How many AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) production studios are there in the US?
There are approximately 233 augmented and virtual reality production studios in the United States. This includes 113 that are located in California and 41 in New York, the two most popular states for AR and VR studios. I have compiled the list of studios on the attached spreadsheet, along with the website and location of each one.
Methodology
To determine the number of AR and VR studios in the United States, I first searched for a pre-compiled list. Fortunately, I found the Virtual Reality Marketing site, which lists all known VR and AR studios in each country where they exist. For the United States, this website listed 195 studios; however, it did not list the multiple locations some companies have. Therefore, I had to visit each company's website to identify those which have multiple locations in the United States. I also found that several companies have gone out of business and two were not actually located in the United States.
Please note that the total of 233 studios is likely only an estimate, as some companies do not list all their locations on their website. However, I do believe the spreadsheet represents a comprehensive listing of all VR and AR production studios in the United States. There just may be some satellite studios missing due to a lack of information on come company websites.
Conclusion
Based on all information available on existing VR and AR studios in the United States, there are approximately 233 studios in the country. The majority of these studios are located in Los Angeles, California (58), with New York, New York a close second (34).
