The average hourly fee of law firms in the United States is found to be $240, while the average hourly rate of lawyers in the United States is $260. According to the 2017 Legal Trends Report, New York City takes the top spot among the country’s metropolitan areas that charge the highest hourly attorney rate of $344, followed by Los Angeles with an average rate of $323, and Chicago with an average rate of $312.
After an extensive search through government databases, industry reports, press releases, and other trusted media sites, we were able to gather information on the average hourly rates of attorneys by state, by city, and by practice area. The Attorney Fee Survey report of 2015-2016 and the 2017 Legal Trends Report are the primary reports referenced for this research since the methodologies used by these reports have been attested by the National Association of Legal Fee Analysis (NALFA). For further reference, we include the link to the “Attorney Hourly Rate Report 2018”, which is the most recent and in-depth paid-report available on the various law firms (large, medium, and small-sized) in the world.

Average Attorney Hourly Rates by State

According to the Attorney Fee Survey report (2015-2016), the state of Delaware takes the top spot with an average hourly rate charged by attorneys of $613. Rhode Island ($500), New Jersey ($497), California ($465), and Nevada ($457) follow Delaware in the list of the top five states with the highest average hourly attorney rates in the nation. The following are the top ten states with the highest average hourly attorney rates in the United States:

According to the 2017 Legal Trends Report, the following are the highest average hourly rates of attorneys for the largest metropolitan regions of the country —

The report also provides a breakdown of the national average hourly rates charged by attorneys by practice area, with immigration taking the highest spot with $340, followed by intellectual property ($318), tax ($304), real estate ($304), trusts ($301), insurance ($186), mediation and arbitration ($162), workers’ compensation ($150), medical malpractice ($149), and juvenile ($86).
