Canadian Home Decor: Market Size

The market size for the home decor sector in Canada for the year 2019 is estimated to be 15.73 billion CAD.

Canadian Home Decor: Market Size

  • The global home decor industry is expected to be valued at around $664.0 billion by 2020, as listed by Allied Market Research.
  • The market is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from the year 2015 to 2020.
  • According to our analysis, the global market size of the home decor industry in 2015 was approximately $540.54 billion.
  • As reported by the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada, the Canadian home decor market size in 2015 was estimated at $10 billion.
  • According to our analysis, the 2019 Canadian home decor market size is 15.73 billion CAD. (triangulation/calculation provided below)

Research Strategy:

After an exhaustive search through the public domain for press releases, news reports, publications, and market reports containing any mention of the Canadian home decor market size in 2019, we were unable to locate relevant data. We then tried to find the Canadian market size for the various segments of the home decor industry so we could sum up the value for the entire industry. Although we were able to find the market size for the home furniture industry in Canada, we were unable to find any information about the home fragrance market in Canada which is a vital member that makes up the home decor industry.

Next, we resorted to finding the North American home decor market size to triangulate the value for Canada from there. Our search yielded a report by Goldstein Research, which opined that the North American home decor market size is projected to reach $11.55 billion by 2024. However, this report could not be trusted as we already established that North America holds the largest share (37.7%) of the global home decor industry market, worth over $600 billion (global market size), and also, a report from Grand View Research stated that the United States (a major shareholder in the North American home decor industry) had a home decor market size of $153.3 billion in 2015. Hence, this renders the piece by Goldstein Research on the North America home decor industry invalid. The rest of the reports we found addressing North America were either about a particular market segment of the industry with incomplete data to aid triangulation of the Canada home decor industry or behind a paywall.

Therefore, we were forced to locate the global home decor industry statistics and attempt to triangulate the value for Canada from it. We could not use the North American market share of the global industry since we were unable to determine the actual market share for Canada.

To do this, we found a report from the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada on the home decor market size in 2015 and another report by Allied Market Research on the global home decor market forecast for 2020, which will undergo a CAGR growth rate of 4.2% from 2015 to 2020. Making an assumption, we were able to perform the below triangulation to arrive at the home decor market size for Canada in 2019.

ASSUMPTION

  • The Canadian share of the global industry for 2015 remains the same in 2019 since the forecast for the global market is from 2015 to 2020, and also, North America holds the largest share in the world.

TRIANGULATION

  • Global home decor market size 2020 = $664.0 billion
  • Market growth CAGR from 2015-2020 = 4.2%
  • Using a CAGR calculator, we calculated that the global home decor market size 2015 = $540,542,050,233.81 ≈ $540.54 billion
  • Global home decor market size 2019 = $637,236,084,452.97 ≈ $637.236 billion
  • Canadian home decor market size in 2015 = $10 billion
  • Percentage of the Canadian market in the 2015 global home decor market size = (10 / 540.54) * 100 = 1.85%
  • Therefore, the Canadian home decor market size 2019 = (0.0185 * $637.236 billion) = $11,788,834,636.96 ≈ $11.79 billion
  • Converting this value to the Canadian dollar using an XE currency converter = 15,726,863,085.96 CAD ≈ 15.73 billion CAD

Canadian Home Decor: Pillows / Throws Market Size

While we were unable to determine the market size for the pillows/throws segment of the home decor market in Canada after an exhaustive search of the public domain, we have provided the market size for this segment in the United States. We have estimated the United States market for slipcovers and decorative pillows at US $625.81 million (calculations below).

