What is the average age of Allied Healthcare Professionals in the US with 5 years experience?

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the average age of Allied Healthcare Professionals in the United States with five years of experience. The short answer is that the average employee with five years of experience in the field is 27 years old. You will see a deep dive of my findings below.

OVERVIEW
Throughout the United States, there are more than five million Allied Healthcare Professionals. Allied Healthcare Professionals represent approximately 60 percent of the total number of healthcare workers in the country, and that number is expected to grow from 15.6 million in 2010, to 19.8 million in 2020.

Ultimately, Allied Healthcare Professionals fall into two categories: technicians/assistants, and therapists/technologists. These categories are broad, and encompass a variety of specific job titles, such as cardiovascular technician, ophthalmic medical technician, and medical assistant for the former, and physical therapist, dental hygienist, radiographer, physician's assistant, and audiologist for the latter.

CALCULATIONS
In order to best respond to your request, my colleagues and I researched the age at which the above-referenced employee types complete their education and enter the workforce. We then calculated how old those employees would be five years into their careers. Finally, we calculated the average of each of those ages by adding each age together, and dividing by the total number of ages considered, in order to determine the average age of an Allied Healthcare Professional after five years on the job. These calculations provided us with an average age of 27 for all Allied Healthcare Professionals with five years of experience in the United States.

In order to determine which specific job titles were evaluated for this report, we focused on identifying in-demand positions within the industry. Those careers are medical assistant, respiratory therapist, physical therapist, medical lab technician, exercise physiologist, dental hygienist, MRI technologist, dietician, radiation therapist, and veterinary technologist.

RESPONSE
Each of the above-named careers has different educational requirements. That said, the majority require only an associate's or a bachelor's degree. Because of these requirements, the average employee is between 19 and 30 years old when they first complete their education and begin working, and between 24 and 33 five years into their careers.

Specifically, medical assistants are approximately 19 at graduation, respiratory therapists are 21, physical therapists are 25, medical lab technicians, exercise physiologists, dietitians, radiation therapists, veterinary technologists, and dental hygienists are 23, and MRI technologists are 20. Based on these ages, the above-mentioned employees are approximately 24, 26, 30, 28, and 25 respectively after they've been working for five years.

Using the calculations outlined in the previous section, I added each of these ages together, and divided by the total of 10 ages. This gave me the average age of approximately 27 years old for all Allied Healthcare Professionals with five years of experience in the United States.

Ultimately, the ages provided above are only an estimate as many employees don't begin training immediately after high-school, or delay the start of their careers for varying amount of times after completing their degrees and training. Further, not all employees are 18 years old, the year assumed in this report, at the time that they complete their high-school education. Despite extensive research, specific data on the ages of employees in this field with five years of experience is not readily available. For that reason, my colleagues and I estimated these numbers based on the available data regarding in-demand careers within the industry, education levels, and the average ages of individuals at those levels of education.

SUMMARY
To summarize, the average age of an Allied Healthcare Professional working in the United States with five years of experience is 27 years old. This estimate is based on the ages of professionals working in 10 specific careers within this industry.
