Unfortunately there are no professional male athletes that meet the requested criteria. This is to be expected, as few professionals have the time to maintain an active social media account unless the club media department does it for them.

Canadian Athletes: Females and Amateurs

Canadian female athletes have a huge social media following nowadays and thus impact the lives of girls who wants to pursue sports in the future. Some athletes like Christine Sinclaire have actively spoken about various current issues and started their own organizations for sports empowerment among youths. Five of such female athletes have been found. These women do not only have followers on social media, they have given back to the community through their off the field work. All the details have been entered in the attached spreadsheet. 

Adriana Leon

  • Part of Canada's National Soccer Team.
  • Along with some other members of the team, she has joined Common Goal, a social impact movement which lets players pledge 1% of their earnings to charitable causes.
  • More than 65,000 followers on Instagram.

Hayley Wickenheiser

  • Member of Canada's National Hockey Team.
  • Actively involved with various charitable movements like JumpStart, Plan International Because I am a Girl, KidSport, Right To Play, Clean Air Champions, and Spread The Net.
  • 69,000 followers on Twitter.

Diana Matheson

  • Member of Canada's National Soccer Team.
  • Founding member of iS4, an organization founded by four of Canada Soccer's longest serving members which, along with Diana, include Christine Sinclair, Karina LeBlanc and Rhian Wilkinson.
  • More than 53,000 followers on Twitter.

Kaylyn Kyle

  • Member of Canada's National Soccer Team.
  • Right to Play ambassador.
  • Highly active on Twitter with more than 30 tweets a month and a following of 52,000.

Christine Sinclair

  • Captain of Canada's National Soccer Team.
  • Started iS4, an organization which started with soccer camps and grew into a company for workshops, speaking engagements and team building.
  • More than 99,000 followers on Twitter.

Research Strategy

The research team strategically looked for sports articles stating the best female athletes in Canada for the latest year and then filtered out soccer, hockey and basketball players among them. This helped in finding out the famous players, who in turn have more social media following. This gave us a few names but it was tricky finding out whether they were associated with any community or charitable work in Canada.

Another method we used was to find out the famous sports charities in Canada and look for their ambassadors. Then these athletes were cross-referenced with our earlier list of athletes and a final list was created. We double-checked this list for other requirements like good social media presence and interaction with followers.

The final list of athletes have a strong social media following and are actively involved in their communities, thus, they can be good representatives of the brand.