UNITED STATES SLIPCOVER AND DECORATIVE PILLOWS

  • According to Statista, the "average annual expenditure on slipcovers and decorative pillows per consumer unit in the United States" in 2014 and 2017 were US $4.21 and US $4.52, respectively (screenshot also available here).
  • Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics also shows that the total number of consumer units in the United States in 2014 and 2017 were 127,006,000 and 130,001,000, respectively.
  • Using the above data points, we were able to estimate that the market size for slipcovers and decorative pillows in the United States in 2014 and 2017 were US $534.69 million and US $587.60 million (calculations below), respectively.
  • Using the market size for 2014 and 2017, we have estimated the 2019 slipcover and decorative pillows segment of the United States home decor industry at US $625.81 million.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We commenced our research into identifying the market size for pillows/throws segment of the home decor market in Canada by searching for market reports into the home decor market in Canada, with the view that these reports typically refer to different segments within the markets they cover. Our findings indicate that market reports on the industry are few and far between. For example, we found an old report by the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada which details the market size of the home decor industry in Canada before 2015. Another report by Statista covered the home furnishing market without a further break down of the different segments of the industry. We further conducted a press search on the subject matter to see if news articles, interviews, and press releases could share details and statistics that could be useful in at the very least triangulating an estimate, but this approach was equally unfruitful.

Our next strategy was to identify the key players in Canada's pillows/throws market, their market share, and revenue; and then use these data points to piggyback on the size of the market. Again, the lack of market reports on the industry proved a stumbling block using this strategy. We also looked at market reports on the global pillows/throws market, but none of the listed key players were from Canada.

Another strategy we explored was to identify the average price of throws/pillows in Canada as well as the total number of same sold per year and use these figures to compute the market size. While we found no articles or reports that mentioned the average price of pillows/throws in Canada, we reckoned that we could estimate this by looking through some retailers and taking an average of their selling price. That said, identifying the number of pillows/throws sold per year proved difficult. We looked through Statistics Canada, but no such data exists in its database. What we found was the average household spending on household furnishing valued at CAD 962 in 2017. We also looked through market reports as well as conducted a press search on the topic, all to no avail.

Lastly, we sought to use the share of the global throw/decorative pillow market against the global home decor market and use this figure as a proxy for the Canadian market with the assumption that the global market share is also applicable in Canada. While the global home decor market size was readily available in the market reports that we found, the size of the global throw/decorative pillow market was redacted in the market reports that we found (here and here). As such, this strategy was not fruitful.

After following the above strategies to no avail, we have provided the United States market size for the pillows/throws segment of the home decor market.

CALCULATIONS

According to Statista, the "average annual expenditure on slipcovers and decorative pillows per consumer unit in the United States" in 2014 and 2017 were US $4.21 and US $4.52, respectively (screenshot also available here). Our research showed that the words throw pillows and decorative pillows are used interchangeably. As such, we have assumed that the two markets are the same.

Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics also shows that the total number of consumer units in the United States in 2014 and 2017 were 127,006,000 and 130,001,000, respectively. Therefore, the total spending on slipcovers and decorative pillows in the United State were:
2014: US $4.21 * 127,006,000 = US $534.69 million
2017: US $4.52 * 130,001,000 = US$587.60 million

We then used an online cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) calculator to calculate the growth rate between 2014 and 2017, which we then used to estimate the United States market size in 2019. Using the online CAGR calculator and inputting the following figures:
  • Growth rate: Unknown variable
  • Initial value (2014 market size): US $534.69 million
  • Final value (2017 market size): US $587.60 million
  • Period (2017-2014): 3
The growth rate was calculated as 3.20%.

Using the same online CAGR calculator, and inputting the variables below:

  • Growth rate: 3.20%
  • Initial value (2017 market size): US $587.60 million
  • Final value (2019 market size): Unknown variable
  • Period (2019-2017): 2

  • The 2019 market size was calculated as US $625.81 million.

Canadian Home Decor: Home Accents Market Size

While we were unable to determine the market size for the home accents segment of the home decor market in Canada after a thorough and wide-reaching search of the public domain, we have provided the market size for this segment in the United States. The market size of the US home accents segment was $22.27 billion in 2016.

US HOME DECORATIVE ACCENTS MARKET SIZE

    • The market size of the US home accents segment was $22.27 billion (35% of the total market) as of 2016.

    • The United States home decor market size was about $64.75 billion in 2016, experiencing a 2.3% growth from 2015.

