There are 7M blind adults in US. What % of them have a household income above $50K, $100K and $200K?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the household income of blind adults in the US. The short version is that the percentage of blind adults with a household income level $50,000 to $100,000 is 42.4 percent and with a household income level above $100,000 is 26.2 percent. Even after extensive research, the data regarding the percentage of blind adults with a household income level above $200,000 was not available. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
According to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the total number of blind adults in the US in 2014 was 7,358,400. The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) published statistics from the American Community Survey 2015 and the National Health Interview Survey. According to these surveys, the total number of blind adults (above the age of 18) in the US in 2015 was 6,969,227.
The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) has published data regarding the annual household incomes of adults with vision loss. The data for vision loss includes data for both visually impaired individuals and individuals suffering from blindness. According to the published data:
* The number of adults with vision loss who have an annual household income of $50,000 to $75,000 is 3.1 million.
* The number of adults with vision loss who have an annual household income of $75,000 to $100,000 is 1.6 million.
* The number of adults with vision loss who have an annual household income of more than $100,000 is 2.9 million.
A study published in the Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research found that, out of all the individuals suffering from vision loss, 66.48 percent suffer from blindness and 33.52 percent are visually impaired.
CALCULATIONS
Total number of adults suffering from blindness in 2014
Percentage of individuals suffering from blindness with respect to individuals suffering from vision loss = 66.48 percent
Total number of adults with vision loss with income level $50,000 to $100,000
= Adults with income level $50,000 to $75,000 + Adults with income level $75,000 to $100,000
= 4.7 million
Percentage of adults suffering from blindness with income level $50,000 to $100,000
= (Adults with vision loss with income level $50,000 to $100,000 * Percentage of adults suffering from blindness) / Total adults suffering from blindness
= 42.4 percent
Total number of adults with vision loss with income level above $100,000
Percentage of adults suffering from blindness with income level above $100,000
= (Adults with vision loss with income level above $100,000 * Percentage of adults suffering from blindness) / Total adults suffering from blindness
= 26.2 percent
SUMMARY
* The percentage of adults suffering from blindness in the US with a household income level $50,000 to $100,000 is 42.4 percent.
* The percentage of adults suffering from blindness in the US with a household income level above $100,000 is 26.2 percent.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, the percentage of blind adults with a household income level $50,000 to $100,000 is 42.4 percent and with a household income level above $100,000 is 26.2 percent.
