Key Takeaways
- The University of Maryland College Park had the most Black computer science graduates (54) in the 2019/2020 academic session.
- The University of South Carolina Columbia had 26 Black computer science graduates in the 2019/2020 session.
- African Americans constitute 72% of the total enrollment at the University of South Carolina Columbia.
Introduction
University of Maryland College Park, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of South Carolina Columbia, University of Cincinnati Main Campus, New York University, University of Georgia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University in the City of New York, and University of Maryland Baltimore County are 10 of the top and largest PWI (Predominantly White Institution) colleges/universities in the U.S. that focus on Black software engineering candidates. Details on these institutions have been provided in the attached spreadsheet.
Selected Findings
- Based on 2019/2020 academic graduation statistics, the University of Maryland College Park had the most Black computer science graduates (54) in the U.S.
- In the same year, the University of South Carolina Columbia had 26 Black computer science graduates, with African Americans constituting 72% of the total enrollment at the institution.
- Other top PWIs that focus on Black software engineering in the U.S. are Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of Cincinnati Main Campus, New York University, University of Georgia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University in the City of New York, and University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Research Strategy
To identify 10 of the top PWIs in the U.S. that provide training opportunities or help train black software developers or software engineers and set them up for success in their careers and/or secure recruitment opportunities, we identified a list of all institutions in the U.S. that offer computer science as published by USNews. From this list, we determined the number of Black students that graduated from each school based on the most recently available data provided by College Factual. We selected the top 10 schools with the most Black computer science graduates from this list. Finally, to ensure that we provide only PWIs, we confirmed that each of the selected institutions has Whites as the largest ethnic group in the school. Institutions such as Florida International University were not included in the list despite having 41 Black computer science graduates in 2019/2020. This is because the institution can not be classified as a PWI since Whites make up 10.2% of total enrollment, whereas Blacks contribute 12.5% of total enrollment.