OVERVIEW OF THE CANADIAN HOME DECOR/HOME ACCENTS SEGMENT

    • The Canadian home decor market was 10 billion CAD in 2015.
    • Home accents segment which includes wooden statues/ornaments, artificial flowers/fruits, and other types of statues/ornaments such as flower vases accounted for 5% (150.846 million CAD) of the total imports in 2015.
    • Wooden statues/ornaments, artificial flowers/fruits, and other statues/ornaments accounted 70 million CAD, 52 million CAD, and 26 million CAD respectively.
    • Canadian imports of home decor was 2.9 billion CAD in 2015

    RESEARCH STRATEGY

To provide the requested information regarding home accents segment size of the Canadian home decor market your research team commenced by identifying the market size for home accents segment of the home decor market in Canada by searching for market reports into the home decor market in Canada, with the view that these reports typically refer to different segments within the markets they cover. Our findings revealed that market reports on the industry are few and far between. For example, we found a report by the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO) Canada which details the market size of the home decor industry and the home accents share in the import sector in the market in Canada as of 2015. Another report by Statista covered the home furnishing market without a further break down of the different segments of the industry. We further conducted a press search on the subject matter to see if news articles, interviews, and press releases could share details and statistics that could be useful in at the very least triangulating an estimate, but this approach was unfruitful due to the non-availability of market information on the home accents segment.

Our next strategy was to identify the key players in Canada's home accents market, their market share, and revenue; and then use these data points to triangulate the size of the market. After a thorough search through multiple sources provided no useful information regarding these players, the lack of information regarding the industry players proved a stumbling block using this strategy.

We also scour through media source, market reports, and price listing sites to identify the average price of home accents in Canada as well as the total number of same sold per year and use these figures to compute the market size. While we found no articles or reports that mentioned the average price of home accent in Canada, we reckoned that we could estimate this by looking through some retailers and taking an average of their selling price. That said, identifying the number of home accents sold per year proved difficult. We looked through Statistics Canada, but no such data exists in its database.

We then sought to use the share of the global home accents market against the global home decor market and use this figure as a proxy for the Canadian market with the assumption that the global market share is also applicable in Canada. While the global home decor market size was readily available in the market reports that we found, the size of the global home accents segment was redacted in the market reports. Hence, could not proceed with this strategy.

While thorough and wide-reaching search strategies could not be leveraged to provide the Canadian home accents market size, we have provided the United States market size for the home accents segment of the home decor market.

Note: All values regarding the Canadian market are presented in CAD while the US market values are reported in USD. However, the exchange rate of the USD to CAD is 1 USD to 1.32 CAD, according to Google currency converter.

    RESEARCH STRATEGY

During our research, there was limited information about the market size of the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada, with most of the available information focused on the global wall decor market. We tried several approaches like locating pre-compiled information via press releases, media coverages or interviews from different industry experts discussing the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada and triangulating using the segments and key players of the industry. Since there was limited information on the Canadian market, we opted to use the US market as a proxy to the Canadian market. We were, therefore, able to provide information on the US wall decor industry as a proxy word to estimate the market size for the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada. Below are the details.

We began our research by looking for pre-compiled information on the market size for the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada via articles, news reports in sources such as Statista, BusinessWire, and Euromonitor. We expected to find this information via these sources since they usually publish reports on markets. While there were reports on the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada, details were hidden behind paywalls.

Next, we tried searching for information on Canadian home decor manufacturers who also offer wall decor products, home decor design, and interior design. The idea was to pull out some industry insights, outlook, views, and analysis from industry experts in Canada from their media interviews, newspaper columns, publications, blog posts, or magazines, which could then be used as data points to analyze the performance (e.g., sales & market standing) of wall decors in Canada, or calculate their estimates. However, this approach was unfruitful as we could not locate any information on the Canadian market. We could only find insights into how the wall decor segment will experience growth in the global industry.

Lastly, we tried to triangulate the required information using available data on the global wall decor market, specifically the key market players in the industry. The idea was to get the Canadian market players. We learned that global market players like Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, IKEA, Lowes, Target, and Art.com, among others, are all in the wall decor industry in Canada. Therefore, we tried to estimate the size of wall decor market in Canada by adding up the revenues of these market players. However, after searching through their annual reports, SEC filings, and press releases, the total sales from each company's wall decor business in the Canadian market was not well-elaborated. Information was generalized to North America or the US & Canada, with nothing specific to Canada.

