The Average Age of a CMO and a CFO

In the US, the average age of a CMO is 52 years old while that of a CFO is 53 years old. Details on how this average age varies by industry have been outlined below.

CFO

  • A study by the Korn Ferry Institute revealed that the average age of a C-level executive in the US is 54 with the average tenure being 5.3 years.
  • Currently, the average age of a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 chief financial officer (CFO) in the US is 48 at the time of hire. Over five years ago, the average age of a CFO was 42 years old.
  • One reason the average age of a CFO has increased is due to the fact that CFOs in the US now have more responsibilities than they did over five years ago. Thus, companies in the US are actively "seeking out more experienced leaders."
  • In the US, the average age of CFOs in general is 53 years old.
  • In the US financial services and life sciences industries, the average age of a CFO is 54 years old while in other industries, it is 53 years old.
  • The average tenure of a CFO in the US is 5.1 years. CFOs in the life sciences industry have the longest tenure at 6 years while those in the industrial and technology industries have the shortest tenure — 4.9 years.

CMO

  • The average age of a CMO (Chief marketing officer) in the US is 52 years old.
  • In the professional services and life sciences industries, the average age of a CMO is 54 years old. These CMOs have the oldest average age.
  • CMOs in the consumer industry have the youngest average age at 50.
  • CMOs in the US have an average tenure of 4.1 years — the lowest tenure compared to other C-level executive titles.
  • In the US financial services industry, CMOs have the longest tenure at 5.1 years.
  • CMOs in the US life sciences industry have the shortest tenure at 3.1 years while those in the consumer industry have an average tenure of 3.6 years.
  • CMO roles today are "exceptionally complex and require the right balance of left as well as right brain skills, and very importantly, a differentiated set of leadership competencies."

The Average Age of A CTO

The average age of a CTO in the United States is 53.5 years.

Chief Technology Officer — The United States

  • In 2017, the average age of graduates in the workforce with a computer science bachelor's degree in the U.S. (i.e. Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services) is 40.5 years.
  • The holders of these degrees are mostly males and the majority (12,901) of them are white students.
  • The workforce has mostly 34 and 35-year-olds with this major.
  • Attaining a bachelor's degree in computer science takes four years.
  • Many graduate students work before entering the master's program in computer science. The average age of those students is 29 years.
  • Many Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) attain higher-level education, master's degree being one of them.
  • It also takes 24 years to become a CTO.
  • It was found that many students don't enter universities or colleges right after high school and those who do graduate with a bachelor's degree in computer science fall within the age range of 25 - 34 years.

YOUR RESEARCH TEAM APPLIED THE FOLLOWING STRATEGY:

We tried to find precompiled information about the average age of a CTO in the United States. However, we couldn't locate it. Therefore, we decided to triangulate the data by using the average age of graduates with a computer science bachelor degree in the US.

We consulted university sources, including stories about students to find the required data. We checked sources such as Standford Graduate School of Education Stories and Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies. However, these sources did not unearth any substantial data. However, we did find that many CTOs have a master's degree as their qualification.

Subsequently, we examined the U.S. Labor Statistics with the anticipation to identify at what age employees enter the workforce with a computer science degree but this wasn't successful. Instead of finding at what age employees enter the workforce with a computer science degree, we found that "more than half of network and computer systems administrators aged 25 and older from 2015 to 16 had attained education other than a bachelor’s degree".

As our last resort, we expanded the scope and searched for the average age of graduates with a bachelor's degree in the U.S and we found that 78.8% of people between 25 and 34 years hold a bachelor's degree and some of them also have STEM jobs. We also found that the average age of graduate students with a master's degree in computer science is 29.

Triangulation

Since we were able to find that 25 - 34 years is the age range of people who are likely to have the required qualification, we calculated the average age using this information and used this as a proxy for the average age of graduates with a computer science bachelor's degree in the U.S.
Average age = (25 + 34) /2 = 29.5 years

We had already found that it takes 24 years to gain the position of CTO in the US.

Calculation: Average Age + Number of years to become a CTO
29.5 + 24 = 53.5 years.
