Competitors

  • 1. EBay.com.au — eBay Australia is the most visited online marketplace in the country, with 76.41 million visits, 9 minutes and 27 seconds average visit duration, and 9.27 pages per visit.
  • 2. Catch.com.au — With a catalog comprising around 1.2 million products from more than 1,000 domestic and international sellers, this online marketplace has 5.89 million visits, 6 minutes and 29 seconds average visit duration, and 9.34 pages per visit.
  • For comparison, Amazon.com.au has 16.34 million visits, 7 minutes and 50 seconds average visit duration, and 7.50 pages per visit.

Research Strategy:

To determine the number of Amazon Prime products in Australia, we looked first for a direct answer on sources, such as the company’s news announcements, media, and blog articles. Since the entrance of Amazon to the Australian ecommerce market as well as the launch of Amazon Prime in Australia were substantially covered by the media, we expected that the needed information could be readily available. Although we did not find the exact data that we needed, we came across some valuable data, including the total number of products sold on Amazon.com.au and a rough estimate of the Prime-eligible products on Amazon.com.au.

Since we know the total number of products sold on Amazon.com.au, we tried to look for the percentage of Prime-eligible products out of the Amazon Australia’s catalog. By finding this data, we could proceed to triangulation and come up with the needed value. However, this proved to be fruitless, too, since the percentage of Prime-eligible products are not found through further readings on media and blog articles.

Despite an overall lack of data on this topic, we were able to successfully triangulate an answer by looking at each of Amazon Australia's product categories one-by-one and using the Prime filter to isolate the prime products only. From there, each page gave a general figure as to how many products are available for Prime under that category. From here, we added up the figures for each category in this attached spreadsheet to arrive at a grand total. Therefore, the total number of Amazon Prime products in Australia is approximately 1,588,327.

To determine the competitors of Amazon in Australia, we determined the biggest players in online marketplace in the country. Among these companies, we have chosen eBay.com.au and Catch.com.au since they are regarded, together with Amazon.com.au, as the top 3 Australian marketplaces based on web traffic.