We have assumed that the reason why information on the Canadian wall decor segment of the home decor market is not publicly available is that almost all information is locked behind paywalled sources. Also, most reports are focused on the global market or US market.

While we did not find information about the market size for the wall decor segment of the home decor market in Canada, we have provided information on the US wall decor industry as a proxy. We have also provided available information gathered from paywalled sources as they offer helpful insights into the wall decor segment of the home decor market.

Canadian Home Decor: Home Fragrance Market Size

In Canada, the size of the market for home fragrance is around CAD 1.054 billion.

    CANADIAN HOME FRAGRANCE MARKET SIZE

    • Given the following statistics, the size of the Canadian home fragrance market in 2018 can be estimated at USD 812.3 million or CAD 1.054 billion.
    • In 2018, the size of the global home fragrance market was USD 6.7 billion.
    • North America's share of the global home fragrance market in 2018 was around 27% for the following reasons:
      • The region's market share in 2017 was around 27%. This percentage represented the combined market share of Canada and the United States.
      • It is unlikely for this percentage to change drastically in just a span of a year.
    • Multiplying USD 6.7 billion, the size of the global home fragrance market in 2018, by 27%, North America's market share, gives USD 1,809 million, the size of the North American home fragrance market.
    • In 2018, the size of the United States home fragrance market was an estimated USD 996.7 million.
    • Subtracting USD 996.7 million, the size of the United States home fragrance market, from USD 1,809 million, the size of the North American home fragrance market, gives USD 812.3 million, the size of the Canadian home fragrance market.
    • Multiplying USD 812.3 million, the size of the Canadian home fragrance market, by 1.297, the average number of Canadian dollars in a United States dollar in 2018, gives CAD 1.054 billion.

    RESEARCH STRATEGY

To check if the size of the Canadian market for home fragrance is readily available in the public domain, we looked for industry reports and news articles covering the topic. The summaries that market research firms release along with their paywalled industry reports typically provide market size information, and news articles sometimes mention this type of information. With this strategy, we learned that while several market research firms, including TechSci Research, Grand View Research, Credence Research, and HTF Market Intelligence, have covered the home fragrance market, their reports are paywalled and most of the statistics they have disclosed are specific to the global market, not the Canadian market. We found as well that the desired market size is not readily available in the public domain. Fortunately, there were enough details in these summaries for us to triangulate the size of the Canadian market.

Grand View Research indicates in its report summary that the size of the global home fragrance market in 2018, inclusive of sprays, diffusers, candles, and other home fragrance products, was USD 6.7 billion. Though we were unable to locate the exact market share of either the Canadian or the North American market, Credence Research has a bar chart in its report summary that enabled us to estimate the market share of the North American region. The height of the bar representing the North American market, relative to the height of the bar representing the global market, suggests that North America's market share in 2017 was around 27%. (Height measurements may vary from one screen to another depending on the screen size and the zoom setting, but since ratios were used, the end results should remain the same.) Due to the lack of more up-to-date data, we assume that the region has more or less the same market share in 2018. It is unlikely for the market share to increase or decrease rapidly in just a span of one year.

    North America's share of the global home fragrance market: (5 mm/18.5 mm) x 100% = 27%

With this estimated market share, we were able to compute the size of the North American home fragrance market. Multiplying USD 6.7 billion by 27%, we found that the North American home fragrance market was worth around USD 1,809 million in 2018.

Size of the North American home fragrance market: USD 6.7 billion x 27% = USD 1,809 million

Canada's share of this market is not readily available, so we turned our attention to the United States market. We figured we could determine the size of the Canadian market by subtracting the size of the United States market from the size of the North American market. The market share of 27% that was previously determined, after all, corresponds to the combined market share of Canada and the United States. Credence Research considered only these two countries in its sizing of the North American market.

To estimate the size of the United States home fragrance market, we referred to Grand View Research's report summary. This summary has a bar chart depicting the historical and projected size of the United States home fragrance market. The height of the bar representing the 2018 market size, relative to the height of the bar representing the 2016 market size, suggests that the size of the United States home fragrance market in 2018 was around USD 996.7 million. Subtracting this amount from USD 1,809 million, we learned that the size of the Canadian home fragrance market in 2018 was around USD 812.3 million. And finally, using the average USD to CAD exchange rate in 2018, we were able to convert this amount to CAD 1.054 billion.

