop markets as a whole. Since there were no publicly available reports or data on revenue/sales in the Canadian small appliances market, we could not triangulate the information.

Canadian Tabletop: Coffee & Tea Service Market Size

The size of the Canadian coffee and tea service market could not be found ij the public domain, nor could a specific size be estimated. However, an insightful estimate from the findings of this research is that the size of the Canadian coffee and tea cups, saucers, and mugs market ranges from CA$186.984 million to CA$667.8 million. A detailed account of our findings is below.

USEFUL INSIGHTS

  • Every year, Canadians purchase 14 billion cups of coffee. Thirty-five percent of this amount are single-use cups, that is, those used for selling coffee/tea at cafes and tea shops.
  • Every year, Canadians purchase over 10 billion cups of tea.
  • The average price of tea/coffee saucers, jugs, and mugs range from CA$14 to CA$50.
  • On average, a Canadian consumes 3.2 cups of coffee per day.

ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS

  • In 2018, the US had a market share of 90% in the North American disposable cups market.
  • In 2011, North America had a 15.38% share in the global coffee-cups market. In 2015, North America's share was 16.17%.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Your research team began by consulting industry/market research and report providers to find the size of the Canadian coffee and tea service market. We searched through various market research providers such as MarketsandMarkets, IBISWorld, MarketWatch, Statista, and MordorIntelligence. However, this strategy failed to yield the required results. This strategy was only successful in providing the global market size of disposable cups and coffee cups.
Next, we consulted the websites of some major tableware manufacturers in Canada, such as Pactiv, and Cup Junction, with the hopes of finding insights and data from which we can determine some sales data of the Canadian coffee and tea service market, hence the market size. Unfortunately, this strategy could not yield any useful information regarding the market size, rather, it only provided product listings and data from the individual companies.
Furthermore, we consulted the Coffee Association of Canada, in an attempt to find any related information or insight regarding the buying behaviours of coffee consumers, when it comes to coffee/tea cups, mugs, and saucers, which we could aggregate to provide an answer. However, this strategy failed to provide any useful information as it only provided statistics regarding the coffee consumption in Canada.
In a final attempt to uncover some useful insights, we delved deeper to aggregate various data from credible media mentions regarding the coffee/tea consumption records, studies, and estimates in Canada. Doing so, we were able to find that Canadians purchase 14 billion cups/saucers/mugs of coffee annually. Also, Canadians purchase over 10 billion cups/saucers/mugs of tea annually. Of these quantities of tea and coffee cups, 35% are single-use cups, that is, those used for selling coffee/tea at cafes and tea shops. We also determined that the average price of tea/coffee cups, saucers, and mugs range from CA$14 to CA$50. With these, we were able to provide an insight into the size of the Canadian tea and coffee service market, as detailed below.
CALCULATIONS
First, we determined the total number of coffee/tea cups/saucers/mugs purchased annually by Canadians, that is, 14 billion + 10 billion = 24 billion. Of this quantity, 35% are sold with coffee/tea. That is, the quantity of non single-use cups/mugs = 65% (100% — 35%) of 24 billion, this equates to 0.65 * 24 billion = 15.6 billion cups of coffee/tea.
An average Canadian consumes 3.2 cups/saucers/mugs of coffee per day. In a year, that equates to 3.2 * 365 = 1,168 cups/saucers/mugs per person per year.
To eliminate redundancy, the number of coffee/tea cups per year estimated above (15.6 billion) is divided by the annual consumption per person, assuming each consumer uses a cup/mug/saucer. That is, 15.6 billion/1,168 = 13.356 million different coffee/tea cups/saucers/mugs. To get an insight on the estimated size of the market, then, the figure is multiplied by the price range identified above (CA$14 to CA$50). That is, CA$186.984 million (CA$14 * 13.356 million) to CA$667.8 million (CA$50 * 13.356 million).
