Research Strategy

Initially, we tried to garner data on the exact passenger figures for Virgin Australia, Virgin Holidays, Virgin Atlantic, and one airport in each of the major Californian counties of LA, San Francisco, and San Diego from the Bureau of Transportation statistics. We were able to locate statistics on Virgin Australia to and from LAX and passenger figures for one airport in each of the major Californian counties of LA, San Francisco, and San Diego by using the filters in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics database. Please note that there are no Virgin Atlantic airline services to San Diego Airport.

We were also able to obtain the airport passenger statistics for Orlando, Miami, and Las Vegas and filtered these statistics specifically for Virgin Atlantic Airways. Through this exercise, we discovered that Virgin Atlantic Airways only uses Miami International Airport in Miami, but does not serve other airports in Miami such as Fort Lauderdale Airport as there are no passenger records when filtered specifically for Virgin Atlantic. Similarly, we concluded that Virgin Atlantic Airways only uses Orlando International Airport in Orlando and Las Vegas McCarran airport in Las Vegas. Therefore, the passenger statistics of Miami International Airport, Orlando International Airport, and Las Vegas McCarran Airport were triangulated as passenger statistics of Virgin Atlantic to and from Orlando, Miami, and Las Vegas in 2018.

Information on passenger figures for Virgin Holidays between the U.K. and Florida in 2018 are not available in the public domain and there are no or limited statistics to triangulate the figure. This was determined after applying the strategies below.

To locate passenger figures for Virgin Holidays between the U.K. and Florida in 2018, we tried various filters in the database of the Bureau of Transport Statistics and those of other aviation authorities like the U.S. Department of Transport, the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority but most of the information is on the number of passengers uplifted by Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd in the United Kingdom (U.K.) in 2018 and not specific to flights between the U.K. and Florida.

Next, we took a different approach and searched for passengers figures for flights between the U.K. and Florida in the publications and annual reports of Virgin Holidays (operating as Virgin Atlantic) but could not locate any as most of the information was specific to revenue generation.

As a last resort, we searched for trends in passengers figures between the U.K. and Florida in various airlines articles, case studies and statistics reports on websites such as Statista, Travel Math, Travel Weekly, Travel Tips, Open Flights, and others. Our motive was to triangulate the trend statistics specific to Virgin Atlantic airways but most of the information found was on arrival and departure times and the number of passengers uplifted by Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd in the United Kingdom (U.K.) in 2018 and not relevant to the request.