Size of the United States home fragrance market: USD 941.3 million x (18 mm/17 mm) = USD 996.7 million
Size of the Canadian home fragrance market: USD 1,809 million - USD 996.7 million = USD 812.3 million
Conversion from USD to CAD: USD 812.3 million x 1.297 = CAD 1,054 million or CAD 1.054 billion

We reviewed the previously submitted research on the home decor market and found that market research firms do not categorize home fragrance as a segment of the home decor market. Based on this research, only furniture, home textiles, and floor coverings make up the home decor market. The home fragrance market is technically separate from the home decor market.

We utilize Grandview research, TFO Canada reports, and Alliedmarket research for information regarding Canada outdoor living market size. While we were able to locate the 2015 Canada home decor market size, we were unable to locate recent information regarding Canada home decor market size because this has not been made available in the public domain. Information found provided a forecast for the home decor market from 2015 to 2020. Our research team used the available information to triangulate the Canada outdoor living market size.

    ASSUMPTION

Based on publicly available information, our research team assumed that the Canadian share of the global industry for 2015 remains the same in 2019 since the forecast for the global market is from 2015 to 2020, and also, North America holds the largest share in the world.

    CALCULATIONS

In 2015, Canada home decor market = $10 billion
In 2015, global home decor market = $540.54 billion
    Canada market share = (10 / 540.54) x 100% = 1.85%

In 2018, global home decor market = $663.1 billion
Therefore, the 2018 Canada home decor market = global home decor market x Canada market share
    In 2018, Canada home decor market = (0.0185 x $663.1 billion) ≈ $12.267 billion

    OUTDOOR LIVING MARKET SIZE

According to Grandview research reports, in 2018, the outdoor living segment accounted for 7.4% of the total global home decor market.
    In 2018, global outdoor living market size = $663.1 billion x 0.074 = $49.07 billion
Recall that Canada market share = 1.85%
    Canada outdoor living market share = $49.07 billion x 0.0185 = $907.795 million
Converting this value to the Canadian dollar using an XE currency converter = 1.2 billion CAD

Canadian Home Decor: Bedding Market Size

The 2019 market size of the Canadian home bedding market is estimated at C$1.56 billion.

    CANADIAN HOME BEDDING MARKET ANALYSIS

    • The global size of the home bedding market was worth $60.76 billion in 2018, and the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2019 to 2025.
    • The global home bedding market is worth $63,86 billion in 2019. [See calculations below]
    • The 2019 market size of the global home decor market is about $637.2 billion.
    • The 2019 market size of the Canadian home decor market is about C$15.73 billion ($11.79 billion).
    • It is estimated that the size of the Canadian home bedding market is about C$1.560billion in 2019. [See calculations below]

    RESEARCH STRATEGY

After an exhaustive search for credible market research reports such as those from Markets & Market and Grands View Research to identify a readily available report on the Canadian bedding market proved unsuccessful, we resorted to triangulation to estimate related data points.

    TRIANGULATION:

The global size of the home bedding market was worth $60.76 billion in 2018, and the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2019 to 2025.

    If the market grows at a CAGR of 5.1%, the increment from 2018 to 2019 becomes $60,760,000,000 * 0.051 = $3,098,760,000.

    Therefore, the 2019 market would be worth $60,760,000,000 + $3,098,760,000 = $63,858,760,000.

As determined in the previous report, the 2019 size of the global home decor market is about $637.2 billion.

Next, we determined the share of the home bedding market in the general home decor market thus:
    [$63,858,760,000 / $637,200,000,000] * 100 = 10%.

    ASSUMPTION:

We assume that the trends in the global home decor market also apply to the Canadian market. As such, we can say that the share of Canadian home bedding in the broader Canadian home decor market is consistent with the global market. Following this assumption, the Canadian home bedding market will be worth $1.18 billion (i.e., $11.79 billion * 10%). Converting from USD to CAD using the current exchange rate, the market is worth about C$1.56 billion.

