Who are the 5 leading competitors in the U.S. for intrinsically safe mobile devices (e.g. Class 1 Div 2, ATEX Zone 2 devices such as BarTec) and what is the market share (by revenue) of each?

Hello! Thank you for your question about the top competitors in the intrinsically safe mobile devices market. The short version is the leading competitors in the market are Ecom Instruments, Sonim, Intermec, Bartec Pixavi, and Airacom. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.

METHODOLOGY

I found the most manufacturers of intrinsically safe mobile devices that I could, and looked at the revenue each company had. Using market values of the companies and their relevance in the industry, I determined the top 5 from the revenues I found. Then I listed them with their platform, industry, and operating systems that they use. The 5 I will discuss are Intermec, Ecom Instruments, Bartec Pixavi, Airacom, and Sonim. Most of the companies are privately traded, and so the numbers are estimated. These companies have multiple intrinsically safe devices, and are using cutting-edge technology to create useful mobile devices for hazardous conditions. I felt even though there was no way of finding a revenue for Sonim it was a strong competitor in the market because of the exclusivity to rugged mobile devices, and its high-grade devices, but I listed it last because of the lack of revenue information.

COMPETITORS

INTERMEC: This is a publicly traded company which is a subsidiary of Honeywell, and the revenue listed is $801 Million. They state "only Intermec provides a complete range of integrated devices for both hazardous and non-hazardous environments. Non-Incendive and Intrinsically Safe mobile computers from Intermec offer seamless integration with your operations and other systems, while reducing your training and support costs." Providing the mobile computers that are intrinsically safe seems to be only half of their business model. They only offer a small selection of handheld computers, but appear to offer two types of each mobile device, one that is intrinsically safe and one that is not. Their devices are outfitted with Microsoft Windows operating systems.

ECOM INSTRUMENTS: Also privately traded, Ecom Instruments is estimated with a $12 Million revenue. Ecom Instruments is a world market leader for mobile industrial devices, and was one of the first to develop 4G cellphones for hazardous work areas. While most of their devices are Android, they recently released a Windows Tablet PC. Their main platform is in headsets, but they have 4 smartphone devices that range in classifications.

BARTEC PIXAVI: Although a privately traded company the estimated revenue is $4.4 Million. They offer a range of computers and smartphones. The main operating system found in their devices is Android, but their Agile X tablet PC has Windows 8.1. They take full advantage of the fact that "BARTEC PIXAVI is the only IECEx and ATEX certified smartphone vendor which have complete control over the entire production process," and are able to customize their devices, and remove cameras or other aspects.

AIRACOM: Another smaller privately traded company, Airacom has an estimated revenue of $4.4 Million. They offer both Android and Windows 10 tablets, and a wide selection of ATEX Zone 1/21 mobile devices, all of which are Android. They state their purpose as "Airacom RTLS provides the ability to accurately know exactly where people, assets and equipment are located in real-time,  providing granular business intelligence, increase operational efficiency and gain a much greater return on investment by better managing your operations."

SONIM: This is another privately traded company, and I could not find an estimated revenue, however they do have $10 Million funding listed. They feature 6 different LTE Android devices, and function mostly with Android OS. With competitive devices it's interesting to see that "Sonim phones are backed by a three-year comprehensive warranty, covering not only manufacturing defects, but even accidental damage."

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Ecom Instruments, Sonim, Intermec, Airacom, and Bartec Pixavi are all leading competitors in the intrinsically safe mobile device market. While they all provide certified devices, they each offer their own priorities and specialized devices.
