Who are the biggest users are of Squarespace and its competitors? How are they using it?
Hello there! Thank you for your question on Squarespace's biggest users and how they are using it. The short answer is Americans with a college degree, that wish to design a website that does not need fancy features. Below you will find a deep dive of my research findings and how I came to this conclusion. I hope this helps you!
METHODOLOGY
In my research, I first determined the demographics of Squarespace users. I then determined who Squarespace's chief competitors were and how consumers use both Squarespace and web builder products. In order to keep this in scope of a Wonder request, I focused on the users demographics of Squarespace. I would be more then happy to do an analysis of any of Squarespace's competitors demographics in a future request, although I would imagine the results to be quite similar. I hope that this helps you. My results are as follows:
SQUARESPACE USER DEMOGRAPHICS
In my research I determined that Squarespace.com reaches over 7.4 million inquiries each month in the United States alone. 50.2% of visitors to the site are from the United States, followed by 6.3% from the united Kingdom, 4.1% from India, 3.8% from Canada and 2.8% from Japan. The average visitor spends 4 minutes and 12 seconds on the website, with a total of 3.24 views daily. The bounce rate is 55.30%. I found a great report available form Alexa that I have attached on regards to Squarespace demographics that can be accessed for a fee of $9.99. Data that was not backed behind a paywall, on the Alexa site, stated that slightly more females than males use Squarespace, most browsed the site from their work locations and most had bachelor degrees.
Squarespace is ideal and frequently used by designers, portfolios, photographers, bloggers, restaurants, musicians and for special occasions (especially weddings). It is used by consumers that want to be able to build a professional looking site, without having to learn coding. It is not for those who need to keep a history of website changes, those that operate internationally or those that need file management available on their webpage.
KEY COMPETITORS
The website builder market continues to grow with hundreds of different companies available to help consumers "make a beautiful website in a breeze." Some competitors include Wordpress, Bigcommerce, Shopify, Wix, Moonfruit, Jimdo and Pixpa. They are all targeted at consumers that want to be able to make great looking websites easily. Web builders such as these, allow users to avoid loading packages such as Dreamweaver or similar and creating lines of CSS and HTML " that are necessary to construct a site. It is used by consumers who wish to " pick a template, add some text and images and hit the go button." These products are used by non-website designers or small businesses that do not wish to hire one.
Website builders such as Squarespace are commonly used when the person or businesses' need are simple. They are commonly used by catalog websites or restaurant websites because they do not need "a lot of fancy features- just a gallery, place to include text and other simple features." Heavy-features websites such as online stores or membership sites tend to hire professional web developers. Website builders are also ideal for personal web pages. I have attached you three links to different business that use Squarespace such as Lyft, Tudor and Air Walk. The first website includes popular clients, the second includes "30 Gorgeous Websites" that use Squarespace as a CSM and the third includes 35 different examples of webpages.
