Top Global Cities for Business Travel

Four of the top fifteen most-visited cities in the world for business travelers are in the United States (New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston). Two of the top fifteen most-visited cities in the world for business travelers are in Europe (London and Paris). Below is an explanation of how we determined these cities to be the top 20 most-visited cities for business travelers globally, followed by the list of those top 20 cities.

METHODOLOGY:

We determined the top 20 most-visited cities for business travelers globally by using this data research report published by industry source Egencia, which is Expedia's corporate travel company. The report, which was published in December 2018, was based on "data [that] capture[d] flight booking and reservation trends from small, mid-cap and multinational companies in more than 60 countries between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2018." Thus, this report is comprehensive, global, and based on nearly five years of corporate travel data, making it an exceptionally credible source. Accordingly, the cities listed below are the most-visited ones for business purposes, as determined by the number of business flights and business reservations made.

World's Busiest Airports

In this study, we found that the busiest airports in the world were determined by Airports Council International (ACI), and selected based on the total number of passengers every. The 20 airports selected contain 64,494,613 passengers in Denver International Airport (DEN) to 107,394,029 passengers in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Below is a detailed explanation of our methodology and findings.

METHODOLOGY

We initially started the research by searching for the official top list of the busiest airports in the world. Our sources included international airport-related websites such as International Airport Review, Dubai Airports, Beijing Airport, Heathrow, Schiphol, and many more. From these sources, we found a total of three lists [two from International Airport Review and the last one from the official website of Airports Council International (ACI)] and verified these lists by searching for online annual reports of the airports from Statista, Globe Newswire, SHINE, and many more. The statistical data that we used in ranking the airports were from 2018. In some cases like Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) or Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), we could not find publicly available annual reports, but the information provided by ACI was sufficient to prove that the airports belong to the 20 busiest airports in the world.
