Annual revenues from 1967 to 2015 for Organic and Natural Foods.

The attached spreadsheet contains the U.S annual sales revenue of organic and natural foods from 1980 to 2016.

OVERVIEW

The U.S Organic and Natural food movement began in the early 70s. While there was no data publicly available for sales revenue for the organic and natural food industry in the 1970s and 1980s, there were, however, reports of significant growth and popularity of the industry between the 70s and 80s.

A historical timeline of organic food products in the U.S reveals that in the 1970s, the "California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)" which was formed by a group of farmers became the first organization to certify organic farms.

Organic food sales revenue was first reported in 1990 with an estimated sales revenue of $1 billion. Sales continued to grow at an average rate of 20% annually. Actual revenue figures were also found between 1994 to 2016.

On the attached spreadsheet, the sales revenue from 1980 to 2016 has been compiled. Revenue sales between 1980 and 1989 have been extrapolated by assuming an annual growth rate of 20% based on the revenue trend experienced between the year 1994 to 2008. The formula used in calculating the previous year was [present year]/1 + 20%]. For example, to obtain 1989 sales revenue figure, the 1990 sales revenue was used.

1.0/1+20% = 1.0/1.2 = $0.83 billion (estimate for 1989)

1988 figure would be:

0.83/1+20% = 0.83/1.2 = $0.69 billion (estimate for 1988)

The annual sales revenue for organic and natural foods has been increasing over the years. However, the organic food sales growth dropped significantly in 2009 to 5.1% from 15.7% in 2008. As at 2015, the growth rate was 11%.
