How many AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) production studios are there, globally?
During this research we were able to identify 872 studios of 676 AR/VR production companies throughout the world. Of these companies, 200 companies have around 233 studios in US, and 476 companies have 539 studios in the rest of the world. Exact number of all studios can not be found as not all studios choose to be listed publicly, therefore we provided the closest possible approximation.
METHODOLOGY
We were able to identify three websites that list VR companies from around the world:
1. Virtual Reality Marketing is a website where companies can list their own VR studio free of charge. This website provides a list of 200 companies that hold 233 studios in the US. On top of that, it also lists studios from other countries in the world, which is all appropriately linked in the attached spreadsheet.
2. VRMeister is a website that provides a compiled list of AR/VR Studios in multiple countries. This source contains 46 AR/VR production companies, with total of 52 studios.
3. VRCompanies is a database of VR companies. This source provides additional 43 AR/VR production companies with 48 studios.
4. For Japan, we were able to identify two additional studios — Hashilus and Yomuneco (Enigma Sphere). Each have one studio in Japan.
We employed the following criteria:
1. Companies were then counted from lists provided as sources, selected by criteria specific to this question (VR/AR studios). Many companies do not provide information about number of studios they have, so number of different locations provided by company was used as number of that company's studios (assuming they actually have studio on all given locations).
2. Companies that appear in more than one list are only counted once. 3. Many companies that have studios in US also have studios in some other countries, so the total number of different companies is not equal to the sum of those two (it is non-disjoint union).
FINDINGS
A list of AR/VR companies that advertise online can be found in the attached spreadsheet. The list contains 772 studios of 676 AR/VR production companies throughout the world. Of these companies, about 200 companies have around 233 studios in US, and 476 companies have 539 studios in the rest of the world.
After the US, the next country with the largest number of AR/VR production companies is United Kingdom with 92 companies that own a total of 98 studios. In third place is Canada with 35 companies that own 37 studios. Several other countries have between 10 and 30 AR/VR companies: Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden. As each of these countries appears on more than one list, all appropriate sources can be found in the spreadsheet.
Important to note is that while this list and the provided data show many AR/VR production companies globally, we cannot be certain that it shows the overall number of AR/VR production companies, as the sources we cited don't include a lot of countries which might have smaller AR/VR production studios that don't necessarily advertise for the global market. On top of that, the countries listed might have additional companies that weren't listed in the sources, and therefore not included in our list.
CONCLUSION
A list of AR/VR companies has been compiled in the attached spreadsheet. The list consists of 727 studios of 676 AR/VR production companies throughout the world. These companies were all included in the lists we provided as sources, and this list should be taken as an approximation, and not the exact number. Of these companies, 200 have 233 studios in US. After the US, the next country with the largest number of AR/VR production companies is United Kingdom with 92 companies that own a total of 98 studios. In third place is Canada with 35 companies that own 37 studios.
