How much did AT&T (ticker T) spend on wireless/network CapEx every year from 2008-2016?
Hi! Thanks for your question about AT&T's wireless CapEx between 2008 and 2016. I was able to find estimates for every year from 2009 to 2016 thanks to industry sources like Above Ground Level and Credit Suisse, and I've given an estimate of their 2008 wireless CapEx based on these figures. Read on for a brief explanation and link to my findings!
OVERVIEW
While AT&T doesn't provide CapEx figures by segment, several sources have given estimates of their wireless CapEx spending over the years. Credit Suisse gave estimates for 2009-2011, and Above Ground Level has estimated AT&T's wireless CapEx for every year since 2012.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find an estimate for AT&T's 2008 wireless CapEx. I've calculated my own estimate, though, based on the percentage of total CapEx that went to wireless and network technology for the 2009 and 2010. In 2009, wireless spending was 35% of total CapEx ($6.1b of $17.2b), and in 2010 that rose to 45% ($9.2b of $20.3b). If that percentage range held true for 2008, AT&T's wireless CapEx for that year was likely somewhere between $7.1 billion and $9.2 billion: 35 to 45 percent of a total $20.3 billion CapEx.
CONCLUSION
I was able to find industry estimates (or triangulate when necessary) for AT&T's wireless/network CapEx from 2008 to 2016. My findings and sources are available in your spreadsheet.