YOUR RESEARCH TEAM APPLIED THE FOLLOWING STRATEGY

Initially, we started searching for a precompiled report containing the market size for the bath segment of the home decor market in Canada through market research reports and statistical databases including IBIS World, Markets and Markets, Grand View Research, Allied Market Research, Statista, and others. None of these reports provided a precompiled data for Canada.

Hence, we decided to extend our research criteria and looked for Global or US report hoping to calculate the Canadian market size based on the previous report. So, we looked for the reports containing the global market size for the bath segment of the home decor market. We found various paid reports for global market containing the desired data and a few reports containing the market size of the bath accessories and other bath textiles. We also found one report containing the US market size for home textiles with a graph depicting the product-wise segments of the market including bath textiles but it did not provide any percentage of value for the bath textiles market. In absence of any other direct data we decided to use our assumptions for the graph for the percentage of the bath textiles which was aggregated with a different color in the graph. Later we used this percentage to calculate the current market size of the current US market for home bath textiles. We also assumed that home bath textiles is similar to home decor bath textiles.

During our research and from the research criteria, we have learned that the bath segment of the home decor market consists mainly of the bath textiles (e.g. towels) and bath accessories. So, after getting the market size for the bath textiles market, we later decided to look for the US market size for home decor bath accessories. While looking through various market research reports and Statista, we did not find any report providing a publicly accessible market size for the US market size for home decor bath accessories. However, we found the North America market size for bath accessories.

Next, we decided to use the above value to calculate the home decor bath accessories market size. We found a Grand View Research Report, but the full report was behind paywalls. However, we were able to see the graph depicting the US market size for Bathroom Vanity market include their residential and non-residential usage. From which we calculated the percentage share of bathroom products that have been used for residential. Later, we added both the home decor bath textiles and home decor bath accessories market size to get the total US market size for the bath segment of the home decor market.

Although we tried to get a percentage share of the Canadian home decor market or the bath segment of the home decor through the market research reports as mentioned above and the media article such as a million insights and others, we could not find the desired information. Therefore, we have established that the market size for the bath segment of the home decor market in Canada is not available publicly. However, we were able to triangulate through value for the market size of the bath segment of the home decor market in the US.

    • Therefore, it is estimated that the 2019 market size of the Canadian rugs market is worth about C$376.29 million. [see calculations below]

    Research Strategy

After an exhaustive search for credible market research reports such as those from Markets and Market, Grands View Research (and others) to identify a readily available report on the Canadian rugs market proved unsuccessful, we resorted to triangulation to estimate related data points.

    CALCULATIONS

CANADIAN CARPET AND RUG MARKET SIZE
Our research found that the 2016 size of the global carpet and rugs market was $88.24 billion. It was projected to rise at a CAGR of 4.2% to hit $112.69 billion by 2022. Therefore, using an online CAGR calculator, we determined that the market is worth $99.8 billion in 2019. We assumed that the trends in the global home decor market also applied to the Canadian market.

If the global size of the home decor market is about $637.2 billion and the carpet and rugs segment is worth $99.8 billion in 2019, this means that the carpet and rugs segment contributes about 15.66% to the global home decor market. Applying this percentage to the Canadian market, we estimate that the 2019 Canadian carpet and rugs market is worth $1.77 billion.

    Contribution carpet & rugs segment to global home decor market= [99.8 billion/637.2 billion]*100% = 15.66%
Market size Canadian carpet and rug segment = $11.79 billion*15.66% =$1.77 billion

    CANADIAN RUG-ONLY MARKET SIZE
The 2019 global carpet and rugs market is worth $99.8 billion and the global carpet floor mats market is worth about $83.5 billion. By deducting the size of the carpet-only market from the total carpet and rugs market we find the size of the global rug-only market, which is $16.3 billion in 2019. That said, we can establish that the global rug-only market contributes 16.33% of the global carpet and rugs market. Applying this percentage to the Canadian market, we estimate that the 2019 Canadian rugs-only market is worth $283.2 million.

    Market size rug-only market = $99.8 billion - $83.5 billion = $16.3 billion
    Contribution global rug market = [$16.3 billion/$99.8 billion] x 100% = 16.33%
    Market size Canadian rugs market = $1.77 billion x 0.1633 = $283.2 million.
Converting to from USD to CAD using the current exchange rate, the market is worth about C$376.29 million.
